HunterTech 742
The big issue I have with the film supposedly being canned because of its quality is the fact that studios usually tend to just lift review embargoes on the day of release if they feel they have a stinker on their hands. Hell, given what has been successful in the past, I think a lot of the time they might not even care if the movie is bad if they know profit is guaranteed (Michael Bay Transformers being the obvious one). Why would the studio that fully approved BvS and theatrical JL suddenly care about quality? Since Affleck is supposedly replacing Keaton for Aquaman 2, and the Flash (of which Batgirl is intended to tie with) is continuing to be delayed, I much more believe that the new higher ups have very specific plans for the DC universe, and that they're intent on minimizing the changes the recent projects were going to do. Oh yeah, and these new hires being very committed to continuing the HP franchise despite the diminishing returns of the Fantastic Beasts series would certainly suggest to me that it isn't quite about quality as much as it is the branding. (Also, why put stock in test screenings if Justice League got decent results, yet that ended up being received poorly by most. It tends to be so shaky with how much they can negatively affect movies sometimes.)
Edmilson 4,973
This Hollywood Reporter article explains very well why the movie was cancelled. The main reason: money. This is particularly insightful: Quote At a certain point, a source notes, it doesn’t make financial sense to spend $80 million or $90 million on a streaming movie, as it won’t necessarily attract more subscribers than, say, a $40 million movie. (In an earnings disclosure in April, HBO and its HBO Max streaming service counted 76.8 million combined global subscribers.) Going forward, a streaming film will be made for a more modest number, “and if it’s for theatrical, it better feel theatrical,” notes a knowledgeable source. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/batgirl-hbo-max-movie-dc-canceled-1235191932/ TSMefford

rough cut 1,470
Is Keaton really that big of a draw? Do the general public today remember the movies and would be excited by his return? Or is it a small group of 40-50 year olds - which means a great deal of the movie going public would miss the point. Wouldn’t Christian Bale - who is more recent in memory (and also generally hailed as the best Batman ever?) - be a surer bet?

Disco Stu 15,475
Gough had that turkey neck going on. I'd be willing to bet that takin' out a turkey neck is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries for older male actors (not claiming that Keaton has had that surgery, just speculating generally), in terms of something that's very common for normal older men but relatively rare for aging movie stars. But I'm not sure releasing it would necessarily save money. There's the rest of the post-production costs, plus the promotion and marketing costs, which they would need, otherwise just dumping the movie without hype or press would make MUCH less money than a promoted movie. And who knows what other "mystery" costs might be floating around needing to be paid at some point if they continued? But it still sucks, no two ways about it. (Though having said that, they've gotten a fair amount of press for the cancellation, maybe they can just stop where they're at and "leak" the movie as-is online...? I don’t know why I’m sticking my nose so far into this since I was never much of a Batman fan. Not even back in ‘89, and back then Batman was everywhere.
