Popular Post crumbs 14,313
Just finished, was a phenomenal listen. Mike is incredibly knowledgeable with film history and trivia, it's amazing how effortlessly he draws upon connections to all these various texts. Nice to spend a couple of hours geeking out, even beyond music. Agree with his preference for Indy 5 to embrace Indy's age and focus on the detective aspect instead of forcing Indy into unrealistic action situations. Some of the best stuff in the original trilogy is Indy traveling the world, exploring exotic places and solving clues -- just focus on that! Not everything needs to be a bare-knuckle fistfight. Interesting tidbit about JW recently pulling out a leather bound score for Mike so he could source some original cue titles (that must have missing from the tape reels and whatever paperwork the studio had). Wonder what this score is? Hopefully we find out in a later podcast. Kudos to the interviewers also, clearly knowledgeable and prepared with their questions. Sidenote -- I haven't heard those TLC cues towards the end of the interview in such good quality (around 1:56 for the alternate 9M2). Clearly from a boot but certainly better sounding than anything I've previously heard. crumbs 14,313
Hah! Wishful thinking... somehow I don't think a single cue title is missing or unknown from Hook though Maybe one of his earlier scores where paperwork is more scarce. I have no real idea how common/uncommon it is for a JW score to have unknown cue titles after all these years (probably very common). Mike was incredibly generous with his time and stories, and he was kind enough to listen to my first edit pass to ensure we had everything as he liked it. As you can expect, he gave good notes to ensure the most intelligibility and clarity. (Nothing was lost in some big cut! There is not some story he gave us that I had to remove. And we never asked him what soundtracks were coming out soon since he would not have been able to tell us anyway.) I thought about actually releasing the interview in two parts, but I did not feel there was an obvious break to do so. Everything just flowed from one topic to another. It was a fantastic way to spend a Saturday! I am glad the reaction is positive! And thank you for the kind words about Ron and me as interviewers. Happily, we mostly just asked a few decent questions and let Mike take it from there. The source of the TLC tracks is from something I found at a fan show (it might actually have been the big annual Star Trek show that used to be in Pasadena - maybe this was 2000 or thereabouts). The title is "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade Complete Film Collection." This is noisy but not bad overall. I left the noise in both due to time and just not wanting to fuss with it. I also have the "vol 2" bootleg as well that is pretty hard to listen to. I think that is the one which originated from the Spain tracks? Not sure where this "Complete" one is sourced from. Popular Post Jay 37,355
OK listened to the next 40 minutes or so on my way home tonight. I loved the stories told about liking film music and how other people in your life feel about it, and how the general public just doesn't get it! And I loved the stories about Jerry Goldsmith, like how MM edited down the two Cloud / Flyover cues for the DE of Star Trek TPM and played them for Jerry and he approved, and how they recut the footage to the shortened cues instead of the other way around, and how MM had to explain to concert programmers that having Jerry attend a Hollywood Bowl concert where they played music from Freud synced to the shaft sequence from Alien just because that's what happened in the film could be turned into an educational moment of explaining to the audience that that happened, but then playing the cue Jerry actually wrote for the scene. So cool - it must have been pretty awesome for Jerry to experience that! In fact the discussion about his role about Live to Projection concerts was really cool, talking about how he lobbied to have music restored in Jaws and CE3K and Superman. I think he revealed in this podcast that unused music will be restored for the Superman concerts! (or was that already known and I forgot?) Every fan of John Williams should really listen to Mike's story about Superbowl Sunday 2017, and getting to listen to every take of every cue from Close Encounters and all the dialogue captured in between takes... including a 20 minute long continuous take of the choir experimenting with different sounds and moods and tones with audio from Williams at the podium and Spielberg in the booth... fascinating stuff. Jay 37,355
Listened to the next 40 minutes on my way into work this morning. This was mostly the Indiana Jones movie talk. Mike's take on the franchise as a whole, including Young Indy and Indy 4's place in it, was pretty interesting! Between the posts here last week and now this, I am really feeling like checking out the Young Indy series again for the first time since I was a kid. I'll have to see if I can track down the original versions. I like hearing MM talk about how JW is healthy and still writing music every day, even if he "crumples it up and throws it in the waste basket". The talk about how the music lives on in live performances even when the films don't set the world on fire was nice too As I was pulling into work, they were wrapping things up, but when I got out of the car, my phone said there's still 40 minutes left to go! Bellosh 3,418
@lairdo Fantastic interview and episode. Thanks for all you do in the Indy and John Williams world. My only gripe is that it wasn't 5 hours long. It was amazing but not totally surprising to hear Mike's love for Young Indy. He knew his stuff, especially when he talked about 'Journey of Radiance.' One of the best Corey Carrier episodes and also one of the best 'messages' the show ever told. Alas, once the acquisition happened, momentum dried up. I am hopeful that Lucasfilm/Disney will move forward in line with Indy 5 and get these out. Beyond the 4 official releases, there are a few more score pieces floating around - but there is so much more. I cannot believe I did not keep a copy of everything when I was working on this stuff. It was pretty funny to get Mike's goodbye, their whole wrap and introduction of what score cues would be played, only to go right back into the unreleased Anything Goes fanfare and re-introduce Mike again! It was smart to do a quick add-on to talk to Mike about Indy 5 and add it on like this. I liked hearing Mike talk about how humble JW is, and how he would never assume he is doing any project until he is asked... and also about how agreeing to do this knowing he'll be 90 when the writing and recording finishes is a good indicator of his health (and mental health I guess). Also had some good observations about how quickly the project has been moving along since changing from Spielberg to Mangold, compared to how long it languished when Spielberg was attached Oh yea, and Mike's (first) outro music was 6M2X New Ending from Last Crusade, again sounding better than I'd heard before. Overall, just a great 2 1/2 hour podcast. It's been a bit since we've gotten the latest Matessino JW expansion, so it's nice to get to hear him talk about his work in a great conversation while we wait for the next one. We knew we wanted to bring in Mike's thoughts on Indy 5, and we discussed how best to fit that in. Our initial thinking was to record the piece and then drop it into the original interview. But after I had gone through the material, there was not a clean, natural way to do this and keep the integrity of the discussion. Then we debated where to put the coda, and Mike and Ron both agreed to do what we did vs putting it after all of the music because we know not everyone listens to that far. (I was actually going to play all 11 minutes of the Young Indy music from Cairo all the way through the Pyramids which would have added 5 more mins.) In the end, we went for the podcast scherzo which I think worked out. After over 10 years of podcasting this interview stands out to me as the best. We've had Anne Sophie-Mutter, Keith Lockhart, Gloria Cheng, Tom Hooton and a few others. But this was the most conversational of them all thanks to Mike's openness and deep thinking. Also, as Falco said, we always play those two cues from ToD for our "Club Obi Wan" segments. The difference is that when they are the main show, they are from the film's track and include the club noises. When I put them in the JW Specials, despite the crowd noise makes sense for the fiction of the club, I just use the unreleased material as I like it better! We'll definitely try to get Mike back on in a few months. Yavar Moradi, Jay, Brando and 5 others

