The MCU - Marvel Cinematic Universe

Very moot point to be making if she's gonna mock people over pronouns in bio anyway. Should she be able to do it? Sure. Does that make her immune to criticism? Not quite. The real issue is that social media is not something you can easily police without risking violating the first amendment, so it'd be hard to think of a solution to online harassment that won't make banning people too easy if the justification is rather flimsy. Especially with how much X got a new slew of problems with the current management, as well as really amplifying old ones, so it's a sucky situation either way.

Is it insensitve to compare that with the greatest humanitarian tragedy of the last century? Absolutely. But her point, even if stated in a dumb manner, was: demonization and vilification of people who think different than you has led to tragedy before and can do it again.

Thanks for your efforts, Edmilson, but no matter how you state it, some will choose to not see your point and hers, because—surprise, surprise—they strongly disagree with her politics.

But can we just agree that either side comparing anything to the Holocaust—no matter how salient the point—is just a boneheaded thing to do?

Wasn't there a scientist guy that created a rule that if any argument keeps going long enough eventually someone will compare something to Hitler?

Found it: it's the Godwin law:

Carano wouldn't be "demonized" anymore if she abandoned her shitty views, but sure, let's defend dumb people for pages upon pages.

Better than defending big corporations for pages and pages.

Mark Hamill has some REALLY shitty views, IMHO and for example. Very little demonization.

I think the only creative who I have made the decision "Never again" regarding his or her material is Roman Polanski. And I still play Jerry's score to Chinatown from time to time.

Oh, and I didn't go see The Flash, but that was pretty easy.

Good thing nobody is "defending big corporations for pages and pages" then.

Nor is anyone "defending dumb people".

And if you're (and that's a rhetorical "you") making excuses for why it's OK for Disney to fire employees simply because they don't like what they say, you're defending a big corporation.  Which, inexplicably, many dumb people seem eager to do.

I'll say it again: Actors, or anyone who's selling a product to a general public, should keep their views to themselves—or at least tread lightly. Something which Mark "Go-Force-Yourself" Hamill has been really bad at lately.

For that matter, directors and other creatives would do well to stop using social media to express their every thought and become antagonistic with the fans.

Make your product, go out on a press tour to promote it, and just shut the hell up.

And that's my last word on the subject, since we're way off topic here, and I sense that the hammer's going to come down at any moment... :)

Apology accepted. And I probably hit back harder than necessary.

A good reason why politics is rightly banned from this place.

Now, someone, please get us back on topic! (what was the topic again?)

The werewolf speaks again:

Quote

In July, Kevin Feige revealed that “we have writers who are going to be delivering us a draft relatively soon” for a fourth “Spider-Man” installment. Rumors immediately started swirling online that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire may join Tom Holland in the film. Speaking with us at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere for “We Live in Time,” we asked Garfield if he’s involved with the MCU project.

“I mean, like the internet is a big place,” Garfield told IndieWire. “I think there’s a lot of people who will just say anything to get clicks. So you might have been duped, I’m afraid.”

On the one hand, after No Way Home, who's gonna believe a word he says? On the other, I hope he's telling the truth this time.

Yeah, the idea was fun and well executed, but it was a one-and-done.

And I really wouldn't mind it if the multiverse was never mentioned again in the MCU.

Hey that's the guy who directed Shang-Chi and was announced to be the director of Avengers 5, before it was given to the Russos instead

Getting the reins to Spider-Man is a nice consolation prize. I wouldn't call it a step down. It might be a step up, even, since the next instalment of Spider-Man may be "easier" to pull off than another Avengers.

His work in 'Shang-Chi' was solid, so Spidey looks to be in good hands.

Wow Marvel really doesn't care about Shang Chi huh.

The movie had great reviews, positive fan response, great box office for pandemic standards... If I had to guess I'd say they got so busy with all the movies and shows and bringing back Infinity Saga-era characters, managing the Jonathan Majors' controversy, etc., that they couldn't give this promising new franchise the attention it needs. Now it'll be even more forgotten than it already was because Spiderman brings much more money.

This is like the Home Alone movie: the family has grown so big and complicated that they aren't paying attention to their younger kids lol

Take this with a healthy does of salt. Spoilering just in case it turns out not to be a lot of shit since scoopers have gotten a lot wrong lately, but this particular scooper has pretty high reliability.

Spoiler

It's been reported that Sony and Marvel have been butting heads over whether to make Spider-Man 4 the grounded, street-level affair teased at the end of No Way Home (Marvel's preference) or whether to make it multiversal and move the ground-level stuff to Spider-Man 5 (Sony's preference). Reports have indicated that Sony has gotten their way, which people took to mean more Andrew and Tobey cameofests diluting what made No Way Home work. As well as this, reshoots have taken place for Venom: The Last Dance and while we don't know the context of these reshoots, a reliable scooper has come forward with information that they may pertain to linking Venom: The Last Dance to Spider-Man 4, and that while the film may go the way of the multiverse, it's not going to be that aforementioned cameofest - rather an excuse to finally get the two Toms in the same space, and that Knull is not 'one-and-done' - rather, he will be the main villain of Spider-Man 4 as well, with Venom and Spider-Man teaming up after an assumed first-act fight.

If this is even partly correct, I can accept the multiverse in the next story in this particular instance. It might also partly explain that really confusing shot of Eijofor's character capturing the Symbiote fragment left in the bar at the end of NWH in the trailer, despite being an SSU character, assuming said shot is not removed from the final film like Keaton's scenes tying Morbius to the MCU were.

You know every once in a while (often when my daughter tries talking to me about her shows or comics) I realize what I sound like when I'm talking about Star Trek or Star Wars or the Donner cut of Superman II.

I got about half of that. And I think I've even seen most of what's being talked about.

Similarly when I watch a sequel to a film that I saw once, didn't pay much attention to, and now they're hanging major plot points on deep cuts from this thing I was only kind of aware of? I think "Ohhhh. This is what it's like watching Endgame for normal people!" Or even worse "Ohhhh. This is why normal people don't understand Pirates of the Caribbean 3!" (And why I adore it.)

That rumor is a bummer, if true. Daughter and I were actually talking about Spidey 4 the other day in exactly this context. You can't hit us in the gut repeatedly with No Way Home and then come back and say "Oh, it's all OK now. We've fixed everything." Really (for good or ill) none of the Spidey films have been "More of the same." I don't think either of the sequels have been as good or as pure as Homecoming.

But I really wanted (want) to see them try something really new with Spidey 4.

Well, all of the Raimi villains were "made evil". (One of the Raimi films weaknesses, IMHO.) So it would make sense that you could un-evil them.

Honestly, at least Doc Ock was already there at the moment of his death in 2.  I think Sandman had a similar thing going on? (Though to know for sure that would require me to think about Spider-man 3 after I left the theater in 2008).

Did you mean 2007? SM3 was released on that year.

2008 was the year of the first MCU movie Iron Man:

Weird how hard Marvel has been leaning for years now on nostalgia, not just for older Marvel content, but for all of pop culture, and life in general. Wandavision playing on old sitcoms, Captain Marvel going to Blockbuster, and I guess one of the first instances was the Awesome Mix from Guardians? Both the song selection, and the "old tech" of cassette tapes. Is all of this just Marvel trying to recreate the magic of Guardians 1? Is nostalgia for... anything at all... just a cheap trick that actually works on us most of the time? Are young people interested in this type of regurgitation because they missed the stuff that's being referenced the first time around? Is Marvel just out of ideas? I need some answers!
