karelm 2,903
Very sad 😞 I was at the rehearsals of Dear Basketball and he was so excited and a huge fan of JW giving him a hug and telling the orchestra how thrilling an experience it was for him to stand in front of such great musicians. He let everyone who wanted take a selfie but it was clear he was giddy with joy at the experience. I think he said it was his first time in front of an orchestra. RIP. Here he is at the Star Wars session with the trumpet section. He was a big time JW fan. Will, Fancyarcher, rpvee and 8 others 1

Popular Post crumbs 14,301
Tragic news. I don't follow much basketball but Kobe was clearly elite in his field and revered by so many around the world. That he and JW shared such a special collaboration is something we can all cherish, as I'm sure John is right now. He must be absolutely devastated. rpvee, The Five Tones and Will

Popular Post Dr. Know 326
John Williams has made a statement. Quoted in the New York Times: Williams said in a statement Sunday that Bryant’s death was “a terrible and immeasurable loss.” “During my friendship with Kobe, he was always seeking to define and understand inspiration even while modestly, and almost unknowably, he was an inspiration to countless millions,” Williams said. “His enormous potential contribution to unity, understanding and social justice must now be mourned with him.” https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/26/arts/kobe-bryant-oscar-award.html?smid=tw-nytimesarts&smtyp=cur The Illustrious Jerry, Pawel P., Tiburon and 12 others 9 5

Kobe's lament (from 3:10) about skilled artistry being lost in the rush to churn out product over art resonates heavily with me. Clearly John and Glen epitomized prowess in their respective fields for him. Heartbreaking that someone so influential and passionate on these topics has been lost, because we could really use more voices like his. Doubtless he had so much left to offer, as did his daughter and other souls onboard. I struggled to finish another viewing of Dear Basketball after hearing this news. John's music transcended the beautiful animation and touched upon something very special. Sadly the short film (with the traditional music & animation Kobe wanted to celebrate and enshrine) now holds a newfound context he never intended. Tydirium 1,166
Great statement. But seeing Williams say "social justice": (Nah, I know he's a grandfatherly almost-88-year-old, but that phrase just evokes such a visceral reaction in me these days, what with how it has been weaponized/what it has been used to refer to.) Well-meaning things are always twisted out of context. Some use the term "social justice" to address real inequities. Others to bring down institutions, even people, deemed "oppressive." Similarly, some people honestly believe in self-determination and merit based structures. Others use these principles as whitewash to gloss over their prejudices. But all that really need not be dwelt on too much right now except to note that Bryant, like John, was a dedicated man, passionate about the talents he had been given and the things he believed deeply in, certainly in recent years, and that should be admired. Arpy 4,145
Was reminiscing about this score and came across this insipid review on Rotten Tomatoes: Quote The John Williams score is a bit too, well, John Williams, but Dear Basketball is made with deep feeling, and it really shows; you don’t have to know a thing about basketball to find it touching. It’s currently the bookies’ favourite to take home the Oscar. 'The John Williams score is a bit too, well, John Williams'? What the fuck does that even mean? I think that's a great thing, you know, for the artist to sound like themselves. Jeez. Holko and SteveMc

mrbellamy 6,272
Power they’re probably not even seeking for the most part... I think plenty of us who hang out regularly on a John Williams forum are gonna be more prone to notice glib criticism against him or take it personally because we’ve internalized his musical voice, we have affection for his persona, we have memories associated with listening to the soundtracks at various times of our lives. So even the most off-handed jest about the “John Williams sound” can feel like an affront sometimes, I’ve felt that. Even from other JWFans! But like, anybody who says “the John Williams score is too John Williams” is probably not that invested in him one way or the other. They might even generally acknowledge he’s a legend or a genius but they just have less of a problem lightly mocking him or his music because they don’t give him a second thought. Like we all do with most artists and celebrities, including those we like. So idk, it’s chill yo. Cerebral Cortex and SteveMc

Popular Post Taikomochi 1,136
I’ve always found it obnoxious critics shitting on JW for doing what he does. Critique the films for being sentimental and warranting a sappy score, perhaps, but not the score itself. Like the fuck did you expect for a film like War Horse? Reznor and Ross ambient fart noises? Maybe films like that or Dear Basketball are too sappy, but they have the scores their tones warrant.
