The trailer music is still available for the rarities release ...

I certainly hope so! Can't wait for the new FSM ROTK CR Podcast, that will be awesome!

And where is "Into the West"?

Well, the addition "featuring Annie" in "Days Of The Ring (or King)" pretty much gives that away, doesn't it?

Yes, there are a few instances where the tracklist doesn't match the timeline of the movie, but as this release gives us Shore's music how it was conceived, not how it ended up in the film, this is hardly surprising.

Seems like a few scenes were switched around just before delivery date, and this is how it was recorded.

Good, give me Shore's original compositions, not the edit jobs presented in the movie!

Wow... This is going to be a truly fantastic release...

The Lord of the Rings scores by Shore are part of the best film music ever written, and the fact that we don't have to wait 20 years to hear the complete recordings is a fabulous gift.

Can't wait... :)

Agreed. Just thought it was a bit unusual not to sequence the entire thing in film order...but we really won't now what they've done until we hear the music. :)

In any event, this release completes the most superb modern soundtrack presentation released to date, of what is certainly one of the finest scores in motion picture history.

Howard Shore has created something only matched by William's SW score (OT) in scope and depth, and in many ways he has created a more unified, sweeping work. What makes listening to this music so heartbreaking is that he knew the entire story going into the FOTR score....an advantage Williams didnt have. So pieces of FOTR that are beautiful and hopeful when listened to in one sense, take on an entirely different meaning and tone when you consider the bitter sadness and suffering so many of thses characters, especially the Hobbits, will endure (and I'm thinking particularly of the Shire music here).

To my mind, heart and ears, only ANH and Empire come close, and in such different ways. While Williams was able to create many magnificent scores post Star Wars, I feel that Shore will always been remembered for LOTR, and will never come this close to greatness and perfection again. Williams, no doubt, is the superior composer by any reasonable definition, but Shore exceeded himself with this, and really did create something extraordinarily special.

The Lord of the Rings music, like the films, no longer belong to Peter Jackson, or Howard shore. With this release, they belong wholly to us, the fans now, and we are fortunate to be their caretakers.

I think the lawyers don't see it that way....

I happen to place Towers as the least of the Trilogy. It's not that I don't like it (I do a lot), it's just I get more enjoyment out of the other two. I feel the same way about the film.

Two Towers is a thick and melancholy experience. The finale music, though, is incredibly rousing. It's the perfect release. And in the trilogy as a whole, Helm's Deep is the climax - Return of the King is just the denouement.

Ugh. I use to like Return of the King best, but now it seems that Shore took a lighter and flightier approach (you know... a little like Williams) that did not quite do the film justice. It's still very good, though.

Sigh... Okay, Steef, I didn't mean anything absolute by it. Let's see. Some of the action cues in Return of the King sound a bit Williams-esque; quick key and meter changes, heroic flourishes, increased interpolation of themes (e.g. Sam storming Cirith Ungol Tower, there's a little Shire theme in there).

I think I've obscured my original point by answering your questions. My original implication was that fans of Williams might like Return of the King best, not that the score is a Williams ripoff or that Williams invented the musical signatures it relies upon.

boom-tzzz and some flute runs, if you mean modern Williams ... I know this will draw some angry lookses at me.

gkgyver - they learnt from including film edits after the one that crept into Khazad-dum.

Yeah, to me this edit remains a myth until I actually hear it.

ROTK rules

The others are just nice... ^_^

I agree with you 10000000%.

I think that at the time of the OST release, it was mentioned here that Shelob's lair was somewhat Williamesque in style.

That always sounded sort of like Prelude from Psycho to me, only better.

You're right(about getting the angry lookses at you). JW is much more varied than that, I think he's at his most creative point in his career, so much variety, almost all his scores are different now.

I haven't heard them, but aren't Shore's horror film scores the basis for "Shelob's Lair"?

Yeah, I think I read that somewhere too. I've never listened to any non-LotR Shore either so I don't know for sure.
