Of course "sci-fi" is an extremely broad umbrella term which covers many subs, but as much as it may irk the pseudo purists of JWFan that such a bothersome all encompassing definition exists, they ultimately just have to suck it up and accept that they can't bend the meaning of established terminology to their will just because their vanity strives to create a contrived and vainglorious distinction between "truer" Nolan science fiction movies and "family" Steven Spielberg ones, as they see it. As much as it pains you people, "Science Fiction" covers it all. Sorry.

Btw, JP is a science fiction adventure movie.

Here's some more helpful tips:

Event Horizon is a science fiction horror movie.

Species is a science fiction thriller movie.

Starman is a science fiction romance movie.

Etc etc.

Lonnegan - who likes to use the term "Hard Sci-Fi" to describe more heavyweight fare such as 2001 A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner.

Well now, my posts have paid for themselves with this classic display of "Quintus v. all the pretentious posters he needs to put in their place!"

Game of Thrones source material is found in the Scifi sections in the book stores. So is Ender's Game, so is A Wrinkle in Time. Scifi is broad.

Do those bookstores have distinct fantasy sections?

Or do they lump all science fiction and fantasy together into a "shit that hasn't happen and can't happen now but maybe it could somewhere somehow and it'd be really neat but that isn't important because there's a larger story about the human condition buried beneath the mumbo jumbo we use so we don't offend real people because we're making most of the shit up anyways" section?

They give Science Fiction and Fantasy the same consideration as self help books or stuff like Who moved my Cheese. Talking about B&N. But you can only micromanage sub genres so far before it becomes unweilding.  Manga is in a subsection of scifi too.

In book stores science fiction and fantasy are grouped together as speculative fiction because they share a similar audience. Speculative fiction is anything that takes place in an 'unknowable world' (future, alternate history, other planets, before recorded history etc.)

Science fiction follows the laws of our universe while fantasy follows its own established laws. The difference between fantasy and science fantasy is down to aesthetics  (time travel with a wooden talisman vs. time travel with a metal machine and buttons)

Star Wars is science fantasy because the force goes against the laws of our universe.

Sourced from science fiction writer Orson Scott Card.

Star Wars used to be Fantasy but the Prequels are sci-fi due to one little new fact. Do you know what I'm referring to?

Everybody does.

But again, genre definitions are too volatile anyway. There's stuff in Dune which is not exactly scientific and much more mystic in nature (although the two things are not necessarily incompatible). But that's one of the hardest novels to pin to a single genre

All the Star Trek scores except Giacchino, all the Star Wars scores by Williams, E.T., Batman, Batman Returns, Close Encounters, Godzilla (1998), ID4, Minority Report, Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, King Kong (1976), Superman: The Movie, SpaceCamp, The Rocketeer and Twilight Zone: The Movie. I guess that about covers it.
