Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (Rian Johnson 2017)

Hamill is right to defend his point of view, but the people should care less about divisive reactions, especially with this kind of universe, reworked so many times. The reactions of the public are naturals. There are those who are being presented the franchise now, there are those who have known it with the prequels and veterans of the original trilogy. It's impossible to please everyone. And the new always finds resistance to be accepted because there is much material already made that can serve as a parameter for criticism.

This feels very similar to George Lucas in 2015, when he gave TFA very faint praise (and gave that "white slavers" remark) and then backtracked several weeks later, saying that he loved what Disney was doing with the franchise, in a press release statement.

First look at the film's deleted scenes, which answers a few questions about that mysterious trailer footage of Rey running with her lightsaber on Acht-To:

Awesome! Can't imagine Williams scored this with anything less than Rey's/The Force/Luke's Theme. Plus, what appears to be some weird native celebration thrown in for good measure!

Yup, posted already in one of the other threads :)

I'm really looking forward to the Ahch-To scenes.

I think they should have included more of the Ahch-To scenes in the final cut and rather cut parts of the Canto Bight subplot. Rey's visit to Luke feels underdeveloped as it is now.

Cut parts? That whole subplot should never have even been written, much less filmed and included in the movie.

While I'm excited for this release (especially the commentary track and deleted scenes with new music) the opening statement of Force theme in this video made me nauseous.

I think it was OK until they were caught in the casino. From there it went downhill.

As much as it is a mixed bag for me, I really just want to see it on the small-screen because our percpetion of pace on the small-screen is profoundly different to that  of the theater.

I actually like it.  It's at least a more creative application of the theme than the power-anthemic tv spot renditions.

I think it wasn't working from the very outset. Besides the pacing implications and even the aesthetic of Canto Bight, I think that the themes which Rian Johnson tried to infuse that subplot with (social commentary, morality of arms trades, animal cruelty) stood outsid of the film's overarching themes (demystifying of heroes, depression, loyalty). And because of that, their presentation was rushed and didn't feel organic.

It's interesting that Johnson made Rose more concerned about freeing the abused animals rather than freeing the abused slave children.

The animals were cuter. They had so sad eyes.

Maybe the same plot device as Phantom Menace; slaves have an embedded microchip which detonates if they try to escape.

Presumably they don't bother putting one in the animals, given their lack of sentience.

I am sure the Fathiers enjoyed their new life free on a desert planet, and I am sure they were not simply rounded up again.  Such a brilliant screenplay--no wonder JJ would have loved to have directed it himself.

I've yet to see a single SW film that feels like it makes sense. ;)

I've taken the decision not to buy the BD of TLJ now.

I will wait for a boxset of the new Trilogy... hoping they will fix some major issues (like Chewie not hugging Leia in TFA and the "thing" that looks like Yoda in TLJ).

I say patience.

Really? That's a major issue?

Can't believe this hadn't occurred to me!

It hasn't occured to you, because there probably isn't any authorial intent there.
