Thomas Newman's SPECTRE

Sharkissimo

Recommended Posts

According to Barbara Broccoli, Newman's written and recorded source music that's been played at the Day of the Dead sequence.

Broccoli: But it's a lot of fun. That's the thing... It's very exciting for everybody. It makes them step up to the plate when you have a challenge like that. Sam had a real vision of his version of the Day of the Dead, and everybody really embraced it. Tom Newman created special music for it and everything. So it feels like a big celebration to us.

I'm mildly looking forward to this score - something à la Skyfall would certainly be worth a few listens, but I'd be even more interested in having Newman come out of his current comfort zone and write more melodically oriented action cues.

According to a "Warren Ringham" in the "James Bond Music" Facebook group:

I can reveal the soundtrack is being recorded at Abbey Road as we speak...

From the recording sessions of the trailer music, composed by Jeff Pfiefer (he's done all of the Craig Bond trailers).

Interesting... baritone and bass sax.

Cool! Wonder if that reflects plans for the score or if it's just his own thing....

Is it me or does it look like one of the trombone players (guy in the plaid shirt) is doubling on a euphonium or baritone horn? Check out the suspended gongs at the back! Is that a Taiko drum to the left of the timpani?

Saw some cup mutes, though I hope there's plunger mutes this time. That's one thing Skyfall lacked, IMO.

I wonder how much of the album it's going to be, the whole thing (doubt it) or a few tracks....I remember Michael Giacchino debuting like 4/5 tracks, including a suite that wasn't on the album, from Star Trek Into Darkness on radio.

Hmmm.

Backfire

- I miss woodwinds (though granted with the extremely lossy/compressed audio it's hard to judge)

- Like the psytrance passage

- Choir? We haven't had that since Die Another Day. Hope it's not a bad omen.

- Newman really likes Locian mode doesn't he?

- The bowed Appalachian dulcimer back!

- Lots of truck driver modulations

- Skyfall quote feels lazy.

- Bass flute Bond theme!

Donna Lucia:

- The initial phrase is same Major/Minor thing as in Severine, except in E rather than F.

- They share recurring intervals - 6ths and 9ths

- The consequent passage is more interesting. A, C/G, F#7, and the D (with #4 appoggiatura) to F# cadential figure. More tonally elusive than Barry in general. Is the F# (V/V) a dominant substitute? Questions, questions.

As long as Hans Zimmer doesn't get anywhere near the Bond franchise, I'm not bothered.

Why?

In my opinion he'll most likely try and do something "quirky" or "original" with it and it'll sound awful (I hated Man of Steel and TASM2). It'll just be his generic action material, string ostinatos and thumping bass.

Not to mention "Additional music by Geoff Zanelli, Lorne Balfe, Rupert Gregson-Williams, Pharrell Williams, Junkie XL, Nick Glennie-Smith, Phil from Accounting.. etc etc"
