gkgyver 1,645
Does someone else find it kind of disrespectful to Powell the way this went? Going like: so, Mr. Powell, I'm so glad you agreed to score this film of mine. Now, meet your overlord John Williams. "Now, John, I know you are talented, but we both know you don't *really* know what to do here, so let me spot the film for you and write you some suites. And we'll record them with the orchestra, so that you, you know, really get it!"
Popular Post mrbellamy 6,281
Powell kept saying they were pretty upfront that Williams would be in on it and that was a big reason he took the job. And he said at one point JW was being typical JW during the recording saying shit like “This is ridiculous, you can write your own themes.” Who knows how this actually came about. Seems like they got along and that it was a lark to Powell to get those cues. He said it made things easy. I feel like no matter how pro you are, if you’re the kind of person who would be excited or intimidated by scoring a Star Wars movie, then getting a sample of Williams’s take to start with would probably just be fun. crumbs, The Illustrious Jerry, Cerebral Cortex and 1 other
Popular Post publicist 4,643
Also i have to say that one Williams device, the questing, fast motif starting at ca. 00:38 in the Han tune, is Powell's best building block. It enhances so many good moments in 'Solo', he should be thankful for that. Nick Parker, The Illustrious Jerry, crumbs and 2 others

Popular Post Luka 242
I just wanted to say that the first couple of times I listened to the score to Solo, I really didn't like it. I wasn't accustomed to the style of John Powell, never really listened to his music beforehand. But since it came out, it actually is now one of the Star Wars scores I enjoy listening to the most! I absolutely LOVE the frenetic energy of it! With all the percussions and sharp brass and fast tempos. Can't wait to watch How to Train Your Dragon, as it will give me more Powell music to listen to! I've been wondering that myself. I'm inclined to think it's almost all Powell, and perhaps Sener just helped a little with arrangements. Because in this Facebook post of sheet music Powell strongly implies that it's his cue, not someone else's: I feel like it'd be somewhat dishonest to so strongly imply it's his cue, if, in fact, it was mostly written by someone else. So I'm willing to assume Powell essentially wrote this cue himself, and the "additional music" credit or whatever it was for Sener was merely a generous tip of the hat for some arranging or orchestrating.
