Including the alternate versions of the FOTR prologue, we have eight(!) main titles from Howard Shore's Middle-Earth scores. I'm curious to see which ones people find their favorite.

Personally, I would rank them as such:

The Lord of the Rings:

1. Roots and Beginnings

2. One Ring to Rule Them All

3. Foundations of Stone

4. One Ring to Rule Them All (Alternate)

5. The Prophecy

The Hobbit:

A. Fire and Water

2. My Dear Frodo

D. The Quest for Erebor

Edit: New poll is now public poll.

I do love the opening of the alternate FOTR too.

It has that ancient feel you were talking about.

The Lord of the Rings:

1. One Ring to Rule Them All (Alternate)/The Prophecy Hybrid

2. Foundations of Stone

3. Roots and Beginnings

4. One Ring to Rule Them All

The Hobbit:

1. My Dear Frodo

2. Fire and Water

3. The Quest for Erebor

The Hobbit:

A. Fire and Water

2. My Dear Frodo

D. The Quest for Erebor

A. 2. D.?

(I must also point out that both Roots and Beginnings and My Dear Frodo have two different versions)

I don't recall two different versions of Roots and Beginnings. Isn't the OST track just edited down from the full recordings?

Man I wish there had been 2 discs of Rarities and we had gotten everything interesting unreleased, and not covered by dialogue.

Home Alone reference. I left out the "Roots and Beginnings" alternate since we don't have a clean version of it and wasn't aware there was a "My Dear Frodo" alternate. Where could I hear it?

In a perfect world, Shore would release at least one more "Rarities" disc through Howe.

Also, Jay, how do I make a public poll?

It's one of the options when you're making the poll. You can't change it after the fact unless you want to wipe out the votes already cast.

Howard has a certain talent for logo music, and setting the scene for the film to come.

Very very much so agreed!!

The rarities has an alternate opening.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgxJf9YupQI

Aren't OST and film version also different? I recall a more gentle version on the OST, without tremolo.

This poll is stupid! It's not a battle of 7 main titles since you gotta pick 1 for each trilogy!

Agreed. Why call it a battle of 8 if it's one for 5, and one for 3? That's two battles in my book.

Whatever. "Foundations of Stone" takes them all anyway. One of my all-time favorite film intros.

Fucking hell? Where did my votes go?

I made it a public poll, but that reset the votes. You can always vote again...

Fixed what? You still have to vote twice!

That's why I changed the thread title to "Battles."
