Then I went to bed and the CD arrived first thing next morning. I listened to it on my way to work, again not really identifying her theme. And while at work I started humming this one tune to myself, not being able to tell what it was exactly. But after my shift I played the CD again... and there it was... all over the score. Popular Post Chen G. 3,943
Its a long theme with several parts, yes. Many of Williams' longer themes (which are typically his main themes) have two or three distinctive parts in them: think about Luke's theme during the crawl: the A-phrase is very brassy but the B-phrase (after the Rebel Fanfare) is surprisingly lyrical. Across the Stars' A-Section is very romantic, but it than moves into the more angsty B-phrase and the even more portentous C-phrase/end-cap. Its not even a strictly a Williams' device, either. Think about the B-phrase of the Shire theme. Very different effect, right? greenturnedblue, Brundlefly and Bilbo

Cerebral Cortex 3,357
Part of me kinda hopes that that musical idea never gets referenced again. Luke's return to the big screen is a moment large enough to warrant its own unique musical identity, and confining that theme, as great as it is, exclusively to that moment kinda would make it all the more special. Williams like to write new thematic material for each film and base the overwhelming majority of the score on this new material. He also doesn't compose with sequels in mind, so I don't think that he wrote the Jedi Steps with the intention of making it the theme of the sequel. As it is, its just a one-time melody. Popular Post Seth 67
I seriously doubt that the Jedi Steps theme will reappear, but I do hope his approach to that cue informs his writing for the training scenes and the aspects of the plot dealing with Luke and the Force. I would love to hear his music in that area take a "mystical" approach, maybe with some of the same timbres and harmonic language as Seven Years in Tibet or Memoirs of a Geisha. I suspect Rian Johnson will have paced the film in a way that gives the music more room to breathe than J.J. Abrams did ( or I hope that's the case, at least), and I would really like to get one or two well-developed long-form action cues out of this collaboration. After hearing how much mileage he got out of the various components of Rey's theme in TFA I hope he was given the opportunity to push it in some new directions. Based on what has been revealed about the new locations, I am expecting some interesting source music for the casino planet and at least some response to the creatures living alongside Luke. I will also be curious to see how he approaches the walkers this time around. And I am really hoping for minimal choir. That sound is so specific to the prequels that I think it would feel out of place here for the most part. 4 minutes ago, Cerebral Cortex said: This, but I'd also like to get a little bit of a reprisal from Luke and Leia's theme at some point during the film. :^) This too. crumbs 14,301
Based on Rian's existing work, I'm expecting far more opportunities for the music to shine, as opposed to JJ's style (shorter scenes, tighter editing, less space for long-lined melodies and cues). Just watch Ozymandias if you have any doubts about Rian's style. There are extended portions of that episode where music and visuals are the only storytelling elements in effect, and multiple moments where sound effects carry the drama to great effect (Walt collapsing to the ground after that death is etched in my memory).
