We lost one of the greats today. Maazel's tenure with the NYP was an immensely integral part of my musical "coming of age", and I was there from his first night in 2002 to the sublime last notes of his Mahler 8 farewell concert in 2009.

He lives on in his recordings.

Maazel was a tremendous force in music and will be missed. I'm happy to have seen him perform recently and he was full of energy and life. And by the way, the final redemption of Faust makes a fitting tribute. RIP.

It's indeed very sad. A real, great master. My first contact with him was via his recording of Romeo and Juliet, by Prokofiev. A masterpiece played to perfection. He has left an incredible amount of fine recordings of classical music.

Indeed. There is no other moment in music, yet, that brings me that near to pure ecstasy. It's a glimpse of the divine. His last night at the NYP leading that piece was the most powerful experience I've ever had inside the concert hall, and one of the most outside of it.

Maazel was musical director of the Vienna State Opera for a few years in the early 80s, though I was too young to listen to opera back then. I don't have many recordings by him - I mostly remember once buying a horrid version of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances he did. I have some Mahler though; my father was a big fan of Maazel's Mahler, I believe.
