KK 3,307
The orchestra definitely flattens the material. All the aleatoric stuff and rhythms come off really mechanical. But there only seems to be two movements? Then it moves on to The Fly. Centring the first movement around the Smaug material, especially those pulsating chords is interesting, but the arrangement itself is so scatterbrained, that no moment really registered. In comparison, the little bit of Rohan in the end of the concert comes off much better. EDIT: The Mount Doom stuff that follows is kind of butchered too...so nvm. Plenty of fantastic little moments butchered and sequenced in strange ways. No, it's been stated that two of the movements were cut (from the broadcast or the concert, I do not know.) bollemanneke

Or did I just listen to the wrong part of the concert? It's optimized for listening.
bollemanneke 3,337
Oh, that's why I found it disappointing, only 2 out of 4.
TheUlyssesian 2,473
I recognized multiple themes but it seems like it is just bounding from one thing to another. I couldn't notice any discernible structure. The Tauriel material is well represented though, but that's hard to screw up. I think across the Hobbit trilogy, the material for Tauriel - both her theme and her love theme with Kiri are the most attractive and accessible material. mstrox
gkgyver 1,645
Is this rendition of Misty Mountains official or concert standard? Because it's great:
blondheim 1,157
I was at this Pittsburgh premiere and had no idea it was the first time it was being performed. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra sounded amazing that evening. The brass rips were downright nasty and I loved it.
Popular Post SUH 65
Still no recording of the full four movements then Looking for any information online, I found these old tweets: 8 years on, it seems a lot of stuff didn't come to fruition! I would still love for Shore to work on a two hour Hobbit Symphony. I feel the Hobbit would benefit more from such an arrangement than Lord of the Rings did, given the differences between each score in orchestra / studio / mix / orchestration. Perhaps he could even tie up some loose ends thematically, for leitmotifs that were dropped due to filmmaker decisions. A single cohesive Hobbit listening experience would be a blast! That being said, I've greatly enjoyed revisiting the OST albums recently. Given we only got 90 seconds of new Shore music for The Rings of Power after such anticipation, I'm more able to appreciate every second of music that we do have on those two disc releases. I used to find them frustrating to listen to, knowing how much terrific music and motivic storytelling was lost in the film versions, and having melodies like 'The Edge of the Wild' only appear once in a bonus track. But now I can see how great it is to have all that music released as canonical Shore Middle Earth music that will live on for years to come!
