Omen II 1,235
The Royal Albert Hall website is now listing extra performances of this on Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th March 2016, although tickets do not appear to have gone on sale yet (maybe they are waiting to see how well the Saturday performances sell first?).Also, any film music fans in the London area at a loose end on the Friday 11th March would almost certainly enjoy this concert by the same orchestra and at the same venue:http://www.royalalberthall.com/tickets/events/2016/western-music-in-concert/?utm_source=wordfly&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2015enewsletterJuly16&utm_content=version_A&emailsource=
Richard Penna 3,683
How did BttF go down, considering it's one of the most sparsely scored films there is?I've been to 3 'live to projection' concerts (Gladiator, FotR and Star Trek), all of which were almost wall-to-wall scoring. All were good, but Trek was unforgettable.

#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
I've attended two of these concerts and the fact that the film was playing (with sound) wasn't as much as a distraction as I thought.I would obviously prefer to have a performance of Raiders full score without the film, but that would never happen. This format is quite marketable.

Gurkensalat 340
I was there, meeting with an old friend. Great concert! The Luzerne concert hall, one of the best acoustics in the world, seemed virtually sold out. Some impressions:Sound from the movie was hollow and difficult to understand. It overshadowed some more subtle passages like the Basket game, unfortunately. Other times, when the brass was on full, the orchestra drowned out the movie sound, which was fine by me. This shows how much dynamic range is reduced in the mixing of the movie sound. I especially liked the fat tuba sound!after a while there was a small synchro glitch between movie picture and sound which was corrected after a while. no big deal.Ark theme e.g. in Map room was without choir which was imitated by synthesizer. Ditto for some exotic instruments like cymbalon. OK for me.There was an intermission when Indy starts digging at the Well of Souls. As exit music into the intermission the orchestra played a rendition of the Raiders march from the movie, don´t know exactly which. After intermission they first played Adventures of Mutt from Indy 4 without announcement, but it fitted nicely. Lead directly into part2 of the movie. On the whole the orchestra played almost perfectly, perhaps a very few notes not quite there, but impressive feat for a complex soundtrack like this. Seemed always in sync with the picture. The fantastic concert hall enhanced the music. I was sitting in the middle of the last row on the most upper balcony and heard perfectly. There was a whole Indiana Jones experience with dinner before the concert in an adjoining room, but very expensive. Did not participate that, the concert was enough for me. I came extra from Heidelberg to Luzern for this and no regrets! Scarpia and Jay

Jim Ware 526
Desert Chase was spot on. Some minor performance issues elsewhere (Basket Chase in particular) but I'm sure the second performance tomorrow will be fine. The technical issues with the audio of the film were more distracting, with sync drifting noticeably several times. Again, I fully expect this to be resolved for future performances.

Jim Ware 526
No tech problems this evening. Pretty much perfect aside from one or two brass clams (easily done in this score). Popular Post TownerFan 4,983
Alrighty, here's my report from my concert attending last week. I went to Lucerne together with two dear friends last Tuesday (December 29) to attend the film concert setting of Raiders of the Lost Ark, performed by 21st Century Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Ludwig Wicki. I had very high expectations about it because I was aware about how good these people are, yet the experience was even much more exciting, thrilling and exhilarating than I could possibly imagine. First of all, the performance was absolutely flawless--both the orchestra and conductor really seem to be born to play this score, there were not a wrong note all throughout, nor a failed sync with the images. And they played everything without any click-track (the conductor had only a small screen on the side of the podium with the film running with streamers and punches). Despite the difficulty of performing everything so precisely and close attention, the orchestra never seemed too cold or just too technical, but everything was performed with flair and proper musicality (many of the players had grin on their faces from start to finish). Conductor Wicki really understands how Williams' music should be performed and his conducting was flawless and vibrant, thanks also to the spectacular acoustics of KKL concert hall, truly one of the most beautiful concert halls of the world. Really, it's hard to choose highlights because it was a shiver of excitement from beginning to end. The big set-pieces (the prologue, "The Basket Game", "The Map Room," "Desert Chase" and "Miracle of the Ark") were obviously the moments where the chills and thrills were stronger, but literally everything was done with such fluidity that the whole audience was in awe. Even the synth choir was balanced very well. The mix of dialogues and sound effects was sometimes covered by the monstrous volume of the orchestra (especially in the action sequences), but personally this wasn't a problem AT ALL because it is always the other way round and for once the music was able to be absolute queen of the night. In fact, watching the movie in this unique way made you realize more strongly than ever how big and important is the role of the orchestra in this film, which becomes a real character of equal importance to those we see on the screen. The film is an all-time masterpiece of rhythm and editing, which allowed Williams to write a real ballet-like score, where everything moves along at Swiss clock precision (pardon the pun!) and everything pays off. There's a lot of Max Steiner-inspired mickeymousing all throughout which underlines both the tiniest detail (think about Marion puffing the cigarette smoke in Toht's face) and the biggest event, but the tone never seems too heavy or ponderous. Quite the contrary, it has the lighthearted feel of a great fun ballet score. On a more nerd side, the performed score retained all the film edits (which luckily are only a very few and all tastefully done), however the short piece of music where the Ark crate burns from inside on the cargo (right after Marion's Theme) was properly restored. Also, it was nice to have all the original manuscript cue titles retained on the concert program, which also included a short nice note from JW himself. Last but not least, it was thrilling to see the film together with an audience in a packed auditorium, all laughing and cheering in perfect sync. Raiders is a masterpiece in the history of both film and film music, one of my five all-time favorite movies ever and surely one of the highest peaks ever reached in the career of both Steven Spielberg and John Williams. What more I can say? If you have the opportunity to attend a performance, don't hesitate and go see it in this unique format. I'm sure that you will be as excited as myself. skyy38 21
And as such with the "mtv generation (s)", most everything musical in the now, *has* to be accompanied by "visuals" so the audience won't get "bored". How come other orchestras don't do the same with "the 1812 overture?" Oh, that's right, because the music was written *first*! Does anyone here, remember listening to a song on the radio, and imagining what happened, in their minds, without any "pictures?" Oh yeah, I am aware, that in the early days of motion pictures, the music *had* to be supplied, by an "in house organist", because the "recording process" had been invented, but not adapted, for motion picture use. But today, since most everyone does not possess their *own* imagination, we are expected to fish out $$$ for something that we can still get from home? And much more cheaply? Symphony orchestras shouldn't be "darked out" in favor of a movie that everyone has seen hundreds of times before. And anyone attending a symphony performance, *anywhere*, should be paying attention to the *orchestra*.
