Popular Post Thor 7,463
Saw the film this morning. Loved it! It's rather light compared to ROGUE ONE and LAST JEDI; very much in the spirit of FORCE AWAKENS, which is a plus for me. Edenreich nails Harrison Ford brilliantly! However, it has a very industrial, tangential feel for much of the story. The following is not really a spoiler, the way I've phrased it, but put it in spoiler nonetheless: Spoiler Towards the end of the film, there's an appearance of a character that you will be VERY surprised to see, given the STAR WARS story so far! Several more things I'd like to say, but I'd like to let it "sit" a bit before I construct the arguments. I absolutely ADORED the score. It was pretty much as I expected -- Powell's DRAGON action style (especially the percussive action bits, and the way the orchestra weaves around that) but with plenty of Williams trademarks -- the brass triplets, string flourishes, a glorious FUGUE, a swelling romantic theme. This is everything that ROGUE ONE was not in terms of music. I'm not sure I heard what Williams' Solo theme was, but if it is what I think it was, it wasn't particularly striking. Very much in his contemporary style, with a few notes jotted casually around the same line. No longlined, developped theme as we're used to from the old days. A cross between Leia and Rey's theme, perhaps. But since I'm not sure I'm talking about the correct theme, I'll wait untill I've heard it on album. The Force theme is absent, from what I could hear, but that may be because there's very little in terms of Jedi and mythological stuff here -- it's more of a straightforward action movie that happens to take place in the STAR WARS universe. Other old themes do appear -- the main theme, Imperial March, "Here They Come!" and other bits and pieces. 1977, Pieter Boelen, Jacck and 3 others 3

mstrox 6,643
The shot was still directed by Howard - Lucas gave the actor and Ron Howard a character bit and they ran with it. Spoiler http://variety.com/2018/film/features/solo-a-star-wars-story-directors-reshoots-ron-howard-1202817841/ The hand of George Lucas, too, happens to be present in the film, in a romantically charged scene between Ehrenreich and Clarke staged in Lando’s cape closet. There was a beat when Han takes Qi’ra’s cloak, hangs it up and moves on to his next bit of business. But Lucas had a note, if he could be so bold. “He said, ‘You know, Han wouldn’t bother to hang it up,’” Howard says. “And then he sort of did it. George became Han Solo for a second. The body language was there and the attitude. Not only was it a nice accent on the scene, but it was also a reminder that George created this character and really understood him. He was so reluctant [to offer his opinion], and yet the choice was so right that it was fun to use it.” (Neither Lucas nor Ford was made available for comment.) EhTar 63
The movie was released today in France. I just saw it. I won't say anything else. NO SPOILER here. About the music, the movie is mixed so loud on the sound effects that it's hard, very hard, to hear the music, except for few scenes. For example, scenes where the love theme, very Korngoldian, can be heard -- and the opening scene, with the probable first exposition of what John Williams wrote for "The Adventures of Han". I can't wait to be able to listen to the CD. I was waiting for more reprises from the material Williams wrote over the years but there are just smart quotes, at the right moments (I can't say more now). I would say it's a more modern SW score, but still in the codes of the saga, musicaly speaking. John Powell has done a superb job, tipping his hat to Williams' work, bringing his own signature in terrific ways (of the Force). And yes, the movie is good! Apparent for the moronic filmmakers involved, both those fired and hired, the audiences may be too stupid to notice. Rogue One was pretty awful as well.
