No videos, unfortunately. https://www.facebook.com/derrick.davis.39/posts/10155354394025660 For those without Facebook, here is an abridged text of my post: Quote Costa Mesa California's Pacific Symphony at the Pacific Amphitheater was my destination for the viewing and performance. The venue features many concerts during the summer in its outdoors amphitheater, and Jurassic Park was part of its lineup. We waited as the sky finally gave in to darkness, with a sizeable crowd all around us, and the orchestra perched under the large screen straight ahead. In many ways, it felt like seeing it at a Drive-In again like the very first time I saw it, but with seats instead of cars all around me. It was kind of bizarre, and unique. When it finally began, I have to admit, it was quite strange at first. I have seen the film countless times since it came out, so everything about it is essentially carved into my brain at this point. Of course, this included the music. I am fairly certain the Pacific Symphony was a smaller orchestra than what John Williams had at his disposal for the film, so some creative liberties were at play with the limitations. It seemed like there were some instruments given a role for ones they didn't have or not enough of. There were also some omissions entirely from the live orchestra at least. For example, there was no choir, so the music element of the choir was still the one from the film itself. The Japanese flute, the shakuhachi, was also from the film given its rarity and limited use in the score. These aren't really negative critiques, but merely observations of what was done. It was all just strange to get used to, yet thrilling. There were so many performances of music that would never be at a normal concert, such as Mr. DNA's cartoon score and when Dennis steals the embryos. The orchestra really gave it their all in every cue. Unfortunately, the first half of the performance felt like there were some technical issues with the volume of the music. There were times where I could barely hear it, then times where I could hear it really well, when it should all be at the same volume. What I liked, however, was that they did at least have the volume of the film lowered when the music came on to hear the music better than it normally would have been. What I didn't like, unfortunately, was that sometimes they were omitted sound effects from random things, like a roar, making the scene feel off and strange. Not sure if those moments were selective on purpose or part of yet another error. Hence the nature of live events, I suppose. Bound to be glitches. The film actually does stop about halfway through, right after Nedry crashes his jeep on the hill, for an intermission. I had expected this (normal for these kind of events), but I had expected it to actually happen immediately after the T-Rex attack on the Ford Explorers. I felt the spot they chose was a little odd and sudden, but perhaps they had their reasons. What I REALLY didn't expect was that they briefly played a piece from The Lost World: Jurassic Park score to signal the intermission! When the intermission was over, they played another small piece from it again to signal the film was about to start back up. Hearing these two teases from that film's score was an unexpected highlight, making me wish for the unlikely event of it ever having a similiar full live performance. The second part was a marked improvement on the technical difficulties. For the most part, it seemed that the music was on a proper level where it could be heard pretty well; finally allowing the performance of the orchestra to shine much better. I was thrilled to hear the scenes like when the T-Rex chases the jeep, the climbing over the electrified fence, and other dramatic moments with the live music that I thought I would never hear performed outside of the film's recordings. But personally, the most impressive performance of all, and the most thrilling, was hearing them perform the film's climax "T-Rex Rescue And Finale", which included the film's edited/tracked heroic music of it saving the day that differs from the original film recording. The cue covers an impressive number of scenes with the raptors chasing after the characters all through the Visitor Center all the way til the very last moment that the T-Rex roars in victory in defeating them. It would have been an easy cue to have performed wrong, or overwhelmingly, but they managed to play it at just the right pace and spirit that honestly made my hairs stand on end as if I had heard it all for the first time. The film of course ends with the credits, which people began to (rudely) leave during despite the music still being performed. I guess they paid big money to only see the movie itself, and not really for the music? Well THAT certainly makes sense. Anyhow, it was good to finally hear the two major themes from the film played again (with the volume loud and proud), although they for some reason chose to play the concert version of the credits music that ends quicker with the "finale" statement of "T-Rex Rescue And Finale". While it was still good, it left the credits continuing without anymore music, when they could have just played the real end credits all the way through. A minor disappointment, only because I really did want to hear that version of it that never gets played live. Overall, it was quite an experience we both enjoyed. While the technical situation and other choices left room for improvement, it was definitely a satisfying one-of-a-kind experience that ranks high on my best theatrical viewings of the film. It not only gave one the chance to see something in a new way, but you'll also hear things in the sound mix you've never heard before, see people react to scenes as if (or possibly) for the first time, and have a new appreciation for just how special film music really is. They played part of 'Visitor in San Diego' at the intermission of the Jurassic Park concert, when the great percussion and frantic violins come in around 1:50. When Williams replaced his film version of the end credits with his public concert version, it was shorter the film version. In this YouTube except of the RAH performance of a JP-L2P concert, this concert version of the end credits ends at the 8:04 mark, but notice the credit-roll continuing. In later concerts, the film's end credits was altered--it had to be sped-up to match the duration of the replacement music cue. I've never liked JW's original intention. - Why oh why did SS have to cut out that section of the credits over the bird shot? Wrote this before discovering this thread; now edited my copy/paste, to focus on my main query: I had the pleasure of experiencing "Jurassic Park" with, I estimate, maybe 15,000 people at The