Popular Post Lewya 360
Conductor John Mauceri shared the music and people that inspire him in a recent article in The Guardian -What is the best new piece written in last half-century?Hamilton. It’s brand new and a game changer. It stands equal to what Gershwin did with ragtime and jazz, making it viable for long-form orchestral works and opera, and what Bernstein later did with pop music in the 1940s and especially in 1957 with West Side Story. Now the music of today’s streets, AKA hip-hop, has been transformed by Lin-Manuel Miranda to tell a great and moving story, and it is simply thrilling. But the work from the past 50 years that I return to with ever increasing admiration and affection is John Williams’s score to AI from 2001. If the soundtrack album could be reconstructed into a single orchestral work and called something like “A Symphony of Stored Memories”, it would be programmed by orchestras throughout the world and be a standard addition to the repertory.http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/aug/24/facing-the-music-conductor-john-mauceriEven a link to Incanus A.I. article on JWfan is included! crocodile 7,984
Which reminds me. My mum told me something the other day about some film critics on the Polish radio saying something about A.I. being among the best film scores in (relatively) recent memory and one of John Williams' most haunting works. I don't think they were fans of his as such but this one score was an exception. They were of a more "uptight" circles so these comments were surprising.Karol
nightscape94 965
A.I. has the benefit of not being overexposed in film music concerts or "pops" concerts, but it's unlikely to penetrate the concert hall. I do like the idea of turning it into a symphonic tone poem. I mentioned this in the 3CD thread, but "Stored Memores", "What Is Your Wish?", "The Specialist Visits", and "The Reunion" would make a fantastic 20 minute work. Popular Post nightscape94 965
I'm referring to the "Classical" concert hall. It would make a nice concert piece:Korngold - Violin Concerto in D majorWilliams - "Stored Memories", tone poem for Orchestra (based on A.I. Loert 2,510
Bit of a shameless plug but I recently composed a short sketch based on my first viewing of A.I. on Wednesday. You can listen to it here:https://soundcloud.com/thomas-kobialka/minimalist-sketchHope you enjoy it!Honestly, I'm so happy to have discovered this soundtrack. The final so-called "piano concerto" is just heart-wrenching. Hypothetically you can say Williams pulled up every single sappy idea he could think of and therefore it's not a great piece of music, but Williams always manages to weave his musical ideas in such a way that they're never in your face (well, apart from "suite" section of his Star Wars theme pehaps...) He will linger on an idea for some time but will always add enough variety to make it a pleasurable experience, and just when it's reached its emotional peak, he will move on to another, equally as delightful idea. Particularly in this track, the way he weaves all the different motifs from previously in the film, is genius.Another track that stood out to me was the music which plays during the arrival of the SuperMecha at the Blue Fairy ("Journey through the Ice"). Both versions on the album are incredibly haunting, and go really well with the scene.

Luke Skywalker 1,792
I just came with this old promotional webpage of the film which is funny.I had read back in 2001, that my city was home to the AIT (aragon institute of technology), the institute that had something to do with the AI research among other things. In that time i think it was just a joke about the coindicende of the acronym to one of our universities research centers. And today I have found the original promotional site. In which amazingly its true, my city "will" host since 2021 the most advanced technology universtiy...spanning campus in several parts of the world, including the moon. I can't believe it. How can my citie's name end up in a promotional thing like this is very funny.Dr. Hobby is mentioned there. Here it is: https://web.archive.org/web/20010516011145/http://www.ita-es.ro/Do you know if something about this institute can be seen in the film? Quintus 5,399
Just read the thread for the first time. So did anyone ever put together Mauceri's idea for a “A Symphony of Stored Memories” then? I only ever had the OST for this soundtrack. I'm assuming AI eventually did get a more satisfying chronological release (that Thor can't abide for... reasons)? Gruesome Son of a Bitch 6,488
A.I. got an exhaustive 3 disc release with the entire score. The first act loses steam and meanders for me. Needs some trimming to tighten the listening experience. I liked the Academy bootleg. You could slap together a solid listen with the extra tracks. Absolutely dreadful; as Gruesome says -- it meanders terribly, and there's nothing new and interesting that isn't already well represented on the brilliant OST. For me, it was actually an offense to what I consider the best score of this millennium (and one of the very best films as well). I deleted it quickly and swiftly from my hard drive, and have no intention of ever getting near it again.
