Turns out the same motif (prefaced with additional notes) appears twice more, in 3M07 Ochi and the Dagger and 5M05 Rey Sees Mother. Both are during instances where Rey picks up the Sith dagger.

Thanks for that supercut video, that was really awesome!  Showcases very nicely that Williams absolutely had a theme in mind for the dagger specifically.

 

BTW, if I'm not mistaken the motif also appears in the desert when the bad guys capture Chewie and take it from him

The complete score isn't available anywhere, as there's been no leaks of recording sessions or music that turned up in video games or anything like that.

 

The only clean music we have is the OST, the FYC, and the Blu Ray menu with Rey Trains.  All the music heard in the actual film itself has sound effects and/or dialogue over pretty much all of it.

The very end of the cue where Yoda and Luke first talk in the swamp is different in the actual film than any CD release of that cue, because the albums use the cue as he originally recorded it while the film inserts in a new ending recorded later

A friend pointed this out to me: the bit at 02:03 in Imperial Starfleet Deployed/City In The Clouds underneath Yoda's theme (focus on the strings) while Luke is Force-lifting stones and other objects, it reappears in Yoda And The Force at 00:04 when Luke is trying to Force-lift the X-Wing out of the swamp and again at 02:12 in the same track when Yoda starts Force-lifting the X-Wing successfully, it's probably just a common sound, but thought I would mention it. @Falstaft

That's a great catch! One of the many beautifully worked-out details that makes Yoda and the Force such a satisfying overall cue (and what makes a cut-and-paste job like "Destiny of a Jedi" in TROS less effective). I wouldn't call it motivic, per se, since it really is more of a generic melodic/orchestrational Mickey-Mousing trope, but it absolutely is associated with levitation in ESB.

 

And there is a specific intervallic quality to that texture in Yoda and the Force--of dissonant two-voice counterpoint, esp. seconds and ninths and esp. in melodic parallel--which is a fairly consistent and pretty unique aspect of ESB's incredibly rich sound world.

But maybe it's like with Tchaikovsky's 5h Symphony. Tchaikovsky didn't feel a personal connection to the 5th, so he shrugged at compliments that he got for it.

130 years later, In polls for Tchaikovsky fans, the 5th often wins over the 6th for the top spot, but to the world outside only the 6th seems to exist.

Just like the only Star Wars ever written was the '77 one.

Yes, they are separate. There is no gap in the film though, it segues from one cue to the next just like all of the album presentations.

JW is known for not being too attached to single works. However, given the fact that he always conducts the Imperial March in his concerts and that he often said that Yoda's Theme is one of his favourite themes, I guess we can say with a good level of certainty that he's quite proud of the work he did for this film.

I was today years old when I realized the motif from Into the Trap was used in Approaching the Death Star. Doh!

You could probably match it to the SE set, and use Jay's spreadsheet as a reference for where cues begin/end.

At that point you might as well just use the original which used all the special edition timestamps already

 

I made the conversion primarily because it's what Williams actually wrote and so it's more accurate from an analysis perspective when looking at usage of themes; I wasn't really primarily thinking about listening along

 

However, any sheet-accurate fan edit would work

I know the consensus is that RotJ is the weakest of the Star Wars OT Scores. But there are so many amazing cues in this movie. The scene where Leia/Boussh releases Han Solo from Carbonite, The Rebel Briefing scene, The Speeder Bike Chase to name but a few. To compare the first three scores is like asking which one of Mozart's last three Symphonies is best. 39, 40 or 41? Pointless really. RotJ is a marvellous score. With one of his most beautiful and underused themes for Luke & Leia. Even after 40 years of listening this music continues to reveal its secrets to us thanks to the intrepid sonic archaeologists here.

Well, isn't that like being the ugliest Hemsworth? For any other composer Jedi would be a crowning achievement. For Williams it comes at the end of Jaws / Star Wars / Superman / The Empire Strikes Back / Raiders of the Lost Ark / E.T. and then sprinkle in some "lesser" scores like The Fury and Dracula.

Huh you guys are right, SW placed higher than ROTJ in the 2003 poll and the 2013 poll, guess I was wrong

I mean, everyone has different opinions on these things. But ROTJ is easily my least favourite OT score.

 

It's a bit of a conundrum, because the dramatic stuff (everything with Vader/Luke/Palpatine) is fantastic – some of the best music in the whole trilogy – but the Ewok material irritates the hell out of me.

 

On the other hand, SW and ESB are insanely tight. Not a single wasted note, not a single cue that makes me reach for the skip button.

Basically this. Its a lovely score and quite a fitting conclusion, musically. But its also more episodic (there's a Jabba "episode" with its own music, and theres...the rest of the film, with its own music), and osciliates between the pathos-laden and the saccharine. I can't for the life of me see it being rated above the original Star Wars.

Jedi is my favorite OT score so it’s got my vote

Jedi has an advantage because of the sheer number of themes Williams had banked by that point.  Nearly every shot lends itself to referencing some incredible earworm he'd composed in the previous six years, and even accounting for motifs he callously abandoned to uncertain fates (Eternal rest grant unto Lando's Palace and the Droid Motif, O Lord).  Then there are solid new themes for Luke and Leia and the Emperor and Jabba. 

 

But given that quality floor, what's disappointing to me about Jedi is the reuse of "Here They Come!" at some key moments when we could have used something really culminating and unique, as well as the neglect of at least two of the three new themes.  It also might have been nice to see Vader's theme develop more gradually into a new phase.  It's basically ESB-o'clock for the whole movie until Thomas Newman comes in at the end to re-orchestrate it for Vader's death.

I don't think it's all that bad. But I agree with you. The quotations from earlier scores (obviously not Williams idea) just lessen the score that little bit. I'm neither here nor there in regards to the Ewok music but the original and re-done choral endings are pure dairy product. For what it's worth I would say 

 

ANH 10/10

TESB 9.5/10

RotJ  9/10

Jay I will consider this but first I am working an investigation at work that must have most of my attention. One this is resolved I would like to do this.
