So crazy that Hauschka is an Oscar nominated composer now.  He's a super talented experimental pianist who I've listened to for over a decade now.  His 2008 solo album Ferndorf was incredible.

Watch him at work here:

If he starts shooting soon this year as initially reported he can probably make it. He knocked out Munich in less than 6 months between production and release. Dude's still a machine.

Btw I think this is only like the 7th time or something since his first nomination that JW got no Academy recognition in a year that he had at least one score...last time was 2008.

2?  I have my doubts about that smaller Spielberg movie (the Edgardo whatever whatever one) actually releasing this year.  Maybe I'm wrong.

Spielberg shoots next month and it reads like textbook Spielberg Oscar-bait. It'll be out by December, don't you worry!

Also, are Newman's nominations a running joke with the music wing? Passengers seems out of place among the other 4 scores, considering the film was a critical bomb.

Pleasantly surprised they didn't snub Gibson or Hacksaw Ridge and thoroughly un-surprised a film like La La Land got 14 nominations. :sarcasm: To quote the Plinkett lads, "Boy, does Hollywood love sucking itself off!"

I'm not on board with this.  Fuck him.  He deserved to be ostracized forever.

It's exactly what I expected, except for the Newman, who strangely seems to have taken Williams' usual standard courtesy nomination.

Moonlight is the only truly annoying, overrated score. Lion is just a knock-off of Johannsson's Prisoners, but pleasant I guess. The rest are decent to quite good.

Why?

People make mistakes. And he's certainly paid for his. He didn't actually do anything horribly wrong. Just said a load of BS.

Boy, do Hollywood love themselves!

They hit a new low this year forgoing the traditional press conference for a tacky nominations announcement format allowing for 30 extra minutes of extra back-patting and self-aggrandizement in between category announcements.

Both Williams and Newman are longtime regulars when it comes to "close, but no cigar" nominations.

If Newman never gets one you can be 100% sure they will give him an honorary one when he's about 75.

Yes!

Politically correct BS.

You want to give awards to rotten people, go ahead.

These things are not meritocracies, nominating people like that definitely makes a statement.  I ain't cool with that statement.

Meh. Don't judge the artist, judge the art. That's supposed to be the point behind these ceremonies, no?

That's the same kind of logic behind the ridiculous #OscarsSoWhite bs from last year.

Williams has had his rewards. The only real snub I'd argue for over the last decade is 2005's Memoirs. But he should be pleased with just racking up the usual pity/courtesy nominations.

Newman should have gotten his fair recognition in the 90s!

Jackie - Mica Levi > should probably win

La La Land - Justin Hurwitz > shoo!

Lion - Dustin O'Halloran and Hauschka > must listen

Moonlight - Nicholas Britell > must liste

Passengers - Thomas Newman > nice but hardly award-worthy

Everyone's entitled to their opinions.  In mine, saying things like "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world" makes him a rotten fucker.  It's totally my thing that I can never look past that he's a rotten, hateful person.

It's between that and Manchester, which I thought was incredible.  I hope Manchester wins.

I agree Manchester is beautiful. If there's an Oscar upset with "Best Picture", it'll go to Manchester, yes.

Your first sentence does not match the rest of your post.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, except the opinions that people disagree with.

He was piss drunk and looking for a fight anyway. Unsavory, but hardly a reason to banish him for all eternity.

Or rather obviously been suffering the bouts of alcoholism. The christian thing would be to offer forgiveness.

Like I said, I admit it's my thing (although I definitely believe that alcohol is a truth serum and your real opinions come out) and I honestly don't judge others if they still can like his movies.  I can look past negative aspects of other artists.  My wife and her family are Jewish, my children are being raised Jewish.  I just can't.  That anti-Semitic shit is insidious and seeing a resurgence these days.

If only he could be as pure as the rest of the sycophantic egomaniacs comprising Hollywood, behind that illusion of glitz and glamour.

Also, it's a mild contradiction saying everyone is entitled to their opinions, then labeling someone a rotten, hateful fucker for stating something you don't agree with.

Seeing Gibson next to Villeneuve in the Best Director nominees actually makes me think that as happy as I am Villeneuve is getting the Dune gig, I'd be most intrigued with Gibson handling the project

Very true! And we must be mindful of this growing anti-semitic hate. But if the camps reopen and we once again find stars stiched to our clothing, I doubt very much Mel Gibson will have had anything to do with it.

Again, I don't agree with him, but he's done nothing wrong that he hasn't been punished for.

I've made my position clear and I'm done talking about it.  Makes my emotions run high.

Ok I'm undone talking about it.  When prominent men like Gibson, especially men like him who are considered prime examples of masculinity, make statements like that it only emboldens the nasty men (and it's pretty much always men) who are prone to hateful conspiracy theories.
