This was very hard. When I did my first rough top 10, there were 30 albums in it. Took a lot to dwindle it down to these 15.

1 - Star Trek TMP

2 - Hour of the Gun

3 - Bandolero!

4 - Night Crossing

5 - Caboblanco

6 - Patton

7 - First Knight

8 - The Boys from Brazil

9 - Rio Conchos

10 - The Wind and the Lion

Just outside my top 10:

The Edge

Explorers

The Great Train Robbery

The Shadow

Tora! Tora! Tora!

Question for you Jerry Goldsmith fans. How is the score to Psycho 2? Does it compare to Bernard Hermann's original?

It's as effective, and as good, in its own way. The main theme is lovely-yet-lonely, totally befitting the character of Norman Bates. The "slasher" music is good, also. It's not as original as "Psycho", but then, what is?

It's more listenable on album than Psycho 1.

True, dat!

I will say that, although I appreciate the original, "Psycho II" is preffered film of the two, if only to watch Denis Franz.

Okay, folks. Time to get back to it. You've had the length of an entire season and more to give this some thought. Those of you who haven't settled on your Top 10 Jerrys need to start doing some prioritizing. The list so far is interesting, but needs some more votes to settle things (particularly the end of the list, which has a lot of room for flux at this point).

For those of you who've already voted, you still have a chance to review your choices and decide whether your opinion has changed on anything. The floor's still open to both submission and revision.

#Note; I only listed scores from films I like.

STV is better than FC on record but the film is unwatchable.

Same goes for LEGEND

I would first need to know if we're talking score-in-the-movies or soundtrack albums. They would be quite different lists.

Because there are so many great scores on bad films, I only chose score in film

I think we can ignore all the top 10 not including "Chinatown".

Don't be so condescending, man, you only know like ten scores.

Check out my picks first, I give you a guarantee that you're gonna love them all, except The Reincarnation of Peter Proud, that is another kind of thing.

Yesterday I discovered the score from The Sand Pebbles, the original recording. I found it rich and various.... But a little bit dated regarding the sound. This morning I'm listening to the re-recording...

Ah I found this is a better way to taste all the exotism of this score. Purchased!

Oh shit, I didn't even know about the 1997 re-recording! Sadly they use the alternate Overture with the boring Love Theme. Tadlow's re-recording on their Blue Max release has a way more precise performance and recording and uses the original Overture with the Chinese Love Theme. But they only re-recorded a few tracks.

The re-recording of THE SAND PEBBLES is all I ever need. I tried the original recording once; didn't do much for me. As for THE BLUE MAX, I never really cared for that score in the first place, in any incarnation. Sold my old Sony(?) release from the 90s ages ago.

“Chinese Love Theme” >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> that other theme; Jerry knew it too which is why he picked the former to feature in his original Overture. :)

How has Patton not been mentioned yet? What is wrong with you people?!?!? I still have to put my list together, but come on people - Patton!!!

I just bought a used copy of the re-recording by the RSO, which seemed more "alive" than the original recording. Anyway, to start my collection, it will be more than sufficient!

Am I wrong if I say that "Soarin' over California" is a major and loved work of Goldsmith, and yet, it cannot be found on any CD compilation of him?

As far as I know, it only appears on "various artists" Disney compilations.

What's the problem?

Great movie and great (although not easily accessible) score.

The OST is s great starting point, but the C+C really opens this score up, and makes it breathe.

Brundle's right: it's not terribly accessible (there's a lot of Bartók, in it, especially HOT WATER), but it's definitely worth buying.

I also like the two source cues, by Ganymede.

What about this score (expanded in 2010 by FSM), I think I never saw this movie.

The score is Alien's little brother. The film is fun, too.

Any list that doesn't start with Star Trek the Motion Picture is shameful.

This is one of the few JG scores that rivals John's best.  Of course Jerry's scores all sound like a progression. But then so does John's
