Interesting that the Resistance still uses the old Rebel Alliance logo while First Order uses a new logo rather than the Empire's logo.

One thing that strikes me is we haven't seen anything in outer space yet

in the latest trailer you can see a shuttle escorted by startours-like things arriving to a new kind of imperial star destroyer. dont panic :P

Overall, I'm liking the designs of everything I've seen. I especially dig that black caped Stormtrooper. It looks very McQuarrie-esque with the exact same cape Skeletor's soldiers wore in the Masters of the Universe movie. I haven't liked any of the 3,721 variations on Stormtroopers (or Clone Troopers) since the Original Trilogy.

Indeed, the record shows that George Lucas once held the rank of chairman, and that chairman Lucas was broken for taking matters into his own hands in defiance of the Original Trilogy! Do you deny being demoted for these charges?! Don't wait for the translation! Answer me now!

But how will this help Star Wars move forward?

Everything we have seen suggests they only want to pay homage to a trio of films thats now very old.

Yeah but that's what people want, including myself (from STAR WARS). It's no different to the recent spate of video game HD remasters where they spruce up the visuals with brand new textures and superior lighting engines while leaving the actual gameplay mechanics exactly the same as they always were. And the fans lap it up because everything feels the same but brand new.

So you want Star Wars to be nothing but a variation of what you have seen before? Another Death Star. Darth Vader ressurected, a new young man to be trained in the ways of the Force?

No not a carbon copy rip off like Return of the Jedi sort of was. But at the same time I'm not in a million years expecting them to reinvent the franchise wheel with STAR WARS. It's a bit silly to expect anything else Steef.

What's-her-face who was supposedly named Kira (thank God that didn't turn out to be true) looks to be a female Luke Skywalker type living in the desert thrust on an adventure and put through trials from which she will emerge a hero. You've got your robot sidekick, hotshot pilot, one black guy, a Darth Vader type leading an army of Stormtroopers, the Millennium Falcon and...uh, I guess the old cast is in this???

Well, maybe it will be nothing like those. I don't like his Star Trek films one bit, but he certainly took risks with the source material and reinvented the franchise. I mean, I'll give him that. He might not approach Star Wars (of which he is supposedly a fanboy) in exactly the same way. He might emulate the style of the original films, which the teasers and images we've seen sort of imply. Does that make sense?

Abrams is stylistically very different to Lucas and Kershner, his sensibilities are informed by trends in contemporary cinema and he's not what I'd call an 'old school' director by any stretch. His Star Wars will be different enough, which is ultimately what will make STAR WARS cool again.

Very true, Abrams did make Trek cool again with 09. Although I still feel that Into Darkness fell flat because most of it was a rip off from one of my favorite Trek films...but personally I think The Force Awakens will be pretty good.

STID fell flat because it was ultimately about...nothing. Like so many of these recent blockbuster movies.

I don't think anybody on STID (including JJ.A) really cared about the movie that much. The vibe of it is very "obligatory sequel-ish". There appears to be much more effort being put into SW:TFA.

The just regurgitated the same supervillain revenge bullshit we'd already seen and ripped off Wrath of Khan for the second time. Only this time, it was boring. Either the studio demanded they not take any risks after the success of the first one or everyone involved just had no idea how to handle Star Trek. Or both.

All the effort on TFA doesn't help if they don't have good stories and writers. Although i don't even have much interest in STAR WARS save for Williams' involvement, i would be more than happy if it turned out to be a good one. But somehow these big movies of late, even the more promising ones, just don't have that kind of good 'ole craftmanship anymore. Apart from the pyrotechnics.
