I pre-ordered this just on the recommendation that it is a Miklós Rózsa epic. :)

I'd wager that there are at least 10 historic scores from his MGM years - among them the following - that are as brilliant, that is if you are open to his dramatic scoring. His themes, especially the broad romantics, are ace.

Well this is done the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra that has done a lot of quite faithful and great sounding Rózsa re-recordings in the past. The improved sonics over what I understand to be pretty aged elements of the original recording of course are an added incentive if you love the music and are not averse to new interpretations of it.

There is also the world premiere recording of the complete Battle of the Dam which runs for 14 minutes instead of 4½ like on the original score release and it seems some other pieces of this music have been previously unreleased.

As I said, I do not even know this score all that well and I ordered this without a second thought because it is a Rózsa epic done by this orchestra and producer.

I doubt we really need that much (14 minutes of Rózsa action...mmmh..) but they have included some gorgeous concert variations on the prime themes so alone therefore we need the Prometheus.

Yes, yes, and yes. For those who are stuck in the groove of contemporary scoring and have yet to visit the Golden Age of Hollywood music, from the late 30s through the mid-60s Rosza was just about the closest thing to post-'75 Williams you'll find during that era. (Korngold was another, of course, though he only did 18 films. And I'd say Victor Young had the sort of melodic sophistication we love in JW's music. But Rosza was, in my opinion, consistently the best during the time of biblical-scale epics.) Scores like El-Cid, Quo Vadis, Ben-Hur, King of Kings, and Ivanhoe were the Star Wars, Superman, and Jurassic Park (so to speak) of the 50s and early 60s.

Sodom and Gomorrah came right at the end of that period, and was the last work he did before a decline in the frequency of his output (he would do only four more scores over the next 10 years). I'm a little iffy on full-score rerecordings in general, but Nic Raine has shown a deft hand in the past and this is a classic score. I think I'm gonna hafta pick me up a copy.

The City of Prague Philharmonic, Nic Raine and James Fitzpatrick have done stellar job on the previous Rózsa projects (and a lot of the other complete score re-recordings as well) and they seem to strike a balance between faithful reproduction of the music as it was written for the film with tempi and style etc. and the more listening experience oriented considerations like adding a concert ending to a piece of music to make it more rounded piece of music. They serve the music with high fidelity but also try to serve it so it makes musical sense on album.

Just got my copy! Fast service Tadlow and Prometheus! :)

EDIT: Although the film sounds like a horrible mess this score is vintage Rózsa with great themes and powerful orchestrations. Oh those sweeping Rózsa loves themes. The new Answer to a Dream for Violin and Orchestra is a perfect way to round out the (2h 16 minute!) experience.

P.S. publicist there is a fun mention right up your alley in the liner notes with Frank K. DeWald mentioning how the composer himself would probably have presented a considerably truncated version of the Battle of the Dam on a soundtrack album but here it is presented naturally complete. ;)
