Many of those shorter works recordings are band arrangements and not the original version.

I believe that of the longer works, the Tuba Concerto is indeed the most recorded, and there are at least two other comercial recordings of that one not listed on your post.

Escapades, concerto for alto saxophone & orchestra - 5 known recordings

Maybe I'm the only one, but I've never considered this a concert work per se. More like an adaptation of CATCH ME IF YOU CAN.

1996 Summon the Heroes (John Williams/Boston Pops)

2000 Waterloo (Capt. R. Wayne Hopla/The King's Division Waterloo Band)

2002 American Journey (John Williams/Boston Pops)

America, The Dream Goes on - 6 known recordings

1990 America, the Dream Goes on (Andrew Lane/Orlando Pops)

1997 John Williams, the Dream Goes on (Andrew Lane/Orlando Pops)

The entries I bolded are the same exact recording... why duplicate them just because they were released on more than on one CD?

1996 Summon the Heroes (John Williams/Boston Pops)

2002 American Journey (John Williams/Boston Pops)

This is the exact same recording. American Journey had a bunch of repeats on it.

For me it's a true concert work with three distinct movements and each has his name. It's indeed an adaptation of the score, but meant to be played in concerts.

  • I. Closing In
  • II. Reflections
  • III. Joy Ride

Thanks Miguel, I corrected the main post and combined those entries in the wiki disco.

I don't find any others on prestoclassical.co.uk, what are your sources?

That's fine. I know that many people count adaptations of this kind as "proper" concert works (like, say, Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kijé suite). Personally, I see it as a separate thing altogether -- an extension of the score -- and instead require complete originality when I list concert works.

Finally, you have your own conception of 'Concert works', your own conception of a 'Discography', that's a lot of concepts! ;)

The list in the first post has been updated.

Olympic Fanfare is now in third position!

Here is the current Top 3 :

1. Liberty Fanfare

2. Summon the Heroes

3. Olympic Fanfare and Theme

"Sound the Bells" is pushing hard, it has now entered the race!

It's not scientific, it's only according to the infos I've collected on my pages (and I discover new things everyday), but... it gives an idea!

Though some of those recordings are arrangements for band, right?

Indeed, when you see a piece recorded by a Wind ensemble, you can expect there is no strings in the arrangement! ;-)

I'm currently working on another update, new albums that I found on prestoclassical, but it may not change the ranking a lot.

My point is that those recordings aren't of the actual work but rather of an arrangement done by someone else either than the composer. Granted, many of those arrangements are quite faithful to the original, and in some cases, done with the approval of Williams himself... I just don't place them side by side on my own private arrangement of the discography of Williams compositions. I actually think I have much more recordings of Liberty Fanfare, Olympic Fanfare and Summon the Heroes in their band incarnation than the actual orchestral one as written by Williams.

1. Liberty Fanfare

One of my favorite recordings is by the US Marine Band from the mid-80s.  Although it is a truncated arrangement, only playing the first 2 minutes of the piece.  But still they may have been one of the first ensembles to record it actually:

For Liberty Fanfare, this entry:

"2011 United States Air Force Tactical Air Command Band: We The People (Welsh, United States Air Force Tactical Air Command Band/Graham)"

Change the date to 1987.

Also, for the 2011 Air Force Band and Singing Sergeants album "Last Full Measure," change the date to 1989.

For this entry:

"2008 Ceremonial Music (United States Air Force Heritage Of America Band)"

Technically this album was "Ceremonial Music 2" and if you want to leave it there that's OK, but it was only 0:25" of fanfare snippets from the whole thing.

For Summon the Heroes, this entry:

"2011 United States Air Force Band of Mid-America: Heroes, Lost and Fallen (United States Air Force Band of Mid-America, Shades of Blue Jazz Ens./Pohl)"

Remove that bit about the Shades of Blue Jazz Ensemble. That wasn't a jazz band album.

For Escapades, add this entry:

2011 Our Musical Legacy, USAF Band of the Golden West, conductors Bland/Martin

That's always hard for me when I add those entries to know if it's the original releases or reissues!

Thanks!

Yeah the military band recordings get some weird reissues from the Altissimo label, we've tried to mitigate the nonsense but it's still an ordeal. That's the reason an album released in 1987 can have a release date of 2011 on some lists.

For what it's worth though, we almost never have reissues. The only examples or cases I can think of is some of the ceremonial music releases and those really aren't intended for anything other than other military units to use for ceremonies.

In fact, i have created two playlists on Spotify for the concert works.

The first one containing the all the latest recordings (no doubles):

John Williams - The Concert Works

Then, a second one called "Best of the concert works", it contains some versions that are not on the previous list (again, no double).

Enjoy!

Did you know you can sort the table in the Wikipedia article to get quickly the most recent re-recordings of concert works?

Gotta be honest, I'm not really interested in the recordings where JW himself wasn't personally involved.

Maybe I'll take a listen to them online if that's possible, but I'll never buy them.