Hollywood Bowl where the phenomenal crusader of film music David Newman conducted the LA Philharmonic playing John Williams' score live to picture Friday evening. It was terrific fun. I know, more recently, there have been many older live-to-picture shows – "The Wizard of Oz" (1939), "Casablanca" (1942), "Vertigo" (1958), "Psycho" (1960), "West Side Story" (1961), "Silent Running" (1973), "Jaws" (1975), "Close Encounters" (1977) and soon we will getting "Superman: The Movie" (1978).... So, how do they do that? Wikipedia says projection material is prepared with 'music suppressed,' but that sounds like hand-waving to me. In my experience, movies are not made that way. No one had any reason to make a music-free mix of their film, back in the day. What would be the point? And surely all the audio stems would have been long lost, resulting in most cases in mono magnetic or optical audio tracks, which would surely be impossible to pull apart. I was mainly curious how live-to-picture concerts prepped older movies for playback. Since posting here, a friend with technical insight illuminated me (see FSM link above); and it is not so easy. There is a lot of artful sound level control, and audio filtration voodoo where separations did not exist. It's way over my head, but there is considerable skill involved, not to mention legal theatrical rights clearances. I was honored to catch "Jurassic Park" in this presentation, and it was invigorating to experience this terrific movie, and wonderful score, performed with great verve for such a huge and appreciative crowd. If that was originally not intended to have music, it was a bad call but rectified in post. The edit during the finale is odd but I chalk it up to JP being one of the last unpolished overproduced films that Spielberg has made. It has lots of shaky cameras, unintended anomalies, gaffes and the like. More like a classic Spielberg film before everything became overly staged and calculated to the point of feeling soulless. He must have looked at that helicopter scene and thought, well fuck it, we gotta wrap this up quicker and oh well about the sun revealing a big scratch in the camera lens. It's good enough! I copy/paste here because it's definitely interesting stuff to share: Quote Raiders, Home Alone and Back to the Future all use sequel music for the Entr'acte, so that's become something of a tradition. It was originally proposed for Jaws, but I suggested using the concert version of "Out to Sea" instead, which lent itself perfectly to where the break was. To enlighten a bit about this process, generally speaking from the mid-1960s and onward there is a decent chance that separated dialogue, music and effects are retained by the studios, but each studio did and does things differently, so it varies. Prior to the '80s these are invariably mono, so that was the basis for what we call the "embedded" track for Close Encounters. For parts where there is no music, the final mix might be used, but having dialogue and sound effects separate is always helpful for the concerts because it allows for some flexibility in making sure the effects don't overpower the music and that the dialogue is audible in the variety of environments in which the concerts are performed. Each venue has to tech the tracks to their own acoustics. Into the '80s and beyond it became standard to retain the finished "dubbing units." So, for example, there are 35mm 4-track separated dialogue, music and sound effects mags for E.T. that were later repurposed for 5.1, so therefore Universal has 5.1 separations of each of the three stems. That's what exists on Jurassic Park, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, etc.... separate 5.1 stems of dialogue, sound effects and music. You just drop the music out and work with the other two stems to rebalance it for the needs of the concert, and, as I said, adjusted accordingly for each venue. It's certainly a challenge with older films when no separations exist. Often the live orchestra plays while the music from the movie is also audible, which can be awkward, but the films might be subtitled so that the level can be brought down, with perhaps carefully programmed boosts for important dialogue. There have also been occasions where a brand-new effects bed is created (I've done this myself a few times) and then bits of dialogue are "flown in." There is also some so-called "music removal" software that only has limited application, but it is used when needed. I checked the Jurassic Park multi-track to see if the choir was discrete on the recording, but it was not, so a synthesized choir was made which is not played embedded in the film, but is instead activated by the synth player performing with the orchestra. The decision to have live choir or not is based on how much choir is in the score and how important it is. There are financial and logistical considerations involved. It's required, for instance, to anyone who wants to book Home Alone and Close Encounters. On Jurassic I was able to extract the shakuhachi flute from the multi-track for the two cues in which it is used. It was turned into a synth cue which is played by one of the musicians. This avoids the need to bring in someone with the instrument. Other synth parts in the score were "re-voiced," particularly "Dennis Steals the Embryo," but there is actually synth all through the score, including throughout the cue when the brachiosaurus is first revealed. Having an intermission is not entirely just to "give the orchestra a break" for the heck of it; the musicians union stipulates that there must be a break at least once in 90 minutes. So the interval is carefully chosen not only for where it makes presentational sense but so that each half comes in under 90 minutes. If it goes over, then overtime rates are paid! Finally, I'll just say that evenings at the Bowl are fun, but these concerts are, in my opinion, better in proper concert halls where the orchestra is heard acoustically rather than amplified like it is at the Bowl, where it's essentially mixed to speakers along with the dialogue and sound effects. So it's sort of like just going to see the movie with alternate takes of the music mixed in. The orchestra sounded fantastic, so I am sure this will be brilliant (I am going to tomorrow evening's performance). Although I was not allowed to take any photos while the orchestra was actually playing, during a break I was able to take this photo showing the set-up of the orchestra. As you can see there is a huge percussion section and a synthesiser which was practising some of the shakuhachi bits. To get in, I made an educated guess as to what time the orchestra would be rehearsing, booked a cheap tour of the Royal Albert Hall to coincide and got lucky. Simples.