Popular Post crumbs 14,313
Unfortunately physical media is slowly being phased out by the major studios and labels. I sometimes wonder if physical Star Wars box sets have missed the boat, given the current landscape (and who knows if they'd even pay for reuse fees on the sequels, given the costs involved). I mean, they proved they can put the effort into physical media when they want to, like that beautiful 40th Anniversary vinyl set for SW (even hiring Jeff Bond to write an essay): But even that was 4 years ago and they didn't bother releasing a companion set for ESB's 40th. At least their Legacy Collection exists on physical media, even though the last release was 3 years ago. These look great and clearly had thought put into them. Why did they take the 1997 expansions of the original Star Wars scores off the market and are only selling the OST albums? Who knows. Why are they only selling the Concord programs of the original Indiana Jones scores and not their OST albums? Who knows. Why did Star Wars get a lavish 40th anniversary LP set and Empire didn't? Who knows. Why did Infinity War, Endgame, and Far From Home get CD releases but Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Ant-man the Wasp only got digital (with Mondo vinyl)? Who knows. Popular Post Jay 37,355
The specialty labels are (for the most part) open and honest, directly interact with their customers to find out what we want and/or to explain to us why they did things some certain way, and sometimes even directly ask for feedback about what to include on some pending album (usually for long running TV series) These major labels just follow the dollar, and are run by managers trying to climb the corporate ladder instead of actual fans of film music like all the special labels. Plus, as they go up the ladder and some other guy takes over, everything can change so patterns go away. The specialty label are more consistent (yet at still at the whims of all these corporate changes since their companies own the material they want to sell us) Yavar Moradi, Brando and That_Bloke

Dr. Rick 1,157
Calling it click bait is a bit harsh IMO. Good grief it’s an Indiana Jones website, not a JW fan site. I’m sure some of their listeners aren’t aware of any upcoming JW releases before listening to their podcasts. Bellosh and crumbs

Looks like whoever wrote that removed the comment so thanks to them too. (It's probably not clear that the links in our show notes do NOT give us any revenue or anything like that if there was some concern about that. We don't derive any money from anything at the IndyCast. All just for the fun and love of Indy and related stuff.) And as you guessed, indeed, we hear from our listeners that our podcast does indeed flag them about music they do not know is coming.
