  1. 1. What are you most looking forward to/hoping for about TLJ's score?

    • Visceral, streamlined action writing (along the lines of "No Man's Land" and "I Can Fly Anything")
    • Complex, "crazy" action writing (like "The Falcon")
    • New variations of "Rey's Theme"
    • More uses of "The Jedi Steps" theme
    • A new major theme for the First Order
    • The Ahch-To material (possibly mystical or religioso)
    • EPIC CHOIR!!!!!
    • The source music for the casino
    • Emotional writing in the third act
    • Other (please specify!)
    • New variations of themes from the OT
    • A new love theme

Second place for me, right behind action music, would probably be emotional stuff for the third act. Williams absolutely nailed TFA's final scenes, composing one of his most beautiful pieces of all time ("Farewell and the Trip").

Yep. TFA was a very pleasant surprise to me and I would love to experience that again (still my favorite post-2005 Williams score, tied with Lincoln). But more specifically, I am very interested in Ahch-To and what he's done in that regard.

Other!

OK, I fixed it. Unfortunately, now "Other" isn't the last option in the poll anymore, but that doesn't really matter.

I know nothing about the third act or it's supposed "emotional writing"

Yeah I'm just being speculative, based on the little tidbits of plot we've heard about, as well as the natural tendency of, really, every SW score to have some really beautiful, operatic stuff.  We really don't know that much about how the third act goes down, other than its setting.

Indeed, I would love if Williams went back to War Horse mode. Maybe a "Plowing"-like cue for the culmination of her training? :)

I forgot you have this weird thing with “The Ways of the Force” not being emotional enough.  I still disagree!

Yeah haha. But "Farewell and the Trip" more than makes up for it!!

The more War Horse the better I say, particularly in the areas of drama and action scoring.

That the new Jedi theme isn't abandoned and is instead greatly expanded on. I would like Imperial March levels of permutations of it.

After that, far improved set-piece cues.  Overall I consider TFA to be just an okay SW score due to the lack of big musical marquees I expect from the franchise. I would also prefer to enjoy these within the film, and not on an unsatisfying CD release.

The Prequels had a shortage of this also. Don't expect much. Williams doesn't really do set-pieces anymore.

I hope we get a suave jazz theme theme for the

or perhaps a stomping timpani cue.

I wasn't under the impression that we would get that scene in the film, but rather

Spoiler

a horseback chase (an action scene).

But we'll see! There's still a lot we don't know.

Complex, "crazy" action writing all the way, but what I really want is some alien-sounding textures, along the lines of the music for the attack of the Sand People, or the very beginning of TESB's "Crash Landing". TFA was lacking in stuff like that IMO.

I want thrilling new renditions of Rey's Theme and The Jedi Steps

I want brand new themes as good as the other great themes the series has given us

And a lengthy finale cue and end credits medley that wraps everything up and leaves me wanting more

The finale could be interesting. Didn't Johnson say he didn't want to create an "episodic" film, but have a sense of closure to his movie? Surely, the music choice will be informed by that.

As for this and for the "EPIC CHOIR!!!!!" option, we know that its the same orchestral set-up (85-piece) but there's been no word on the involvement of the Hollywood Film Chorale. If it were anything major (besides the 24-piece basso profundo choir) I suppose word will have gone out, and it hasn't.

There are two people (a man and a woman) listed as "singer: ensemble" in the music department of the film's IMDB page.

Ugh. I forgot about that.

Yeah, one of my favorite moments was hearing that awesome rendition of Rey’s theme blasting out over the IMAX sound system for the first time.  That powerful counterpoint in the horns, wow.  And of course they had to f*** it up.

My biggest hope score-wise would be new strong themes that fit into the universe as seamlessly as Rey's theme did.

My biggest hope music-wise is that people would leave preconceptions at the door and enjoy the music as it is, and not compare it unfavorably to some abstract, virtually unobtainable standard in their minds.
