Smeltington 1,420
Well, it turns out A Toast! is Spoiler just a series of Ludlows!! lol. I enjoyed it though. A Toast to Ludlow! Some parts are also very similar to the brassy Quidditch intro fanfare. Which, now that I think about it, does seem to be a bit of a Ludlow variation as well. filmmusic 1,799
For those who listened to it: How was the piece?
Popular Post Smeltington 1,420
As I mentioned, it was mostly comprised of a bunch of Ludlow material, including both the typical Ludlow we know and love, as well as some fanfaric material similar to the opening of "Quidditch". It doesn't use the whole orchestra; the focus is mainly on the brass, as well as some percussion. The concert program says it's "scored for 5 trumpets, 6 horns, 4 trombones, 2 tubas, glockenspiel, and tubular bells." It's a fun, breezy Williams fanfare, and was a nice opening to the concert, even if it doesn't cover new ground. The Lost Folio 183
Why call it "Ludlow"? Sounds to me like this kind of material is always performed on the strings. I'm curious to hear how that same kind of motif can work in a piece for brass ensemble...
Jay 37,042
Because the first time the motif appeared in a John Williams score was the album track "Ludlow's Demise" from the 1997 The Lost World score album

michael_grig 464
Nice little piece! I'm always amazed how John Williams can use the craziest jazz harmonies and still make it sound "classically symphonic"!

I'll still take it over his concerto style writing.
