Popular Post Incanus 5,713
I just came across this new CD by guitarist Meng Su, the winner of the 2016 Parkening International Guitar Competition, for which she has recorded both Avner's Theme from Munich and Williams' composition for the Guitar Competition (for Pablo Villegas), Rounds. Other composers represented on the disc are Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, J.S. Bach, F. Tarrega and William Walton. Quote MENG is the first solo CD featuring Meng Su, 1st prize winner of the Parkening International Guitar Competition, one of the leading guitar competitions in the world today, held every three years in Malibu, CA. The CD includes two works by composer John Williams, the beautiful and moving work “Avner’s Theme” which he composed for the feature film “Munich,” and which opens the CD. Other works are Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s “Sonata ‘Ommagio a Boccherini’ Op. 77”; the celebratory 4th Lute Suite by Bach; two little jewels by Tárrega; as well as the “Five Bagatelles” by English composer William Walton. The CD ends with the second work by John Williams, “Rounds,” which he composed for the Parkening International Guitar Competition in which Meng Su took the gold medal. Meng Su, who is captivating audiences around the world with her stunning virtuosity and refined artistry, began studying the guitar at the age of five in China, coming to the United States at the age of seventeen to study at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University on a full scholarship, in the studio of the renowned guitarist Maestro Manuel Barrueco, who is the executive producer on this recording. Thor 7,385
That's nice, but one would think -- given the prize is presumably named after the guitarist Christopher Parkening -- that the guy would play something from Williams' STEPMOM, on which Parkening actually played. TownerFan 4,983
Yes, the Parkening International Guitar Competition is indeed named after guitarist Christopher Parkening, who is now spending his life as a teacher and educator. Actually the piece "Rounds" that JW wrote for Pablo Villegas was indeed premiered by the Spanish guitarist at the Parkening competition in 2012. Miguel Andrade 1,252
Rounds isn't deducated to Villegas. The score comes with the following dedication "with great admiration for Christopher Parkening and the Parkening International Guitar Competition". As a former competition winner (2006), Villegas returned to premiere Rounds at the 2012 edition. At the premiere, Parkening explained something like that he had been asking Williams for a solo piece for ages, but Williams was always busy and somewhat insecure about writting for solo guitar. Eventually, one day Parkening recieved, to his surprise, the score in the mail.
Bryant Burnette 654
18 hours ago, Thor said: the guy Wrong. I think it's kind of cool for "Avner's Theme" to get some love. I think that's a great piece. As for "Rounds," I haven't quite been able to fall in love with it; but a lot of Williams' non-film work tends to improve for me every time I listen to it, so maybe that will happen with "Rounds" as well. Not sure I'll buy this disc, but I'm glad to know about it.
Miguel Andrade 1,252
I'll be getting this CD, though it will have to wait until is available from somewhere else... their shipping fees are just unbelievable high!
WilliamsStarShip2282 308
I know this is an old topic now, but out my old guitar and started to play through rounds and realized that the copyright on the music actually says 2006....
