Didn't know if a thread like this already exists.  If so, please feel free to bump and close.

Many of us seem to travel around quite frequently.

I just secured plane tickets and stay for four days in New Orleans in May.  First time there, can't wait!  I typically like to go to different types of cities, and not just sprawling metropolises.  I'm finally planning my first trip out of the country when I visit Japan next year.  Fingers crossed.

Been in Club Med Les Boucaniers in Martinique in january, and I will be in Club Med Turkoise at Turks and Caicos in may.... and in september again.

Last year I went to Club med Yucatan in Mexico.

I'm pretty much Club Med all the way now!

Went to Jordan (Petra & Wadi Rum) last month.

Going to Alaska in June.

Looking at spending a few days around NYC/DC next year.

I'll be in Chicago for a few days in 2 weeks-ish, and then Cleveland for a week or two in mid-April.

You have my condolences.

We're going on holiday in England's green and pleasant land this year. Oxford and Cornwall to be precise. Cornwall should be interesting, juicy dialect and all that.

Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Bruges first week of May.

Need to get my passport though. I called my local post office and they're booked for 2 months just to even submit an application. Who knew it would take so ridiculously long? Gotta start calling everywhere.

The Caribbean.

Apparently, all you have to do is go to Disneyland, board a boat inside a building and go down some waterfalls.

...then click you heels three times, and say "There's no place like home".

Watch out for the pirates. If it breaks down, at least they won't eat you

Everyone.  Literally everyone knows that.  Michelle must be stressed about this!

I had heard horror stories as well, but I submitted my application in February a few years ago and got my passport in the mail within 2 weeks.  My experience doesn't seem to be the norm, however.

Personally I'm a firm believer (has anyone ever met a soft believer?) that it is good policy to have a Passport, good to go, with a number of years left on it whether someone ordinarily travels overseas or not at all, because you never know how you may have to relocate very very suddenly for a whole multitude of possible reasons.

Posted

Over here you can apparently get a new passport in days if you're willing to pay for an expedited service.

I got mine renewed in 2012 and it took a couple of weeks. Our Post Office has a service where you pay them a small fee and they will check all the paperwork and send it off for you. Given some of the horror stories I've heard, mine was remarkably hassle free. Won't have to do that again for another 5 years.

Very dangerous to have that sort of 'isn't it obvious?' approach Jay.

I didn't know for example, that to get your first passport over here, you have to attend an interview. I was on my parents' passport to start with, so I didn't have to go through that. I only know it because a friend who has never been abroad was looking into it (we're trying to persuade her that she needs to escape from the UK).

If you haven't travelled abroad before (or not for a very long time), these things aren't obvious.

Hurling could take us anywhere. Cork next weekend and god knows where after that.

Hoping to visit a few War of Independce and Civil War sights in West Cork and Kerry during the summer on our way to Skellig Michael. Will probably do the ring of Kerry while we're there.

Hoping to go to Oxonmoot (in Oxford as you can probably guess) in September.

I was just in Tromsø (North of Norway) and Berlin in January and February. I have Cannes in May, then Abderdeen (the Highlands) in June, then Riga (and maybe Vienna) in September, maybe Ghent in October. I aim to book one or two more trips, but I don't think I'll be able to do a 'very long distance' trip this year. I tend to do those every other year.

I'm currently in the 'Orient', and was in The Philippines recently. Wonderful wonderful people. Visitors need to stay well clear of the Sulu Archipelago though, because of militancy there.

I enjoyed their food and drinks, too.

CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!!!!!!!

Posted

Strutting around with my White Privilege again, soaking in their volcanic hot springs, cavorting with their Women, trampling over their beaches, munching their seafood, obliging them to carry on using English, looking upon their sacred relics. Make The Philippines great again. Oust Tourists!!!

A little bit of everything I guess. We're planning on airbnb but are not sure if there are better options. We'll be staying for two nights.

We honeymooned in Iceland for a week.  It was awesome!  April is probably the right month to go, it rained every day when we were there in September, and in the middle of the summer its light out all the time

@publicist

Travelling to Berlin for a couple of days next month, so I wonder if you might be able to recommend anywhere in particular to go while I'm there. Also wondering what the nightlife is like.

The museums and galleries seem to be disappointingly not free; as their UK equivalents generally tend to be. 18 euros each to stroll around those sorts of places isn't very attractive!

I was in Berlin just a month and a half ago. When I was there last year (first time since the 90s), I was kinda disappointed, because it has no single city centre. But this year, I was more experienced. You have to go to particular areas to find nightlife and other activity -- and they're often a bit apart (use the public transport extensively!). For exampe, Kreuzberg is a nice place with loads of restaurants and pub. Also around Alexanderplatz.

But I'm sure we have locals here who could give better recommendations. Doesn't publicist live in Berlin?

Drop my a line if you wanna meet up for a drink

Will do. Found a nice airbnb near the city center. I'll be there from May 7th until the 9th.

Why are trains so expensive in Europe?!

Posted

Train rides are ridiculously expensive here. The train network is quite good, but the prices are insane. It's often cheaper to drive.

May should give you ample opportunity to find great out- and indoor activities. I recommend some stuff beyond the usual Brandenburg Gate, Television Tower and The Wall (you'll know bout that.)

What else is there that might make for a good day trip?

A tour in the Berlin underground (large parts of Berlin are tunneled): http://berliner-unterwelten.de/home.1.1.html

Free city tour, usually the guys doing them are really good and entertaining - and it's free! http://www.neweuropetours.eu/berlin/en/home

C/O Gallery: http://www.co-berlin.org/ and near Potsdamer Strasse/Kurfürstenstrasse you'll find virtually 100s of free (small) galleries

Largest adventure animal park in Europe: http://www.tierpark-berlin.de/en/tierpark-experience/animal-highlights

Documentation center covering all the splendour of the 3rd Reich, headquarters of the Secret State Police, the SS and the Reich Securityhttp://www.topographie.de/en/

The same for GDR's State Security: http://www.stiftung-hsh.de/homepage-2

Great parks: Tiergarten, Volkspark Friedrichshain, Treptower Park

Great unknown part of the city: Altstadt Köpenick

For good weather mandatory: take a canoo tour through New Venice, with hundreds of little canals connecting picturesque little homes near Müggelsee (that should be a good day tour).

As for nightlife: for more kinky and druggy sessions you of course should make either the sunday round at Berghain (electronic, enter every sunday from 8 in the morning in not-too-touristic clothing and stay till monday) or a friday/saturday night at KitKatClub (great parties, again, clothing should be 'relaxed') or if you're more into pub crawls go to Wiener Strasse in Kreuzberg (starting at Görlitzer Park).

If you have any more specific request, just let me know...

Absolutely fantastic information there pub, I greatly appreciate the effort you went to. I'm going to take a look at these over the next couple of days, I already fancy a few of your suggestions. Cheers 👍

I have the old 40% Voordeeluren discount card still, so then it's not...that....bad. But yeah i the summer I actually bike from Hoorn to Amsterdam rather than take a train. It's only about 40 km.

Yeah, but if you have to travel during peak hours, you're fucked!
