All the action cues in ESB are great show pieces, all of them concert house quality. But have not much to do with what is happening on the screen. Modern Johnny is much better FILM composer than those days.

Yes.

Modern Johnny tends to be more Mickey Mousey, while older Johnny would play through the action. I prefer the later approach.

I would have preferred the modern approach of chaotic unthematic orchestrally dense xylophone-heavy action scoring.

Or the Hans Zimmer technique of repetitive cello ostinatos and synthesized drum rhythms with the occasional Inception noise.

But honestly, I just love The Battle in the Snow, it just doesn't have anything to do with the action going on there...:eh:

How so? It doesn't accentuate the sync points as much as later action cues, but I wouldn't say it's got nothing to do with the action.

So the later here is the older approach?;)

I think it's just John Williams working in a different mode. For me the Hoth Battle music fits the scene in the way the declamatory piano and brass describe the AT-ATs and this slow march towards the Rebel Base. It's less frenetic than JW's modern action music but I prefer the clear musical identity of the piece.

Sorry, it do not change my opinion about the scoring of the ESB, most of it is brilliant with the film, and many show pieces(I love them all) but if you want see a more

perfect match with the music and the film you must watch CE3K. The best marriage of film and music. Ever.
