Disco Stu 14,067
Today I listened to Williams' concert arrangements of Sugarland Express and The Reivers (the 19 minute one with narration), two of my favorite of his scores! It reminded me that I often love soundtracks that have a "Southern" flavor (as in the southeastern United States). Does anybody have any especial favorites film scores with an essential Southern-ness?
Thor 5,273
Williams did several of those in addition to the ones you mention. Don't forget CONRACK, THE MISSOURI BREAKS, ROSEWOOD, THE RIVER, TOM SAWYER, THE MAN WHO LOVED CAT DANCING and bits and pieces of his TV work. I don't count stuff like THE COWBOYS, THE RARE BREED, THE PLAINSMAN, WAGON TRAIN etc., as they are more straightforward "westerns", nor the lofty Americana of LINCOLN, JFK, BOTT4OJ, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN etc. A "Southern" score I've appreciated in recent years is BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD. Two of my favourite scores in this genre are Lalo Schifrin's Cool Hand Luke (perhaps the quintessential Southern film score - check out the music for the egg eating contest) and Charles Bernstein's terrific score for the Chuck Bronson melon farmer shoot-em-up Mr Majestyk. publicist
Romão 1,931
The Straight Story, by Badalamenti, probably my favorite work of his outside Twin Peaks Probably not technically southern in geographical terms, but the mood is definitely there Sharkissimo

Gnome in Plaid 213
The setting of the film is more Appalachian than Southern, but hell - Appalachia's more South than the South. Musically it might not be exactly what you're looking for, but it's as representative of small town America (including the South) as anything you'll find, and I'll never pass up an opportunity to proselytize for this score.
