This is the most a celebrity's death has hit since Roger Ebert's.I think this is the first serious one for me. I can't really think of any previous ones, even recent like Nimoy and Lee, that were as crushing. Because usually, they're timely and easy to accept. This is just weird. And such a waste. A. A. Ricard 2,245
My first and worst composer death was Kamen'sNot my first one but certainly the worst for me at the time. But as much as I loved Kamen, this one's even more shocking. So many great moments and deep emotions in the last 33 years, since I discovered Horner's music through Star Trek II. I remember thinking of him as "the next John Williams" while listening to Krull, Brainstorm or Gorky Park.He was so young when he became a film music sensation. He was so young when he died. Popular Post KK 3,307
I don't know how much or what to write really, but it only seems fitting to say something about all of this...You know, when the greats like Goldsmith passed on, I honestly was not aware of their existence as I was not a big film music fan at the time. When it was Barry's time, it was easier to accept given his age, condition and relative retirement from writing music at the time. But this...this one really hurts. Of all the celebrity deaths, this one might be the most painful so far. I can't claim to have known him, but I knew the wonderful melodies he penned. They helped shape my childhood, from The Land Before Time, An American Tail, Cocoon, Casper, Jumanji....and much of my passage into adulthood as well. This man was prolific, and continued to write into our hearts to this very day. The man just finished 2014 with 2 concert works and had 5 new film scores set to feature films to be released this year. And despite my occasional reservations about his work, there was always a certain comfort knowing that amidst all that is going on in modern film music, that Horner was still writing scores with such a reliable sound to turn to. Despite all their familiarity, playing the latest Horner score in some ways was still like revisiting an old friend or burying myself in the warmest of cushions and blankets after a long hard day. Who would have thought that he would have met his end before many of his older peers, and by such unfortunate circumstances? It just seems like such a tragic waste. Like a cruel cosmic joke. Perhaps it is, given that his last score was for a documentary entitled "Living in the Age of Airplanes". I know these things are bound to happen, but I just never thought I'd have to say goodbye so soon. May you rest in piece old friend.
