Technically Hulk is in the movie, he's just red. And not Bruce Banner lol.

The movie could've been a lot better if it were Sam Wilson and Bruce Banner working together, then by the end they have to fight the Red Hulk. Trying to force a rivalry between Sam and Ross was just dumb.

And Angelina was pretty. But I was aching for it to finally finish so I could move on to the next entry, Moon Knight, which was just as boring. Things wouldn't pick up until the one after, Doc Weird 2.

I finally watched Deadpool and Wolverine a few weeks ago.  It was really fun, I enjoyed it.  The movie kind of does everything it sets out to do really well, Deadpool himself is funny and less annoying then I remember from the other movies, Hugh Jackman was really good and funny, but what elevates it to another level are all the secret cameos, that are really supporting roles for the middle act.  Chris Evans particularly made me laugh a lot.  The story was whatever and the third act was definitely on the weak side, but the overall effect of the movie overrides any issues for me, really.  The end credits was a nice love letter to the Fox era.

A movie starring Reynolds but with a score by JNH performed by a huge orchestra and choir.

What makes you think I'm interested in a JNH biography? His life wasn't exciting or worthy of a movie. Just because I'm a fan of his music doesn't mean I'd pay for a movie ticket to watch his life story. I WOULD pay to see footage of the recording sessions of his scores though ;)

But no, my problem with RR is that I'm a massive fan of Green Lantern comic books. I have a huge collection of them and over the past few years I've been more and more involved with the fandom. A movie series adapting Geoff Johns' run on GL (but correctly, not that bullshit that was the 2011 movie) would be a dream come true.

By 2011, GL was in the height of its popularity. Johns' run was in the height of popularity, and the franchise had been front and center of the last DC comics event (Blackest Night).

However, as we all know, the movie was a complete failure. It lost WB a lot of money, while Reynolds didn't exactly became the next Robert Downey Jr.

So both WB and RR spent the next decade doing everything they could to sink the franchise and the characters. To utterly and completely destroy it in the eyes of those who don't read comics. They put a lot of effort on the task of ruining the characters' public image.

Because of them, we didn't have a new Green Lantern in live-action for almost 15 years. It is set to change now with Gunn and Guy Gardner on Superman and the HBO show. But even then I'm not exactly jumping for joy. Their view for the franchise is at odds with mine.

A live-action prestige show? A character with such unique powers and amazing lore and you'll ground them on Earth for a gritty and realistic cop show? The franchise works better as an epic space opera, with aliens, other planets, etc. It's supposed to be Star Wars, not Law & Order, particularly not Law & Order set in a boring and common United States town.

But yeah, TLDR Reynolds was so bitter that the Green Lantern movie did poorly that he (with a help from WB) ruined the public's perception of the character. Gunn is bringing them back but I don't care for how he's doing that.

Do you have examples of Reynolds and Warner Brothers intentionally sandbagging the public’s perception of Hal Jordan/Green Lantern?  I remember Reynolds making fun of his own bad movie (maybe in Deadpool), but not much else.

What would WB stand to benefit by intentionally ruining their own character (and therefore stifling their income stream not just in comics and movies, but also action figures, statues, etc etc?).  They also had numerous comics, an animated GL TV show, and a few direct-to-video GL movies (as well as plenty of DTV Justice League movies that included Lanterns) after the release of the Reynolds movie.

BTW I find Reynolds extremely annoying IRL (which helps him in Deadpool for me but not much else) - this is not a defense of him.

Yeah none of that rang a bell or made sense to me, either. Reynolds really seemed to believe in the Hal Jordan character. Really personally invested in playing the role, even if he ended up rueful about how the film turned out.

Yeah Deadpool made a jokey reference or two, but it didn’t seem nasty… especially compared with how Reynolds’s previous incarnation of Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine was absolutely (and justifiably) lambasted.

Well...

Seven Times Ryan Reynolds Mocked the 'Green Lantern' Movie

Ryan Reynolds Throws Shade at His Infamous Green Lantern Movie

And even if this is just a silly joke from the actor who plays a silly comedic comic book character, it has all contributed for the negative perception of the non-comic reading public (but even those who do read comics but never touched a GL comic in their lives) have about the characters, the universe and etc.

Reynolds' attitude just reeks of "look how much cooler I am than this lame character", and made everyone wary of even attempting to go near a Green Lantern for almost 15 years. It's arrogant of his part to put himself as above the bad material he has worked with, especially since his career has many poorly received movies.

Again, even if this wasn't his intention, his constant mockery and scorn of the movie influenced everyone else who could have thought the character is cool and at least tried to watch the animated series or the movies, or even approached the comics (Green Lantern is one of the most accessible comic book superheroes for newcomers, much more than Spider-Man or Batman or X-Men).

As for Warner Brothers, there's this:

Of course, DC is (in)famously known for allowing scathing parodies of their characters (I've never seen Marvel allow their characters to be ridiculed like that).

But the poor quality of the 2011 movie combined with Reynolds' "look how ridiculous that crappy movie is!" attitude contributed for WB to downplay the characters and the universe for the years that followed.

As I said on the previous post, before the movie's release the brand was at its height of popularity thanks to Geoff's epic tenure on the comics. But since the movie went down in infamy, the animated series was canceled, the character's importance on the comics was downplayed and WB did everything they could to stop a GL from appearing in live-action.

Anyway, whether you think Reynolds' arrogance harmed the brand or not, I can't stand the guy and his Deadpool performance. Him ridiculing a great comic book character just to climb higher in his career only made him more detestable than he already was.

The only repercussion the 2011 movie had that I knew about was the cancelation of the Animated Series.

Ryan watched the movie for the first time since its released in the pandemic and said some things about it on Twitter, he was less rude about it and to my knowledge, has been ever since. (That's not me defending the man)

  • 2 weeks later...

Watching some scenes from the Avengers movies on YouTube I was reminded when these movies delivered on being great entertaining popcorn blockbusters with awesome superhero smackdowns.

If Marvel wants to regain the crown of the blockbuster hill in Hollywood they'll need to start wowing audiences once again.
