There are several scores on that list that don't belong anywhere near a top 100 list.

Just watched the Dunkirk clip - wow, what a wildly inappropriate musical tone. I appreciate that it may be within a larger energy-building part of the film, but could Zimmer not at least try to pretend we're in the '40s?

having temporally contrasting music is more common than you think

Do orchestral scores for any movie set before the advent of the orchestra bother you?

Not at all. But a positive opinion that mentions the score! This board needs something that counters the endless cynicism and negativity.

Yes, like this...

Fuck you all. How about waiting a couple of more weeks untill you've seen the movie?

(I'm drunk at my summer house, in case you need justification for the colourful language).

Yes! Militaristic positivity is what is required -- drunk or sober! :D

You make more sense when you're drunk so from now on, please only post when you've bad a few too many.

Saw film tongiht.

Zimmer's score is so different - think Interstellar's Imperfect Lock but a whole score like that  (can't imagine what it'll be like on the album as it very much works best in context, like Johannsson's Arrival score but not as bad thinking about outside context) but absolutely excellent.

Is the score orchestral or more like that Supermarine track? Should we expect the unexpected?

Well, Tina Guo did like 32 hours of cello for this movie. And Satnam Ramgotra did additional music. So there has to be some drums in there as well. I don't think there is a whole orchestra though.

no full orchestra, yes. but orchestral instruments experimenting with the ticking/rising motif.

the thing is - there's no real theme/melody until the end credits roll. again - in context it's fantastic, out of context though, you be the judge

Okay, here goes my mental breakdown, if you'll all just indulge me for a second.

I like Nolan's films. I'm yet to see a film of his that I didn't enjoy. The Prestige is his best in my opinion. Also I like Zimmer. I enjoy many of his scores.

So I like both of them and their work together also. So how come I can't shake this constant impression of utter smug pretentiousness? Both guys seem humble enough and great at what they do, but every time they do a new film, in the whole lead up to it, I find myself not interested at all in it, because it feels like a pretentious attempt at gathering awards and praise along the lines of "They are artists ahead of their time," or some cringe-worthy crap. Yet when I see a new film of theirs, I always enjoy it.

In summary, I like both Nolan and Zimmer, I like all their collaborations, yet I cannot shake my mental image of them smelling each others farts whilst looking at the Mona Lisa.

I need mental help.

"the movie didnt deserve better" is a rubbish excuse! Imagine if Goldsmith had lived by that credo?

fair enough

but I dont know if the score is all Zimmers fault or someone else just asking for a less orchestral approach

It's rated PG13 so they are only allowed one instance.

Indeed.

Not because it's a war movie, and there are people dying, but because the word "fuck" is uttered twice!

Well fuck that for a game of soldiers!

When I was 10, I had already watched movies far more intense than Dunkirk!

Parents these days are fucking overprotective!

My neighbor won't let their 15 year old son watch R rated movies!
