Docteur Qui 1,544
Ok I know this has probably been answered multiple times in this thread, but how many eps do I need to give this show til it clicks? I watched the first ep a couple of years ago and didn't love it, but I've heard some great things since then. Cerebral Cortex 3,357
You could honestly start with season 2 and if that jives with you more than go back to season 1. IMO I think season 2 overall is a more solid execution of what I think it is they're trying to go for with the show. The first couple episodes of season 1 almost seem like they were forced to be somewhat comedic and then the show quickly mellows out tonally. It feels like MacFarlane pitched the show as a comedy so that it could get made when in reality he just wanted to make something in the spirit of TNG so the first couple episodes almost act as an appeasement. I would definitely give it until about halfway through the first season or so. As @Cerebral Cortex says, it starts off trying to be closer to an out and out comedy rather than a generally dramatic show with comedic elements which work much better when they are natural parts of the show than forced for the sake of a joke. I mean, let's face it, most of the 90s Trek shows took 3 seasons of 24 episodes each to get going, so half a dozen episodes to get into its stride is pretty good! The second season is definitely more solid. Yavar Moradi, Docteur Qui and Cerebral Cortex 2

karelm 2,913
Looks great! The story lines are quite good and score/sfx are fantastic! Interestingly, the show has already surpassed Battlestar Galactica (1978 series) which had 24 episodes total (first 3 were the 3-hour premiere movie) and 12 episodes as part of the ill-conceived Galactica 1980, yet that show garnered a cult following and was popular with fans to be reborn decades later. I hope season 3 of orville dives deeper into the characters and stories it established. Like you, Jay, I way prefer Alara to Keyali. Popular Post Jay 37,363
Oh man, Seth Macfarlane ripped in to Fox (the tv network) at the premiere Quote “I want to say, it is an absolute thrill to not be on the Fox network. We never really belonged there. And they’ve curated a specific brand now. Between Beat Shazam, Name That Tune and Don’t Forget the Lyrics!, Fox has really captured the demo of people who have no idea what song they’re listening to.” “When I look at Fox’s ratings, I gotta hand it to them: It takes a special talent to pander to the lowest common denominator without actually getting them as an audience. That takes talent! But hey, we’re here on Hulu, thank God.” “Hulu is literally on top of the streaming game, Kardashians aside. Just knowing our show is now available, and the public can enjoy watching $50 million worth of special effects on their phone while they defecate, really gives me goosebumps.” https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/seth-macfarlane-orville-new-horizons-premiere-1235154234/ Raiders of the SoundtrArk, leeallen01, Manakin Skywalker and 2 others

Popular Post DarthDementous 1,059
Wow, that really fired on all cylinders for me. Was not expecting to come away from The Orville thinking I had seen some of the most high quality sci-fi visuals in TV The budget must’ve expanded significantly and they were unabashedly just flexing, but in a way that enhanced the scenes and remained coherent - which if New Trek is anything to go by, is pretty rare. I think this kind of puts the final nail in the coffin of New Trek doing absolutely nothing better than The Orville I think they managed to make the show more visually interesting without sacrificing the more retro aesthetic which is very impressive leeallen01, Tom Guernsey, Yavar Moradi and 1 other

They better not just have it exclusive to the bloody streaming service crap like so much else. That's a sci-fi feature film style score! The instrumentation is massive for TV with winds in 3 (12 winds), 6 horns 3 trumpets 4 trombones, tuba, timpani, 3 percussionists, harp, piano, 26 violins, 10 viola, 8 cello, 6 double bass so 82 musicians total recorded at 20th Century Fox, Neuman Scoring Stage. Those stats are on par with the scores of E.T., Jurassic Park, Star Wars (except that usually includes additional percussion and choir), but major blockbuster scores. Just amazing how polished some streaming/tv shows have become. DarthDementous
Pellaeon 593
The second episode was okay. I am not a big horror fan, but at least it was Sci-fi horror. I liked that it wasn't a character-driven episode, though of course there were character bits. But it was cool seeing so much of the main cast basically just doing their jobs. It was neat to see a bit of the old (the Krill—always a delight) and something new. Space exploration is always great. The score definitely stood out, especially something based on “The Cloud” from Star Trek TMP. The main drawbacks of this episode for me are that they are still flexing their budget so much as to be distracting, and the acting. I don’t know what it was about this episode, but most of the cast and especially Kelly and Claire were particularly stilted in their delivery in this episode. Also, there is still a distinct lack of humor. I hope that’s just due to the nature of this (and the previous) episode, and not the new overall direction. leeallen01

leeallen01 2,136
Enjoyed the 2nd episode overall, but had a few bad issues with it like their lack of caution when entering an alien hive. No suits until after they learned of the danger. And how they saw the admiral morphing into a creature and didn't think to quarantine him in case of exposure of a deadly virus... and no security in sick bay... Also it was convenient that the admiral was the one infected, so he could shut the power off and lock everyone out with his top level codes. And where the hell did the entire crew go when the power went out? Haha they just disappeared. Only the main cast were left for some reason. And I guess this was another classic scifi show cliche when probably 50 crew are dead and they just forget about it and move on. No funeral or anything. I did love the designs though. Nice creepy (the Fly) type creatures. I enjoyed the premise of a completely dark area of space that not even the Krill dare to go. Nice creepy ideas. Just the execution was not the best. enderdrag64 and Pellaeon
Popular Post Tom Guernsey 2,284
Finally got round to watching the first episode of the new series. Generally great, although if it's a semi-soft (oo-er... sorry) reboot, I'm not sure the tone and themes in it would be that appealing to a new viewer, interesting though they were. It would be a bit like having had the TNG episode Family as the first episode in the new series rather than the second half of The Best of Both Worlds (and Family was less of a downer than this episode of the Orville). The music by Kevin Kaska was superb, especially the sequence with the new fighter ship which turned the Adventures of Mutt into space cowboy rodeo music. The action writing elsewhere was dynamic and exciting, mixed upfront but the more sombre moments scored sensitively. Think I'll take a bit of time getting used to the new version of the main titles music, but nice to have something new to enjoy. Does anyone know if Bruce Broughton did the new version or if it was by one of the series composers? Looking forward to the soundtrack to this series immensely. I'm not at all sold on shows that have put out an album for every episode (I'm looking at you, Mandalorian season 1...) or absolutely hours of music (Star Trek: Prodigy... good though it is) but if the quality is maintained throughout this season, they could almost justify an album per episode, especially since each episode has a generous run time and will therefore likely have a decent amount of music, else I think the 2 disc highlights per season to date haven't missed anything crucial (I think!).
