Nick Fury, Emilia Clarke, Skrulls, Maria Hill and a trailer that doesn't look like a comedy. This is definitively the MCU series that I'm looking forward to the most.

That Quentin Tarantino Marvel movie you've been dreaming about is not going to happen anytime soon.

Quentin Tarantino Says Marvel Directors Are ‘Hired Hands,’ So He Won’t Join the MCU: ‘I’m Not Looking for a Job’

In the interview, he also mentions he likes Star Wars but prefers Close Encounters.

Neither fans of the big sci-fi/fantasy franchises, nor fans of Tarantino, nor the people who are fans of both want Tarantino to make a franchise movie.

Some people on Reddit and Twitter were fancasting Tarantino as the director of a Luke Cage/Iron Fist Heroes for Hire movie before the Netflix shows.

I wasn’t sure where to post this, in the Marvel or the DC thread, but whatever.

God knows I’ve had a lot of fun with the MCU over the years. I have seen every Marvel movie in the cinema since before the the MCU even existed - showing back to The X-Men in 2000, then whatever movie came out leading up to Iron Man in 2008 and then finally End Game in 2019.

I’ve kept up pretty much until now. I even saw The Eternals (knowing it would be bad), and the Dr Strange Multiverse movie (had to see them tie up the Wanda Vision show).

But from the upcoming movies, I’m much more looking forward to the DC slate than the Marvel one.

I actively said no to a group of friends going to see Wakanda Forever. I have no intention of seeing Ant-Man And The Quantumania nor The Marvels nor The Thunderbolts.

I am only casually interested in Guardians 3 and Captain America 3. I’ll catch them on Disney+.

I did, however go to see Black Adam. I am

looking forward to the Shazam sequel.

I am looking forward to the Aquaman sequel. I can’t wait to see what DC will do with The Flash.

So DC over Marvel currently. Anyone else feeling this?

I have been watching and enjoying superhero movies since childhood. They're a huge part of my movie life... Or at least they were until recently.

Over the last two or three years, I've been slowly losing interest in those big budget Marvel/DC movies and TV shows. It's like there's SO MUCH superhero productions on movie theaters and streaming right now, and because of that I'm feeling a little burned out. I really can't blame those who complain about "too much capes", even though I spent most of my life so far watching these.

These days, I get most of my superhero kick not from movies, but rather from their original medium: comic books. It has always been a lifelong dream of mine to be able to get into superhero comics, but until the pandemic I had only read a few of them, mostly the most famous story arcs. But since Covid, I was able to finally read them in an organized way, thanks to the very helpful internet guides.

I discovered a wonderful world that doesn't need $250 million budgets in special effects to tell epic stories about aliens, crime fighters, multiverses, powerful villains, etc. The comics have stories that are so wild and insane, the movies actually look tame and safe in comparison.

So yeah, these days I think that, when it comes to capes and tights, comics are much more entertaining than big budget movies and streaming shows.

That said, I watched the new Black Panther movie (the first MCU product I've bothered to see since Dr Strange 2) and I really liked it. It felt better and more thoughtful than most Marvel movies. But, to me, it was still an exception rather than the rule.

Yea, I can miss reading comic books. But I think the last one I picked up was 10-15 years ago (I think it was an Indiana Jones anthology?) and it was great.

I do love the physical media, the turning of the pages, the feel, he weight. I guess that’s why I still buy regular ol’ books I guess.

I’ve switched to digital for both comic books and regular books, and will never go back.

I still love comics, but superhero comics from the big 2 frustrate me a lot, because a lot of the time there are way-too-busy mega-events, and everything in every line ties into the mega-event - so there aren’t simple stories being told during those months, and the event is inscrutable unless you read a hundred books, many of which might not be in your regular series pulls.

Marvel Studios did what Star Wars and Indiana Jones should’ve done.  Build the world and not take a break.   Of course it’s too much, but I give them credit for pumping them out while they could. I wish the 90s were filled with SW and Indiana Jones sequels.

With any universe, it is usually at its best and peaks early on when it is still small, but established.  Once you get into multiverses, multiple iterations of characters with different identities, and cumbersome high stakes stories, it starts to feel like homework to keep up. Like the source material itself, the first 100 issues are usually the best, and then they have to try to do more more more.

I want to see a Tarantino Bond film. One off, set in the 60's, with all the trappings that suggests.

Villain: Shatner

Him and Brosnan bandied around the idea of them doing Casino Royale, but nothing ever came of it.

I believe at that time that the rights were still tied up. To say nothing of if the Broccoli's had the rights they wouldn't have let Tarantino do it and if they didn't they wouldn't have let Brosnan do it.

It always annoys me that Casino Royale was basically the movie Brosnan was trying to get them to make for ten years. (in type if not in the specific story.) And then they fired him to make it.

Saw this on Reddit, I think it's a good topic for discussion.

Do fans of the comics (or any source material for a movie or TV show) really aren't the best suited to adapt them into a film? Are the "not-fans" the best candidates?

I think that all around Hollywood we have both good and bad examples of adaptations produced by fans and good and bad examples of adaptations not produced by fans (like the atrocious Netflix Witcher show, which had its writers actively mocking the books and games, even though they were much better received than their shitty adaptation).

But what do you guys think?

QT apparently wanted to do it as a black-and-white period piece, as close to the Fleming novel as possible. I reckon Bond's 'origin story' starring the fiftysomething actor who'd just played him as the seasoned MI6 operative for 4 films probably would've been a little weird (and IMO, the bits of the CR we did get where Bond acts with impulsive hotheadedness would've made more sense if the early 20s Cavill had been cast rather than the late 30s Craig).

On the one hand I think there's a lot of value there. But I also think it's too rigid and hard and fast.

OTOH is there any way that you describe Sam Raimi as not "A Fan"?

OTOOH don't hire writers / directors who HATE the source material.

IMO the best person to adapt something is the person who isn’t beholden to the source material.  They’ll be hellbent on making a good movie instead of making _________.

Are we meant to think that SWORD dissolved as an organization after WandaVision?  They seemed like a big deal but in all the stuff since then Damage Control has been the only game in town for government organizations focused on super beings.

Isn't SWORD for space threats though?

Well damn. Now I'm worried Ethan Hawke is having trouble putting food on the table. I hope he's going to be OK for Thanksgiving.

Should we start a GoFundMe or something?

-Nick, who is concerned about Ethan.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is such a joy!!

It was truly great. So funny and really sweet.

If you like Mantis, and I love Mantis, this is for you. It's basicly her special and I loved it. Pom Klementief is so good here. Really funny and I'm glad she finally gets more to do after she was so well used in Infinity War.

Kevin Bacon's part in this is also so funny and he is totally game. Great to see.

This made me very excited about both Christmas and the 3rd Guardians film. Wonderful way to spend 45 minutes.

I dunno about "truly great," but we enjoyed the GOTG holiday special last night.  It's a nice watch with some solid jokes.

It also introduced a few pretty important narrative changes:

1. The Guardians have now bought Knowhere, the skull shaped hive of scum and villainy, last seen I believe in Infinity War when Thanos took the Reality Stone (or whichever, I mix up which stones were where)

2. Cosmo was introduced as a full character and member of the team (good stuff)

3. Mantis is also a child of Ego and revealed it to Star-Lord that they are sort of siblings
