I guess it wouldn't hurt for non-initiates, you know, but it does have some of the familiar elements of the genre which aren't new to those who are familiar with them.

What was silly about it? It's definitely more jovial and lighthearted, but I took that as being more charming than silly.

Silly = "jovial and lighthearted" ;)

The De Niro from Ireland, by the director who doesn't like Marvel.

I loved it! Although I usually love Marty's very long epics about gangsters and bandits in general, from Goodfellas and Casino (which are two of my favorite movies of all time) to The Departed and Wolf of Wall Street.

That's a meditation about the finity of life, past sins, the bloody and corrupted american history, man's difficult relationships with families, friends and allies... Might be my favorite movie of the year. I'm just a little sad that it didn't played on theaters here at my town.

Also: I couldn't look at this older Joe Pesci and not be reminded of Ennio Morricone, while Pacino on this movie reminded me of Alan Silvestri... Or Howard Shore? Or the two of them combined? I dunno, when are they going to make Film Composers: The Movie?

As I said, Pacino reminded me of Ciaran Hinds, but yes, Pesci absolutely was Morricone.

Marriage Story (2019):

The film managed to 'surprise' on one point: Adam Driver. I've always been in doubt about his role in Disney Star Wars, but here he surprised me. In fact, I dare say that Adam Driver is the reason why you should see this movie.  And yes, although it is not an outright remake, sometimes Marriage Story is reminiscent of Kramer vs Kramer, but that is probably hard to avoid. About the song "Being Alive": This scene is the other highlight of the film. I did not know this song from adam (pun intended) but immediately recognized that it was from Sondheim. 6,5/10

For a start, he's taller, and he's better looking.

He had the hardest job, in TFA: to make one feel sorry for the bad guy - and he succeeded, admirably.

I want to see this, and THE REPORT.

His UNDERCOVER BOSS is funny as.

@Alexcremers, BEING ALIVE is from COMPANY.

I wonder if Driver ever groped Ridley's boob in a jokey way.

He played a bro dumbass in the HBO series 'Girls' and he did it beautifully (you wouldn't guess from his delicate facial appearance).

He does consistently good work. Even in Star Wars. One of the most interesting actors of his generation

Indeed and the Marriage Story is even better than Kramer vs Kramer.

The Irishman

I liked it but didn't love it.  I didn't think it was too slow; I thought the pacing was fine.  And was surprised but how quickly I got sucked into the story within the opening minutes, quite a feat.  But in the end, what did it all mean?  I thought by far the most compelling aspects were Frank's relationship with his daughter, and that storyline was super-undeveloped to the point of being almost half-baked, as well as any insight into how he actually felt about the people he had to kill, of which we get almost none.  The movie should have been Frank's story through and through, but it seemed like once Pacino and Pesci agreed to be in it, Hoffa and Bufalino's characters were bulked up .. to what purpose?  Still, enjoyable.  Flawed, but still good.  Nothing I'll think about much or watch again anytime soon though.

It has more Golden Globe nominations than any other movie, including The Irishman. In fact, Netflix has received more nominations than the traditional film studios. Eat that Disney, Sony, etc!

It is Frank's story through and through, but you don't get spoon-fed.

Knives Out - One of the most entertaining films I've seen all year. I love a good mystery film, and this is no exception. It reminds me of Get Out in how straightforward it is with its premise. There are many twists and turns, and it's funny, but it's also skillfully made and well-acted too. The cast is great from top to bottom, but I thought Ana De Armas in particular was fantastic (she's my current best actress win). I think this is a movie I'll be returning to quite frequently. - 8 / 10

Also reviews of The Irishman, and Frozen II. Sadly I probably won't be publishing any more reviews at the month, since the website I write reviews for is going under in December.

The word to mouth on this film has been incredibly positive. Thats why I watched it.

There's a Hitchcock like quality to the film, i realized.

Yes. It's also really well-cast and shot. I'm not even sure I spotted everything about the film on first viewing too. It's going to be interesting and fun, to go back and rewatch it a a second time.

Frozen 2

Disappointing.

Apart from everyone returning and the big budget sheen, Frozen 2 feels like a DTV sequel in terms of plot. There was no reason to make it aside from money. Some nice songs, including "Show Yourself", but nothing like the first one.

Considering how bad fans wanted a sequel, maybe Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee should've left fans wanting more.

What did you think of Brick?

He reminded me of my cousin. Never worked a day in his life and always had his hand in grandma's pocket.

I think Chris Evans is a terrific actor.

And I love a good murder mystery. Sadly they are few and far between.

The Irishman

Nice and cozy but maybe not as spectacular as some make it out to be. But hey, Meth Damon made it to a Scorsese movie, which is something the real Matt Damon can't say. BTW, I watched it in two takes. 7/10

7/10! I would give it a 6/10. We did it in one sitting but a lot of getting up and moving around. Its not a masterpiece by any means.

Parasite. Now this is an interesting film. Not the kind of thing you'd expect Odeon to show (one of their mystery screenings). I'm not quite sure what I think of it yet (which, I believe, is the point anyway) but it kept me intrigued all the way through. Somewhere between comedy, drama, tragedy, thriller and even with a pinch of horror (in a way)... Not exactly conventional. But that's good. Most films I've seen this year were desperately mediocre so it's refreshing to see something like this for a change. Cinema isn't dead yet.

Parasite kinda reminded me of those folk theater bedroom farces where the secret lover always ends up hiding in the closet of the bedroom. It's not really my kind of humor. And just like Snowpiercer, somewhere along the line, it becomes a different movie. In Snowpiercer, it changed from drama to burlesque. In Parasite, it changed from being burlesque to drama.
