Disco Stu 15,517 Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 Indeed! I am a Nolan pagan, but the cinema is richer for having him even if I don't actually like his movies most of the time.
leeallen01 2,345 Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 I'm trying to get interested for this. Nolan is great. My favourite film of his being The Prestige, but I don't think even Nolan will be able to match the technical and emotional artistry of the Atonement scene. A constantly moving, uncut 5 minute shot, wonderfully conveying the long wait of all the soldiers, flawlessly executed and hard-hitting. I doubt Nolan can reach those heights, but I hope he can.
Will 2,393 Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 I don't really "know" Nolan, but this films looks very, very intriguing (due to my immense fascination with history). Very haunting trailer. Oh, and didn't realize Rylance was in this! However, I'm not sure if I'll see it. It may be a little too gory for me.
crocodile 9,637 Posted December 15, 2016 Author Posted December 15, 2016 I like what I'm seeing. Karol
A24 5,123 Posted December 15, 2016 Posted December 15, 2016 So far I'm only impressed by the sharpness of the IQ. Other than that it's just a ordinary straightforward war movie.

mrbellamy 8,078 Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Nolan talks influence of silent film and Bresson on Dunkirk; Editor Lee Smith claims the film has "little dialogue" toothless 1
toothless 1,047 Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 The interview is worth reading if you can buy Premiere Magazine
Naïve Old Fart 12,904 Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Son of a gun! I thought that Premiere Magazine had folded.
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,262 Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Slowly building my anticipation for this.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,205 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 Little dialogue? A Nolan film?

KK 3,310 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 Which is why this genre is what he needs right now. Free of Nolan's temptation to get wrangled in plot machinations! This could be the Nolan film to restore the faith of the non-believers.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,205 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 But the teachings of Nolan are all about the Word! Do not speak Blasphemy my brother!
KK 3,310 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 Perhaps it is time to pass on new teachings. A new testament may be near for the Church!
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,205 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 Herecy! Thou have been infected by the Devil!

If my prediction is correct, and Nolan did make a movie that stretches Spielberg's Omaha Beach for the entirety of its running time, then it would explain why there is so little dialogue.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,205 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 Nolan will be the new Malick!
A24 5,123 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 Hmm, the soldiers are fighting on the beach. We see a lot of limbs flying around. But what does it really mean?
BloodBoal 8,538 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 That's why we need dialogue! Give us more dialogue, Christopher!

toothless 1,047 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 So, with this bit of informations, what are you all looking forward scorewise?
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,205 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 It will be loud. Zimmers last few scores for Nolan were loud!
BloodBoal 8,538 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 That's why they didn't bother putting much dialogue in the film. Most people couldn't hear half of what the characters said in Interstellar! toothless 1
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,205 Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 True! I had no idea what Rust Cohle was talking about half the time.
crocodile 9,637 Posted April 2, 2017 Author Posted April 2, 2017 While I'm not massively excited about Dunkirk (and that also having something to do with my general dislike of big historical epics and their usual lack of merit) what Our Lord Saviour says about his film in this interview sounds kind of encouraging, from the cinematic point of view anyway... and potentially even for his non-fans. Karol
crocodile 9,637 Posted April 2, 2017 Author Posted April 2, 2017 No, I just not a big believer when it comes to historical epics. I always find that fiction is more honest than factual films. These alwas end up lyiing in the end... one way or another. Karol

A24 5,123 Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Quote ... how fast it moves ... - Nolan Sigh ... Though the ADHD folks will love to hear it. No need for them to push the FF button.
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,262 Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Glad to hear that he feels he's moved more into purely visual territory. Excited!
KK 3,310 Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 As am I, or at least cautiously optimistic. 7 hours ago, crocodile said: No, I just not a big believer when it comes to historical epics. With auteur artists/directors, it always ends up being how the story is told.

Will 2,393 Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 I will almost certainly be seeing this, since it's PG-13 (not a big fan of gore) and I'm a history nut. Looks very intriguing.

Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,262 Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 Admired? We'll see. I'm interested in how much he seems to be aware of a need to move away from cumbersome dialogue, to go nearly silent. I'm hoping for a well executed, taught, somewhat stirring war thriller, which isn't something we have in abundance.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,205 Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 I'll believe a low-dialogue Nolan film when I see it! It would be great though if he has learned to tell a story visually rather than though exposition.
A24 5,123 Posted May 6, 2017 Posted May 6, 2017 Anyone else gets a Spielberg feeling when watching the trailer? We need to bring Ryan home ... Ryan? No, my name is Mark!
mrbellamy 8,078 Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 Dunkirk runs 107 minutes, Nolan's shortest since Following Hmm might be a good sign for a more tightly written screenplay than usual.
nightscape94 968 Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 The length of the film says nothing about its quality, so this information is interesting, but rather irrelevant.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,205 Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 Its very significant! Perhaps Nolan really is evolving.
