Cursed Child has been heavily criticised by people reading the script.

People whove seen the show have raved sbout about it and it's won a tonne of awards.

Were they just wowed by the production values?

The theatre-going crowd, and especially the theater critics do not necessarily overlap with the people who like Harry Potter. Those people could have judged it on its own, being ignorant of how it fits into the HP universe. The majority of fans could only read the book, and they are the ones who would be concerned with the botched characterizations, uninspired and unfitting storyline, massacred lore and overall insultingly lazy stuff like

Spoiler

Voldemort having a bloody kid

This bloke does a breathtakingly thorough breakdown of everything wrong with Cursed Child and suggests some good potential alternate rewrites the direction could have gone.

Hey, isn't that Capt. Magambo? What on earth is she doing in HP?

Awyway, I don't care about Colin Trevorrow one bit, but this news pretty much confirms what I think many of us already suspected...Disney is not going to allow any radically new ideas or original voices into this series, and if you want to direct a Star Wars film you pretty much have to colour between the lines and accept you're a TV director. They're not taking any chances with this franchise.

This is the Marvel template...and actually the George Lucas template.

It's so weird, though, because if anything Rian Johnson would seem like the most unique and independent voice and his movie has gone off without a hitch, production-wise.

Maybe they're bringing him back  to direct it?

I wouldn't mind if JJ returned. :P

That's what people are assuming, especially since production on Episode IX hasn't really started, but they need a new director soon.

Wasn't anything radical or new about Trevorrow. Anyway I don't want radical for Star Wars.  Not yet anyway.

anyhoo,  FUCK YES TREVORROW IS GONE!

Perhaps they'll go with Cuaron?  That might complicate the situation with Williams though, given the allegedly "exhausting" experience working on PoA (to be fair, it's probably safe to say that he won't be handed the wrong workprint to score this time)

Most likely to me is that Rian Johnson just directs both.  But Brad Bird would be so exciting.  I'd be down for Cuaron.  Honestly, Alan Smithee is preferable over Trevorrow.

I'd take Treveroow over Filoni or any of the other Clone Wars/Rebels hacks but that's about it.

Hiring Trevorrow was stronger evidence that Disney didn't want "original voices." Firing Trevorrow only confirms that they heard about "Book of Henry" and they're not completely stupid.

"Rian Johnson Drop Out of Star Wars Episode VIII"

All indications are that Johnson and Kennedy have a great relationship.  I think you either mesh with her or you don't, and no I don't think it has anything to do with being a lackey yes-man.  If you don't mesh with her, she is fucking ruthless.

I think you're probably right. Kennedy herself does not seem to be anybody who wants to stifle the creative process. And, just to clarify, my initial comment was just supposed to be a stupid throwaway joke. I'll edit it to be even stupider. One sec.

That's not weird, that just proves you're all talking out of your asses when you say Disney is opposed to originality. Are they going to give us Star Wars to its greatest potential? Of course not. Even if we could all agree on what that would even be, no studio would give us that.

But! Many of the people making these films are fans of the originals who want to see good movies themselves and who want to be proud of their work.

Surely Johnson is in the box seat. From all accounts, Kennedy and Disney adore what he's done with VIII and the entire production has gone off without a hitch. He's even wrapped post production 3 months out from release.

If not Johnson, Cuaron would be an inspired choice but perhaps too original for Disney's tastes.

I've said all along Disney should've gone after Matt Reeves for Episode IX. Batman seems like a complete mess at WB with Affleck causing dramas. Good opportunity to get in there and poach him.

This seems unlikely but could Kennedy convince Spielberg to come in and clean up this mess? He's seemingly available for 2018 now that Indy V has been delayed.

Not Cuaron. Good God, please not him!

For whatever bizarre reason, he managed to take my favourite Harry Potter book and change it into something virtually unrecognisable to me.
