A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) - 2015 3CD set from La-La Land Records

Under a minute maybe? Unless there are any unheard alternates we don't know about

I wonder which Spielberg/Williams collaborations Mr. Williams and Mr. Spielberg themselves would be most interested in having Mike Matessino oversee for them?

Shame so many of them lie with Universal, since they tried to do Jurassic Park themselves and botched it....

E.T. is pretty much complete, if you stitch what we have on the 1982 album, the 1996 laserdisc isolated music and the 2002 re-release (and for bonus, the "wrong" takes from the 1996 CD can be used as alternates).

It just needs a better presentation. Not sure how much of the sound can be improved significantly.

Jaws, CE3K, and ET all fall into the "pretty much everything is out there, but it all needs to be packaged together in one set with perfect and consistent sound" category. Just because we already have all the bits and pieces doesn't mean a proper specialty label release wouldn't be very welcome!

Then there's Jurassic Park, which we have in great sound, but its missing 3 minutes and needs a chronological assembly + physical release.

Then there's Schindler's List, Minority Report, War of the Worlds, and Crystal Skull which we have the recording session leaks for, but we'd all buy a legal release GLADLY.

Then there's the original Indiana Jones trilogy which came close to getting great versions, but there's so much music still missing, the out of tune transfers, the non-chronological order and lack of alternates....

Basically this leaves Always, The Lost World, Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal, Munich, Tintin, War Horse, and Lincoln as the Spielberg/Williams collaborations where nothing has ever gotten out beyond the OST CDs. (Well, the last 3 had more music released via FYC promotional discs).

Count me in! :)

I even bought and "audiophile" vinyl edition of E.T., which I can't play because I don't have a record player anymore... so yes, I'd definitely pay some big bucks for a proper presentation of E.T.

I wonder if any other Spielberg/Williams collaborations are long enough to warrant 3 CDs....

Possibly E.T. depending whats out there in alternate cues.

A.I. seems to be a rare exception in this regard. Not even Hook got a 3 CD release and that one had a lot of music.

Spielberg's best!

Oh please!

Always a shame when someone can't accept differing viewpoints without snide remarks!

I have no trouble with accepting different viewpoints. But I do have trouble with swallowing bullshit!

Hmm true, a truly definitive Hook would probably need 3 CDs to include every last alternate - and hopefully the original song demos!

CE3K is still missing some cues, but it would be great to resurrect it, and complete this time, since the expanded Arista CD is OOP

Here's my personal top 10 list of most desired Spielberg/Williams/Matessino collabs:

1. The Lost World: Jurassic Park

2. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

3. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

4. Jurassic Park

5. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

6. Jaws

7. CE3K

8. The Terminal

9. Raiders of the Lost Ark

10. The Adventures of Tintin

I weighed them by how much I love the score, how much is unreleased and unleaked, and the sound quality of existing releases.

So, you prefer Terminal instead of War Horse?

I thought the latter was a much loved score here...

For me, a new CE3K release MUST include the "Inside the Mothership" sequence...

Isn't that in a suite I think?

The tracklist for the new AI set (with times) is now available exclusively on the main page of JWFan!

http://www.jwfan.com/?p=7718

Additionally, I had a little Q&A with Mike Matessino about the new set. You can read that on the main page as well!

http://www.jwfan.com/?p=7726

It should answer any questions about what's on the set, and how it came to be.

If anyone has any further questions about the set after checking out both articles, let me know!

Great interview Jay! Really pumped for this release.

War Horse is a better score than The Terminal, but The Terminal has more (interesting) unreleased music. We got the best missing War Horse music on the FYC CD. Plus, the OST is already (basically) in order and is a very fine program containing all the highlights.

Yes, it was first released on this Philips album, recorded by the Boston Pops:

Then re-released on these:

among others probably

But there is still some debate on whether or not its the original film recording or a re-recording to this day!

Jay, I didn't know about this Pops in Space release... is it vinyl only?

I assume this photoshop edit was done exclusively for this release, or was this used as part of the publicity posters back then?

I still don't know what constitutes the 'A.I. Theme'...though i'm happy about all the alternates. Alternates of actual themes are usually more engaging the slightly different mixes of film cues. I just hope Matessino could improve on Murphy's mixes.

I never saw that image of David and Joe before

I still don't know what constitutes the 'A.I. Theme'...

You can hear "A.I. Theme (Vocal Version)" on the original soundtrack release from 2:28-end of "The Search for the Blue Fairy"

David and Joe?

