I saw Star Wars threads as if I had already read them. An endless parade of riskless and cutty cutter, lens flares and no edge. Always the same narrow people, the same mindless chatter. I felt like I was standing at a great precipice, with no one to pull me back. No one who cared…or even noticed.

This post was quite a... voyage.

The irony is that the people who are tired of people complaining about the direction the franchise is going in, are the same people who were complaining for decades about the prequels, Special Editions, ewoks or what have you. The same arguments over and over and over again. Greedo shooting first, I don't like sand, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" etc.

Yes! Experimentation should be avoided! It os not in the best interest of the shareholders.

Are you a qualified financial advisor?  Should I move my entire retirement savings into Disney stock?

Are you sure about that Quint?

Actually, I assumed Stefan was referring to a chat we had on Messenger earlier TODAY and not something I apparently said 17 MONTHS AGO.

Not sure if it has been posted yet, but the film has officially been pushed back to December of 19.  Not a surprise if they still need to write the script.  Not sure if it is a good/bad/indifferent thing relative to Williams' schedule.

Thank goodness.  All 3 in December is much more symmetrical.

You know, I'm really getting saturated of reading posts about how Disney is making Star Wars riskless and cutty cutter, with no edge. And I might even agree to a certain extent. But it's always the same argument being thrown around. The same comments being made

There's also a big a part in you that disagrees with all the negativity and that loves Abrams/Disney Star wars to death. Cool! I think most people feel like you do but they are not as noisy as some of the regulars here. Right now, the Star Wars community is probably celebrating on the beat of Yub Nub.

And they will keep saying the same things as long as the problem remains.

What problem? Star Wars was never edgy and cutting edge.

The problem of Abrams recycling Star Wars a little too much. Give us a little but of originality (instead of carbon copies) or we fall asleep.

The problem of Abrams' inability to make you feel anything (his biggest shortcoming as a storyteller).

One of the two best choices that wouldnt derail the whole thing.

I am however ambivalent. We're going to get a nice and effective actor direction and casting (if needed more), and he directs fine some kind of stuff (like the Falcon chase in Force), but I didn't like how he handled other situations like Han's death or that final shot. More worrying is the script issue.

Don't remember that. And you have to ask yourself how much of these specialized FX shots is Abrams.

I have no idea. I know at times it's like a glorified administrator role where specialists who actually do things ask you for decisions constantly, so sometimes a sequence that really works might actually be accidental

I can remember specific instances of him achieving this, but they're like fleeting moments instead of a continued thing that builds up. I like it more the second way.

Bird and him lost Disney a lot of money. Probably not on their call list for Star Wars directors.

No surprise that both went crawling back to Pixar to make sequels to their most popular movies after making live-action mega bombs for Disney.

I wish those two did 2D animation outside Pixar.

Pixar is about CGI plus a lot of Animation Ghetto going on plus the idea of children films doesn't get a ton of different points of view there either. And the USA no longer produces 2D, traditional or otherwise, besides the TV shows (their best animated material is in TV, even with the different budgets and times)

But it's so hard. In Europe, even if it's for kids, you can barely get animation produced if it's a degree different from a mold. They could barely manage to finish The Secret of Kells (it was a hard sell because it had medieval monks writing a book and apparently that's a problem or something). Although I'm happy that neither that nor the follow up film felt the need to be specifically comedies for kids, but doing something else instead.

Williams turns 88 seven weeks after Episode IX is released, so... it would be nice if he started scoring it at the end of next year, assuming JJ can wrap production by then.

The only thing on Williams' schedule after The Post is Indiana Jones 5, releasing July 2020 (when he will be 88 years old). It remains to be seen if that film will ever happen, though apparently the script is practically ready. With nothing else on Spielberg's schedule after March next year, I'm really surprised Indy 5 didn't take the Episode IX slot. I know it was recently pushed back from 2019 to 2020, but it feels like Spielberg could easily get the film done by May 2019 if he cleared his schedule.

Place your faith in the Japs to keep 2D animation alive!

Like a few others, my only interest in Star Wars at this point is Williams' music.  Once Williams is done with Star Wars, so am I.

I'm not quite that far gone.  I'd say my "vested" interest in Star Wars ends with Williams.  It'll just become like the MCU then for me.  I'll see them all and I'm sure they'll be diverting entertainments but won't get much real estate in my imagination.

Same. If Williams weren't doing the saga, then I'd be about as interested in them as the spinoffs. Mild curiosity.

If Indy happens and sticks with July 2020, I suppose it would essentially be the same situation as going from Force Awakens to BFG. He didn't seem to have a problem with it at 84....88, who knows.

I am a little worried he'll have to be replaced on one or the other. He obviously needs more time to do these things now. I do wonder what's going on with Spielberg from 2018-2020. Is that just gonna be all Indy time, or is he gonna try again with the Mortara movie somewhere in there? It would be just like Spielberg to make Indy at the same time as JJ does 9, and then push Mortara out for a December 2019 release on top of it. :sigh:

Mostly I just hope Abrams can get himself more organized than he was on TFA and Williams won't have to take up another whole year of scoring. Somehow I doubt it, though.

Production Pushed from February to June 2018?

Quote

Variety reported that Disney had already been looking to push production from February to June and that the release date would likely move even after how quickly the studio found a replacement director.

Well yes, it stands to reason with the writer and director both changing and the film's release being delayed 7 months, that principal photography would be pushed back as well.

That could well happen, and if it does, I really hope Williams is okay with a COS-type situation on one or multiple films. For example, I see no reason why for IJ5 he couldn't just write the themes and major set pieces and leave the rest to Ross. There's a wealth of old IJ material that Ross could adapt. Of course, I would prefer that JW do everything himself, but if that's not possible this is the next best thing. I so wish they'd done that on RPO.

We left the original trilogy for the most insecure trilogy and the one with the most frightening resolutions for which will surely be one of the safest and at the same time boring of the whole history of SW.

Great! (but isn't that exactly what I said?)

Sometimes people talk about Star Wars like it was a Tarkovsky saga before it was taken over by the evil Disney goons.

Please don't generalize the people who are disappointed with Disney Star Wars. Just the other day, I wrote that I would prefer the Duffer 'Stranger Things' Brothers (they love nostalgia too) over JJ Abrams so Star Wars might be more heartfelt and less telexed. Does that sound like I think of Star Wars as if it's a Tarkovsky saga?!

And please save your analysis on my tastes and your broad generalizations on who is interested in these movies.

How am I generalizing? I merely deducted from your previous post that you love Disney Star Wars and that you are not alone. Sure, maybe you don't like to celebrate on Yub Nub but that wasn't meant to be taken seriously.

Compared to TFA, the prequels are almost experimental movies.

Even though I don't think they are boring, they do suffer from a severe case of 'woodenness'. That's the one thing Abrams has solved.
