That they are. Let's hope some (controversy tag) more deserving (controversy tag) scores follow suite.

Burn him!!!!!!

More deserving, possibly. More known to the remote-controlled masses? Probably not.

I was a bit disappointed that we did not get to read Doug's book this year but I guess the new possibilities with the releases make up for another year of waiting. I am very happy that they are offering each of these new releases (the book, Rarities etc.) separately. I would have hated to buy same thing twice. And as the CRs are the heart of the whole thing and we already have those I have no trouble waiting for the new prospects of this project.

I agree completely. AND the following two paragraphs sound very promising:

So are you all preparing to place the defibrillator paddles on your wallet? Don't do it! The book's bottom line is untouched. It will cost exactly the same as it would have six months ago. There will still be a Standard Edition and a souped-up Deluxe Edition. These will both be book and DVD combos. Deluxe will be deluxe in presentation only. You know, special hardcover, autographs, hand numbered, etc. Expect more announcements on this in the near future.

We are also actively looking into a super-deluxe package that would include both the Deluxe Edition of the book and the Master Box. (This would be the actual book, not a 5 by 5 liner reduction or anything like that.) If you've got the cash and are dying to get your hands on the most luxurious presentation possible, I promise you, we'll make it worth your while! Oh, and we have a special guest working on the deluxe book packaging, so we may tie this in with the Master Box packaging if it seems appropriate.

They're sturdy little buggers. Because they're so fond of eating. Bilbo's back can take it.

Mayas? The LHC's got them beat.

I think as long as the LOTR Symphony is still being performed live, a DVD would be out of the question. I'd love to see the Symphony again.

There is however a DVD called "The Making of the LotR symphony" or something like that, I think I've got it together with the RotK Extended Collector's Edition (the one which also contained a miniature of Minas Tirith).

Oh great, something else to spend money on. :)

Will the book be available without the rarities disc? I'm honestly not that interested in more music, just the book.

Thanks. If it is written in a similar and easily digestible SW Anthology booklet style, I'll be getting it.

If you have the LotR Complete Recordings then you have a pretty good idea what this book is going to be like in style and content as Doug Adams is the author of both the liner note booklets, annotated score (the downloadable track-by-track analysis of the CRs) and this upcoming book. The book is a much more comprehensive than the booklets or the annotated scores and has much new material and comes to little over 200 pages all in all.

I'm curious as to how the rarities have been condensed into one CD (I suspect that there will be less than seventeen variants of the FOTR Prologue) :).

Apparently not.

If it's not a DVD then there can't be more than 80 mins. Shore must've written far more than that, dammit!

There was about 30 days of recorded material Mr. Adams sifted through for this project. That covers just about everything from choral sessions to the extended cut recording sessions I think. From what I have gathered on Doug Adams' blog, Mr. Shore and Mr. Adams have chosen the best and most interesting of the unreleased material for the Rarities to form an illustrative whole. I personally am quite happy with the most illuminating selection of material, not a huge jumble of takes, alternate takes with one instrument removed or added, inserts and snippets etc. just to get more music. I know there must be tons and tons of alternate material but is it all worth releasing on CD is another matter. We will have to see how this plays out.

Also Mr. Adams and Mr. Shore recorded video commentary/discussion on the music this spring for some purpose and Doug has not clarified yet is this going to be released. He gave us the impression that this was to be part of either the Rarities or the book. If it is released it must be on DVD.

I'm just looking forward to the extra music <img src="http://jwfan.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Ooo I didn't notice the extra musical cuts part. I'd love to hear that stuff.

Damn, why can't all composers be so thorough with their score releases.

Did Adams not state some time ago that there was going to be a 'standard' and 'deluxe' verison of the book? Perhaps the DVD with the interviews and commentaries will be what makes the difference.

As thrilled as I will be to have the most interesting alternates etc on the CD included, I am slightly concerned that the reason the book was pushed back another year was because it was decided that the Rarities Archive was to be presented as its own stand alone release while the multi-media materiel would come with the book.

I'm excited to get the book but also confused and concered that the project may have been cut back at the last minute.

I agree. We have had an incredible amount of LOTR music already. And really no right to expect any more.

To get even more music should be considered a treat, not a dissapointment.

If you look at that pic, taken from Adams' blog, you can clearly see "Audio CD" not DVD on that preview disc.

Doug Adams put a clarification on his blog for us on this CD/DVD speculation. So there is going to be one CD, with all significant rarities. The video material is not used and there is NOT going to be a DVD.

Check here for the longer more intricate explanation:

Only downside for those wanting only the music is that you have to buy the brilliant book discussing a significant trilogy of film scores. :P

Hmm, so they've basically gone back on their decision to make TRA and the book separate entities.

On one hand, you guys are right in that having this much music released is a revelation in the film score world. Hell would freeze over before some scores could dream of such treatment.

On the other hand, I'm really hoping that limiting everything (synth mockups, commentary, and real music) to only 80 minutes is giving it all enough time to breathe. I was hoping to get some unreleased theatrical bits (Sam climbing the tower and shieldmaiden sequence in particular) , but I'm guessing the set will concentrate on actual alternate approaches.

It's too much, if you ask me. The scores as presented in the CRs is plenty enough.

You wouldn't be saying that if this were Star Wars, I bet.

It should be more than enough. I hope it has Shore's rejected Rohan theme on there, though.

I had no idea he wrote an actual rejected theme. I got the impression he just came up with some ideas and PJ turned them down one by one until he got there.

I'm not sure how far he got with it, but I remember PJ discussing it on the Two Towers EE extra features, so maybe he did a mockup.

You're right. And you'll automatically take that as blind Williams "fanboysim" I bet.

Truthfully I'm somewhat thankful that it is only one disc, and no I wouldn't want more if it was Star Wars.

If they have chosen (as the example in doug's blog seems to imply) the alternate that contain all or the most variations then its fine for me, that is what i was expecting.

I never expected several takes of one cue with only a smal different segment.

I'd be interested if it has the Gondor theme from the last half of the Pelennor battle. But otherwise I agree, we have more than enough music from the LoTR films, in excellent quality!

There are some portions of the theatrical releases that still need releasing. One thing about the EEs is the way the music is changed in some scenes, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.

I'd love to hear this alternate stuff, particularly if it has differently orchestrated versions of the Rohirrim Charge and the Last March of the Ents etc. Sometimes I prefer early unused orchestrations of cues to the finished product.

I don't think there's THAT much unreleased music from the theatrical versions... possibly most of the highlights will easily fit into one CD.

We've got that, along with several other alternates, in the BFME game demo. It's just that it's noticeably compressed mp3 quality.

I wouldn't put too much hope in getting loads of theatrical alternates unfortunately. That 80 mins has to contain the commentaries, synth mockups, alternate/unused approaches.

Although, if you devoted say 10 minutes to theatrical alternates, that's actually enough to contain quite a bit of stuff if they only include track segments (i.e. like the segments in the BFME file). The two I ripped from the game are 43 seconds each, and we don't need any more than that.

So the book is coming out in the beginning of October, right?

Yes the book which includes the Rarities Archive CD will be released around the time of the Radio City Music Hall performance of FotR in the beginning of October (October 9th and 10th to be exact).
