Now THAT is idiotic. ;)

Meh. I was less interested in Fisher being the only person to play Leia than I was that the character should get a proper ending. Whatever you think of JJ I can't imagine that it wouldn't have been a better film if they weren't weaving around the heart of the story not being there.

I think you mean "I think they should have recast Princess Leia, in The Rise Of Skywalker"

If you want to take half measures, sure. ;) (Yes, yes, you're right of course.)

It's hard for me to imagine the next Bond picking up any of the Craig continuity, that version of Bond is so closely tied with Daniel Craig that it's just hard to imagine. Plus they've sort of painted Bond into a corner at this point. It's hard to see where that Bond goes from here, which is why I thought they might kill him off. Or at least retire him to some island somewhere.

Whatever they do with the next one, I hope we don't get another origin story. I don't need to see how Bond got his 007 status. Give me a Bond who's already an experienced and ruthless operative and I'll be happy.

Agree that the "codename" theory is idiotic.

Spoiler

Thing is, apparently Bond begins NTTD as an 'island retiree' already ... he and Madeline are domestically blissful in Jamaica, but the threat that Safin poses is grave enough that he's 'pulled back in'. In his absence, Lashana Lynch's agent has been given the '007' number ... now, I'd say that NTTD MUST end with Bond getting 007 back and returning to active service.

Er, pretty sure he's never died (unless you're counting his faked death in YOLT and the 'missing presumed dead' in Skyfall).

Oh, and the brief bit of audience wrong-footing at the start of FRWL.

Fer cryin' out loud?!

How many times has Bond died, left, resigned, or just given up on, MI6?

Honestly, it's getting old.

The movies would kill him at the beginning of the story. The books would kill him at the end. Most permanently at the end of From Russia With Love.

Going from memory: Left Universal Exports at the end of Casino Royale, comes back when Vesper kills herself. Killed at the end of From Russia With Love. Dr. No: Only mostly dead but gets his Walther. Leaves at the end of On Her Majesty's Secret Service, comes back... Well, you know. Leaves the 00 division at the beginning of You Only Live Twice (becomes 777?), presumed killed at the end but actually has amnesia and heads to the Soviet Union. Man with the Golden Gun: comes back brainwashed and tries to kill M, sent on a suicide mission. At this point Fleming doesn't survive.

They didn't "fake" anything. Officially, Bond was dead. We see M writing his obituary.

Huh. Well then who was it that drove M up to Scotland?

The same fellow that was in The Man with the Golden Gun after M wrote the same obituary in You Only Live Twice.

Oh, I see. The writers "fake" killed him. But the characters genuinely believed he was dead. It wasn't any kind of scheme. (Like in the film of YOLT.)

No Time to Die will run for 163 minutes (!), making it the longest Bond movie ever made:

Actually, of all the Craig Bond movies, only Quantum of Solace doesn't run for over 140 minutes.

According to Wiki, QUANTUM OF SOLACE is a tight 106 minutes, which makes it the shortest Bond film, ever.

In other words, Craig is responsible for both the shortest and the longest Bond movies ever made.

Spoiler

Based on everything shown in the trailers, Bond and Madeline are in Italy and he shuttles her off after her apparent 'betrayal'. Bond appears to be in Jamaica alone.

Aww, you can hear him get emotional at the end.

Good to see ... there was so much crap about his 'Right now, I'd rather slit my wrists than play Bond again' comment in that interview the day after SPECTRE wrapped. Seems people ignored the 'Right now' bit and the likelihood that the guy was probably fucking exhausted ... Bond's a more physically demanding part than it used to be, since Dalton there's now an expectation that a large chunk of the stuntwork will visibly involve the lead.

Daniel Craig: ‘Why Should a Woman Play Bond?’ Create Other Female Roles ‘Just as Good’

“There should simply be better parts for women and actors of color," Craig said.

He's right. For what it's worth, I'd prefer him to stay Caucasian too. There's no harm in some things remaining just as they are IMO, but i'll leave it there lest I incur 'political post' wrath.

Cary Fukunaga Says Sean Connery’s Bond Is ‘Basically’ a Rapist: ‘That Wouldn’t Fly Today’

With "No Time to Die," Fukunaga tried to make the Bond franchise more progressive by changing the world around 007.

Drax would be pissed off if he was still a JWFanner.

Ahhh "The women in this Bond film will be different, this is really a step forward." Singing that song in Bond films since 1964. And hey, it's even been true in many cases. But they always act like they are the first.

Fiona Volpe, a different woman: takes a bullet in the back

Domino, a different woman: gets porked by Bond, underwater

Kizzy Suzuki, a different woman: dies by poisoning

Tracey, a different woman: takes a bullet in the bonce

Tiffany Case, a different woman: gets caught with a cassette stuffed down her bikini bottom

Solitaire, a different woman: is "a complete woman" after being porked by Bond

Mary Goodnight, a different woman: spends half the film in a multicoloured bikini

Maj. Amasova, a different woman: does publicity photos in a red Speedo (don't believe me? Google it!)

Whoever Lois Chiles played, a different woman: gets porked by Bond in zero gravity

Octopussy, a different woman: turns after being porked by Bond

Oh, yeah; they're different, all right!

In fact Dr. No is the shortest Bond movie.

Ahhh yes, but we now have Lashana Lynch as fellow agent and Bond equal Nomi who has actually been given the 007 number as it was available after his retirement. Seems James Bond isn't allowed to be an 'unchallenged' alpha male in his own franchise any more *eye-roll* .

Uh, I know we don't like it at all, but Die Another Day already attempted a similar thing prior. YMMV on if it's even a good idea, but there's still enough to precedence to where you can't just say it's been done purely to appease modern standards or whatever you think allegedly influences movies now.

(Both milestone movies too, I'm just noticing.)

Female agent allies have been a every-so-often thing in the series since the Moore era. But for the most part they have belonged to different intelligence agencies than MI6 and have at some point needed Bond to rescue them (even Jinx), classic 'damsel in distress' stylee.

Something tells me we're more likely to see Nomi rescuing Bond than the other way round.

Holly Goodhead's name was an invention of MR's scriptwriter but I like to think he was taking his lead from Fleming himself, with the likes of Honey Ryder and Pussy Galore being straight out of the novels.

The 'last gasp' was in Casino Royale '06 I guess, with Bond winding Vesper up by telling her that the codename she'd been assigned was Stephanie Broadchest.

Stabilizing nicely, 90% fresh after 42 reviews.

Great news! Happy to see Craig go out on a high after that slog Spectre... but please bring back Martin Campbell and David Arnold to launch the next Bond!

Yeah, bring back the oldies to start the new!

Give it to Justin Hurwitz, would love to hear more from him. Or don't, this franchise has been surpassed by Mission Impossible anyway.

From The Guardian's review -

'Craig’s final film as the diva of British intelligence is an epic barnstormer, with the script from Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, with Phoebe Waller-Bridge delivering pathos, action, drama, camp comedy (Bond will call M “darling” in moments of tetchiness), heartbreak, macabre horror, and outrageously silly old-fashioned action in a movie which calls to mind the world of Dr No on his island.'

Sounds like pretty much everything you'd want from a Bond movie, and indeed from movies in general.
