Howard's Sketching Process

Mostly directed at those "in the know" - Doug and Jim Ware - any insight into this process? Presumably the bare bones sketches in two piano format as seen in Doug's book are the first pass. Where do they go from there? A more orchestrally detailed draft, then into full score, or with even more intervening steps, somewhat akin to Wagner's protracted method? Any discussion on this subject would be of interest.

Howard moves directly from these pencil sketches to fully orchestrated scores in ink. It's really a two-step process for him (unless you consider engraving a separate step). Part of that is the reality of a film schedule, part of that is just the rate at which he works.

Interesting, thanks Doug. I admire that efficient way of working. Does he apply the same method to his concert music, or is that a more expansive act?

What a joy it would be to pore over the pencil sketches and ink scores of the first trilogy!