You mean David and Monica? ;)

10. The Adventures of Tintin

Doesn't that one have a whole bunch of alternates, including an alternate main title. If so, that would make it one of my more desired releases.

Great interview btw!

I figured as much, but why A.I. Theme? It really only turns up for this very scene and the one after it. So FOR ALWAYS may have been a later addition? More and more questions..we soon will know.

Because it's a theme from A.I. not Indiana Jones ;)

The Blue Fairy Theme appears on TEN tracks on the new set!

Williams used it throughout the score in 5 different film cues, some of which had multiple versions written, plus his two concert arrangement recordings ["A.I. Theme (Instrumental Version" and "A.I. Theme (Vocal Version)"].

The 5 film cues are:

1. Journey to Rouge City (LLL D1T19 or Oscar Promo D1T16) - It's introduced in this cue, meant to underscore Joe and David's discussion before they head to Rouge City when David tells Joe he needs to find the Blue Fairy. Unused in the film.

2. To Manhattan (LLL D1T21 or Oscar Promo D1T17) - Played on piano here, meant to underscore David and Joe's discussion after they talk to Dr. Know. Also unused in the film.

3. Finding The Blue Fairy (LLL D1T3, D3T9, or D3T10 depending on which version you like, or Oscar Promo D1T7) - long development of the theme for David's journey underwater as he finds the blue fairy.

4. The Specialist Visits (LLLD2T8 or Oscar Promo D2T18) - More long developments as David and the Supermecha have their talk

5. The Reunion (LLLD2T9 or D3T12 depending on which version you like, or Oscar Promo D1T11) - One last fleeting version before he goes and sees Monica

It's a very lovely theme!

The tracks on the new CD called "A.I. Theme" are the development of the Blue Fairy Theme we've had for 14 years inside "The Search For The Blue Fairy". Just because the LLL track is called "A.I. Theme" does not mean that Williams considered it to be the main theme from the score, or anything. It's just a name. Clearly Monica's Theme is the theme he considers the main theme, being the one he has performed in concerts, the one he used for his end credits cue ("Where Dreams Are Born"), and what both versions of "For Always" is based on. There could be some contractual reason why the LLL tracks have to be called that - maybe that's what he jotted on the top of his sketch when he wrote it, or the name that was used in the recording logs on that day, or the name it was copyrighted under. Or maybe "Blue Fairy Theme" was just a track name that no one liked. Who knows!

It probably would have made more sense if they called the tracks "The Blue Fairy (Instrumental Concert Arrangement)" and "The Blue Fairy (Vocal Concert Arrangement"), but as I postulated, perhaps they were contractually obliged to use the name it was copyrighted under, or whatever.

well, seeing the trailer that was posted previously using that theme too, I was more convinced that it may be considered the main theme! :)

But i would say, strictly musically speaking, it sounds as a secondary theme.

I mean if I heard that and Monica's theme once, without knowing anything more of the score or film, I would say Monica's theme is the main A.I. theme.

My bet for the next LLL Matessino-produced Spielberg/Williams title is indeed CE3K. It's a score very much beloved by both JW and Spielberg and I can see them supporting a definitive archival release of that.

Agreed, and LLL has worked with Sony before

So Disc 1 complete score, Disc 2 original LP + alternates + Inside The Mothership cue?

Beyond that, Minority Report still seems likely to me.

Why? Universal has shown little interesting in licensing out any "big" property to the specialty labels. Jaws 1 and 2 would be huge news if they happen. Jaws 3 and Jaws 4 hardly count. 1941 seems like a fluke.

They did Jurassic Park themselves and didn't even let a specialty label do a physical CD of it.

To be honest, the 1998 Arista CD is almost perfect for me: it's about 98% complete, chronological, great presentation, awesome sound quality (70's recording with 90's restoration technique, and still sound like a modern recording to me). Just throw in the "Inside the Mothership" cue and you have me!

Or maybe I'm thinking little of it...

Track 18 Trucking is actually an alternate of Track 4 Roy's First Encounter. Such an odd thing to include, and to place where they placed it.

And it's probably closer to 90% complete.

Though of course, all the highlights are there and the sound quality is great - no question!

It says it wasn't used in the film... well, it doesn't ruin the listening anyway.

I'd say that what's missing is the "Cotopaxi" sequence, "Inside the Mothership" and the film version of the end credits (it's on the 1977 album). Right?

There are also the unreleased source music-like statements of the 5 note hello theme throughout the film.
