Question on technique that Ennio Morricone uses

Those are two trumpets played by Michele Lacerenza and Francesco Catania, one on Bb or C trumpet and the other on piccolo trumpet. Lots of double tongueing, with each call slightly overlapping the other.

That gunshot-like sound you hear in the studio recording is a 'Rastrophone' (an instrument 'devised' by fellow Italian composer Mario Nascimbene, which he later admitted was none other than a garden rake!) processed through heavy spring reverb.
