5. Sophisticated Lady

Digital Jukebox

1. Never On Sunday

Hmm. I'm pretty new to soundtrack collecting, and only have the new Spielberg-Williams Collab set and the Decca 2-disc BPO space collection from Johnny. I also like jazz. This might be just the box for me if the price is semi-friendly or will drop on a sale soon!

If you’re new to discovering the magic that is John Williams, you’re in for a treat. Just start putting aside money for the box right now, you’ll be doing yourself a favor.

This box packs a punch when it comes to a top-of-the-crop selection of movie themes and jazz standards alike.

Well, there should be a boxset for the Philips era too.... it would be what... 19 to 22 CD..., it depends if they want to put the "By Request" album integrally and the two albums made with Jessye Norman....

That's from the Philips era of Williams and the BPO.  They switched to Sony Classical in 1990.

I stand corrected. Was thinking Sony reissued it.

JW recorded a album on Philps with Jessye Norman in 1992. But not with the Boston Pops, of course. He plays the piano on that album. The last album with the BPO on Philips is "Pops by George" (aka Pops by Gershwin) (1990).

Yes! I own around 20 JW&BPO CDs issued by Philips, but I still don't own them all. There always seem to be one or two left... It's funny.

Norman's "Lucky to Be Me" was recorded in New York in two different occasions in 1987 and 1989. The CD was released in 1991, after Williams had already signed the new contract with Sony in late 1989.

Discogs says 1992.

I just realized the suggested price on the website is 599,99 DKK, which is about 95 $ US.

Not bad.

I Think I will buy it, just to have a big box with "John Williams" written in big on it. :D

In all this years I never noticed that there was another date in there... My mind read the 1991 date and disregarded the other... Thanks for the correction :)

As much as I would love to have a huge box with Williams name on it, I don't think I'll spent all that money unless there is any unreleased stuff.

For the moment, if we assume this content, yes.

1 Music of the Night (BPO)
2 Star Wars Trilogy (Skywalker Symphony)
3 The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration (BPO)
4 I Love a Parade (BPO)
5 The Green Album (BPO)
6 Joy to the World (BPO)
7 Night and Day (BPO)
8 Unforgettable (BPO)
9 Music for Stage and Screen (BPO)
10 It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing (BPO)
11 Williams on Williams (BPO)
12 Summon the Heroes (BPO)
13 Cinema Serenade (Itzhak Perlman, Pittsburgh SO)
14 The Five Sacred Trees album (London SO)
15 The Hollywood Sound (London SO)
16 Gershwin Fantasy (Joshua Bell, London SO)
17 Cinema Serenade 2 (Itzhak Perlman, BPO)

18 Yo-Yo Ma Plays The Music Of John Williams (LA orchestra)
19 American Journey (Utah SO/ LA orchestra)
20 The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration Part III (LA orchestra)

A little bonus, like the 2006 "Memoirs of a Geisha - Live Sessions" EP would be welcome... we don't know... it has never been released on an "album" yet.

As the Oboe Concerto released digitally in 2013 on another EP, I'm not sure that Sony Classical is the right holder.  It was a iTunes digital release and I think that's a Boston Symphony Orchestra Inc. production.

Anyway, it would be welcome too as a bonus in the boxset!

The Oboe Concerto was released digitally by BSO Classics, available on iTunes, but also in lossless format through the BSO store. My hope is that they release both the Oboe and Harp concertos on CD someday -- and maybe the Viola Concerto, in case that was recorded at the time of the premiere.

I wonder now if Decca will do the same with the "Philips" years... It would be a boxset of what, 21-22 CD (depending of what they do with the new recordings featured on the By Request compilation)?

I'd buy that!

And I'm thinking of buying this Sony boxset too, even though I already own 80% of its contents!

I have 100 % and I'll probably buy it, even if it's not remastered.

It's a Collector's Item, nice to have on your John Williams shelf!

So Sony is going through the effort of collecting the 20 albums they've already released of his work in one box, yet not finding a way to include the Memoirs suites or Happy Birthday Variations?  Bah!

Could have done with a 21th CD which had some unreleased works on it.

Seriously!  Both Memoirs suites, Happy Birthday Variations, surely there's some other odds and ends he recorded during his time signed to Sony that haven't been released.  Like that Close Encounters suite recorded last year!

It doesn't say that it's not a Complete Boxset. Just the top 20, if you will.
