The Liberty Fanfare (new performance)

Thor

Recommended Posts

I couldn't find any previous thread on this fanfare.

In any case, I stumbled over a new performance of this piece in the Thursday Live program of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra (Kringkastingsorkesteret), which is different enough from all the other versions out there (slightly slower and more regal) that I thought it might be interesting to you.

Hopefully, you can play this in your country, but it's the first piece played in the program after the introduction:

Hey thanks for the heads up Thor!

Yeah it is a tad slower than the recordings we have but I like this interpretation. :)

Thank you, Thor. I never thought the character of this piece could be affected so much by decreasing its tempo. The two recordings which most people hear, made by Keith Lockhart and John Williams' both with the Boston Pops, actually sound very similar. I think John Williams' older recording is analog, though.

I was catching up with this fanfare a few days ago. It seems I only have this recording on my BY REQUEST Best of JW Boston Pops cd only. Whereas its nowhere to be found on various other Williams SONY compilation albums, Even though most of the fanfares (including the Olympics) were reprised on many of their albums and even sport new recordings.  Did I miss this or is it the only Boston Pops recording to date?

The Liberty Fanfare has been recorded by Keith Lockhart and Boston Pops at least on the A Splash of Pops album in 1999.

Alas, the concert in my original link (first post) has now been removed. I didn't even remember to download it myself (nor was there any option to). Did anyone?

I have three versions:

By Request - JW/BPO

American Jubilee - Kunzel/CPO

The Best of John Williams - Hayman/PRO

The latter was the first time I heard of this piece, along with The Olympic Fanfare and The Mission.

I have the same three. By Request remains my favourite, because I adore the middle section, which doesn't sound so noble in the Kunzel version. (I don't remember the Hayman, but I'm sure it's as awful as the rest of that CD)

Iam just surprised there is only one recording from Williams own performance and that on an early Bostopn Pops album. Whereas there at least 2 new recordings of the Liberty Fanfare out there which was used in many of the Sony Classical albums(besides The Boston Pops which has the first recording)

Will JW write a suite for Donald Trump's inauguration?

Of course!

I hear they're considering two titles:

Air and Gold-Plated Gifts

With Malice Toward All

I love the ostinato bridge in this fanfare. Williams reprises the same in his SPACE CAMP End Title theme of course. I wonder if SPACE CAMP material was actually composed much earlier. Could it have been an alternate which Williams would revive and reuse for the ill fated movie.
