Star Wars IX The Rise of Skywalker (JJ Abrams 2019) - NO SPOILERS ALLOWED

It'll be the rise of the metaphorical 'Skywalker' like that little force-sensitive kid from the casino planet.

I agree. It'll be a New Order of Jedi called Skywalkers or something. A bit like the ending of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

It closes the chapter on Johnson's TLJ ending and ties it into the rest of the series.

Exclusive excerpt from the last page of the shooting script:

REY  MOTHMA

There are future Skywalkers all over the galaxy.

Future heroes, future legends. They are the best

hope for the galaxy now, and we will show them

the ways of the Force.

We cut to a wide shot of Rey/Finn/Poe celebrating with Force Ghosts of Luke, Han, Leia, Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, Yoda, Tol Braga, Peazar Hutt, Gorgonn Zola, Excretus Eruptus, Pissin Mowth and Yarael Poof looking on, smiling. Two setting suns glower on the horizon. The music builds to a surprising crescendo. It's the BINARY SUNSET cue, unheard since the very first film.

I really, really wish they had dropped the whole idea of Episode IX being the “last episode,” first of all because there’s no way in hell it will actually be the last, and second because Star Wars is at its best when it’s unpretentious. I think JJ did a great job with TFA with a zippy adventure with a lot of heart that hit all the right notes, but with this one “having” to “tie together” the whole “saga,” I fear it will be a grandiose mess.

To be truthful, I'd be surprised if the "wrapping up the whole saga" is anything more than a rhetoric, or a layer of veneer imposed upon the film's actual story.

As it is, if Abrams were to really go for it, I have little doubt that the film would crumble under the weight of this nearly-impossible task.

Nevertheless, I do want it to be the final chapter. Let Disney have their spinoffs and bugger off.

When the movie will inevitably fail as a wrap up of the whole saga, watch the apologists turn around and say "it's just a movie".

It has never been impossible. The problem is that appointments for writing are not open competitions the same way the one for Battlefront's composer was, for example. Instead of getting whoever real top men (and women) are, they got a friend's friend, a DC blockbuster writer Chris Terio. I wonder whether it has something to do with those plans of getting Abrams to direct future DCEU movies.

It will be “just a movie.” So was Ep. VIII, which is why I’m surprised by how divisive it was.

Not really. It's just a bit of geek culture fluff that has no tangible effect or meaning in the real world.

Just like Godzilla!

It's Gojira, you moron!

It's funny Audrey still says it wrong in a weird anglicised way, since the actual Japanese way of pronouncing ゴジラ sounds phonetically closer to "Godzilla" than "Gojira".

Here is my prediction of 23 TROS scenes based on footage, merch, and interviews I have found.

Spoiler

                                                                                                           Act 1

1. Pasaana (desert planet) - Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewie and C3PO land the Millenium Falcon on Pasaana and are looking for something or someone.

1a Pasaana - a moment will be spent on showing that Rey fixed Anakin's lightsaber. // Kylo Ren will have a scene showing how he fixes his mask.

2. Pasaana - The heroes find a sprawling desert settlement/civilization

3. Pasaana - They meet Jannah, a rebel archer.

4. Pasaana - Jannah assists the heroes while they are doing something with C3PO (red eyes)

5. Unknown - Kylo Ren and Sith troopers meet General Pryde and the Knights of Ren.

6. Pasaana - Finn, Poe and C3PO are fleeing on a skiff of some sort from First Order troopers. Rey is with them up to some point and has the gun she got from Han back.

7. Pasaana - Rey and BB-8 are fleeing on another (red) skiff from the First Order troopers

8. Pasaana - Rey is deep in the desert, alone, waiting for the starfighter, then jumps over it.

9. Pasaana - The Knights of Ren will be present in the desert. Whether at the same time or later than the heroes, is not certain.

10. Endor - Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewie, C3PO and the droids arrive on Endor and see the ruins of the Death Star II

Here the heroes probably split.

11. Endor -  Rey fights Kylo Ren on the ruins of the Death Star

12. Endor(?) - Finn and Jannah are riding warthog mounts.

...

                                                                                                            Act 2

13. Unknown - Finn, Poe and C3PO rendezvous with Lando, who is now a cool elderly gentleman with a cane and a cape. Lando will pilot with Chewie here or later.

