Honest to god folks protect yourself. There are literally careers and lives being ruined about what someone posted on the internet. You literally cannot be careful enough.

Cowardice is not the answer here. Fight back. Hold idiots to account.

Maybe the actress is of Chinese origin but that has nothing to do with Rowling.

She's not Chinese, she's Scottish. She ordered a macaroni cheese pie, and an Irn Bru, from the trolley. What more proof do you need?!

I don't see how anyone could read that essay and think "What a transphobic and selfish monster."  I see a person, like me I hope, that always strives to be open-minded, that thinks pluralism and acceptance is a strength, and is earnestly struggling with this particular social movement.  I see a good-faith conversation.  And bravo for that!

I agree. She has concerns, maybe they’re unfounded, I don’t know enough about the subject. But “burn the witch!!” Certainly isn’t the solution you this. (Pardon the pun)

This induced an official statement from freakin' Warner Bros.

https://variety.com/2020/film/news/jk-rowling-warner-bros-1234631061/

It's basically a nonsense corporate PR lawyerly statement that uses words but doesn't say anything.

I read it this way - We are not going to fire her. Some people are too big to fire.

But make no mistake... if some lower level actor had made these same statements, you can bet your ass they would have been fired before the day is over.

This whole cancel culture is getting out of hand.  Minority groups trying to erase and ruin the career of a public persona beloved by millions of people because they felt slightly slighted then react hysterically using social media to destroy people isn't going to get them anywhere with their cause.

This is what they do. Do, do... do, do!

Fine. This morning I've decided I'm no longer disabled. I identify as someone who isn't blind from now on. Gonna buy myself a car and see how it goes. Also might try and wave my arms on the streets because I also identify as someone who can fly. Wish me luck everybody!

I always find the best way to deal with someone who disagrees with you is to abuse them online and do everything you can to ruin their career.

Tit for tat is better than getting steamrolled.

The best answer is to not be employed. Employees can’t capitalize on controversy. You need to be self-employed, then controversy is publicity and you’ll boost your business.

Unless you receive a surprise (but coincidentally timed) letter in mail notifying you that your ABN has been cancelled for no specified reason!

We have our own problems.

Free market is dead. Late-stage capitalism is pretty weird. Very socialist if you are a big corporation. Government owns most of the market as of this year, with the Fed and Treasure printing money to take ownership of everything.

I'm pretty sure WB is gonna cave in a few days and cancel the rest of the Fantastic Beasts film series. Who's gonna be the real winners if that happens? Trans rights activists and the social media woke brigade who'll have the worldwide JKRowlings fans against them now?

Or JK Rowlings  is just gonna say screw all of you, I'm not finishing those movies and retiring for good. Then she won't have to come out and talk about the gender, sexual identity and skin color of the various characters in her movies  and books and why she didn't include this and that.

I' m trying not to be cynical about the movies themselves. Because of JKRowlings we have 3 classic John Williams scores we'll cherish forever

WB have already made a statement and I can’t see them changing their minds. The movie isn’t due out for nearly 18 months so a long time for this to die down.

She lost less than 100,000 twitter followers over this.

This is a fascinating occurence.

It kinda shows the different standards for the wealthy and the powerful.

Rowling can topple businesses and companies if she wants. She has basically that "fuck you" power. I think social media mobs fail against power like that.

Who else this immensely wealthy and powerful has ever tried to take on a social media mob?

So...how did it go?

I hate to say this, but I agree with Rowling 100%.

If we invoke biology, no amount of nip-and-tuck, or pills, or hormone replacement will ever change an XY into an XX, or vice versa. This would require a fundamental rearranging of chromosomes, which, at this point in time, is not possible.

This is not the real point though, is it? I have dealt with children of both sexes who wish to identity as "opposites" (my quotation marks) and have been referred to Tavistock. I'll confess that I lacked the knowledge and skills to be able offer counsel to these confused, sad children, and that's why I worked alongside specialist therapists, to try to get to the root of their issues.

I do know, however, that allowing someone to mutilate your body, just because you feel "uncomfortable" inside it, is not the answer.

By the by, when did it ever become outlawed for someone to have an opinion and display it, in the public arena?

A certain Eric Arthur Blair once said: "Freedom of speech means that I have the right to say things that you might not want to hear".

He should know...

Voluntarily making yourself a slave of modern healthcare is a silly thing. Better to suffer in your soul than be owned by the modern medical supply chain.

The whole "woke" movement lost me in the Washington Post article about JW's music being racist. Nobody cares about film music so it's didn't get much traction but I saw how far it could go with something I deeply care about.

And ripping out and destroying historical monuments and statues isn't doing it for me either

I’ve no problem with statues of slavers and racists being torn down. Put them in a museum if you just buy there’s no need for these men to be publicly celebrated.

Cancel culture needs to end though.