14. Jungle planet - Lando, Finn, Poe, Chewie and C3PO land the Falcon there. Rey either arrives with them, or meets them there.

15. Jungle planet - Rey has some emotional moment with Leia

16. Jungle planet - Rey trains in the forest (saber toss etc.)

17. Unknown - Rey has a vision (or whatever) of becoming Evil

18. Unknown planet - looks unclear in the shots that we have, but it is the place where Zori Bliss, an old "friend" of Poe's will be found. There will be some exploration of Poe's past.

19. Unknown - Finn and Jannah see a fleet of Star Destroyers hovering or slowly creeping in the darkness.

...

                                                                                                             Act 3

20. Unknown planet - Kylo Ren lands on what looks like snow in the darkness (or sand)

21. Unknown planet - Kylo Ren and his First Order troopers battle the Knights of Ren in the forest while a fleet of Star Destroyers bombards it with red lasers. It seems to be the same planet as above.

22. Zori Bliss will join the rebels and pilot a Y-Wing, possibly privately owned by her. She will be fighting the new Tie-Dagger starfighters at some point.

23. Unknown - Small rebel force (Millenium Falcon, a CR90 corvette (like Leia's ship) and various rebel starfighters engage the enemy in a space/air battle.

...

                                                                                                           The End

Scene-unspecific predictions areL

I. After an initial alliance, Hux and Pryde will work together with the Knights of Ren against Kylo and his followers.

II. The slug-like alien named Klaud will likely provide some information to the heroes and be a comic relief.

III. Snap Wexley, a pudgy rebel pilot from TFA, will be one of this episode's <colour> leaders and will also have some interactions while on the ground with other characters. He will pilot a green A-wing, so I assume he will be the Green Leader, like the A-wing guy in ROTJ.

IV.  the new droid, D-0, companion to BB-8, might belong to Zori, Jannah, or Lando.

V. There is going to be a lot of planets and quite a few alien characters.

Disney will go for the ROTJ DVD / KOTCS green later on as the TROS colours. Now everything is still blue, like ROTJ posters were, but LEGO is already dark green.

So far Abrams, Williams, and the actors have a higher opinion of this movie than of the previous ones.

The ending twist / scene / shots are supposedly emotional.

As for McDiarmid, Hamill, Matt Smith and Dominic Monaghan(just a cameo?), nothing on the horizon for now.

So is Kelly Tran only going to cameo in this movie? Sort of like Jar-Jar in the later Prequels?

the story that Johnson wanted to tell for Finn's development into an actual believer in the Resistance cause

I really feel TFA already told that story quite well, and it is unsatisfying to see him backslide at the beginning of TLJ.

At the beginning of TROS, I bet that Finn & Rose will either be fully in a relationship together or in a place where it just didn't work out.

The kiss doesn’t seem consensual to me, so, I don’t see that going anywhere.

TFA set up Finn’s attraction to Rey, and I think it likely JJ will return to his original intention, here, if the pacing of the film allows for any romantic subplot at all!

I don’t really follow you. I thought it was a weak direction, but, YMMV.

Anyway, I keep bringing up TFA because I think it’s a better predictor of where TRoS is going, based on everything I’ve read (eg., Abrams saying that TLJ didn’t actually succeed in derailing his intentions; Williams saying he “hopes” TRoS reveals Rey’s parentage to be different than what was stated in TLJ, etc.).

It makes sense for her to have a less important role in the sequel now that her original narrative function is fulfilled.

The only question really left dangling is if her and Finn continue to develop a romantic relationship

The intention in the introduction of Rose strikes me as part of any sequel's obligation to introduce new characters into the main narrative. So putting her on the sidelines would be a sort of backing-off of the traejectory marked by Johnson.

Personally, I think she'll be more prominent in the film then marketing would suggest.

If you can even call it marketing, what Disney's released so far (which is virtually nothing).

My vain hope is that people would wait until the movie is in theaters before deciding that JJ threw everything out that RJ did in TLJ. There's no reason to think TLJ derailed any overarching plan for the trilogy, especially since we know there never existed any such plan.

I don’t think JJ Abrams is cowardly enough to back out from Johnson’s furthering of the story.

On the other hand, stuff that he’s teasing like the return of the emperor, a dark Rey and so forth, don’t reassure me.
