I don't think they've withheld many other deleted scenes between the two releases.

Rian also says the rough cut was over 3 hours and there were "whole sequences" taken out, so the Williams deleted music should be pretty substantial! Not just an endless series of trimmed shots with microedits.

So if the rough cut JW saw was over 3 hours, in theory he might have written almost as much music for TLJ as he did for TFA (173 minutes)! That's nuts.

That's no certainty, though. We don't know how much footage is unscored in the final cut and in those deleted scenes. Maybe Johnson wanted the film sparsely scored.

Well, yes, I did say in theory.

 

But even if the final film has about 30 minutes without music (which would be unusually silent for a Star Wars film), that's still about 120 minutes of score + 10-15 minutes of music for deleted scenes. That's only about half an hour less than TFA.

 

Has anyone worked out which film has the least score in the final cut? Surely it has to be Empire or SW.

Is it common for axed scenes to be scored though? I just imagine it to have a negative impact on the effectiveness of the musical storytelling, its structural sweep and the thematic arcs. Is this something to be concerned about again? I feel like John's TFA score was hacked up a bit to the point that his contribution was not what he envisaged and delivered to the film at an earlier stage of its production.

It all depends, really.  If a composer starts late in the process, most of what's gonna be deleted is already deleted, and he scores a cut close to the final cut.

Sometimes a composer begins working early, and composes and even records music for scenes that later get cut.  Sometimes this music even makes it onto OST albums.  Fellowship of the Ring is one example (the Gollum music is from a cue composed for a longer cut of the scene than the final theatrical cut of the scene).  The Empire Strikes Back features the music for Luke in the bacta tank that was cut from the final film.  For Return of the Jedi he scored that scene of Luke finishing his new lightsaber that got cut.

It's possible Williams was able to compose revised cues to cover the newer edit, I mean didn't 1941 have some cues like that?

Williams probably just wrote and recorded cues for scenes in late 2016 (there were December recording sessions) that ended up being deleted in the 8 months that followed. 

 

It sounds like the half hour of deleted scenes are mostly meaty, whole sequences, rather than a few deleted shots here & there or frame trims to shots being retained (which was the case with TFA, where JJ just kept tinkering with the length of shots until the cues wouldn't fit without microedits).

 

Rian strikes me as a more thorough and confident editor, where he'll refine the assembly of each scene until it's working, then move on to the next. Whereas JJ's edits just seem to be in a constant state of flux and refinement, working on a handful of scenes at the same time with multiple editors.

Don't we have around here somewhere a number as to how many minutes of music were recorded? that should at least give us a hint. I doubt it was those 20 minutes in their entirety. There are always going to be things that will end up on the cutting room floor way before you let the composer see the film.

 

There's always going to be stuff that looks compelling on the page, and only becomes clearly redundant when you see it on-screen.

It was 183 minutes recorded, in total (according to the Variety interview).

 

About 130 minutes are in the final cut (guesstimate). Let's say another 15 minutes scored deleted scenes (there's only 20 minutes' worth on this Blu-ray but there are other deleted scenes not included). 

 

So that leaves about 35-40 minutes of alternates and early versions of cues we're yet to hear. I'm guessing the bonus features will include lots of new music, just as TFA did.

Paige's Gun Jams, Caretakers Party, and the Extended Fathiers Chase definitely have new music, the rest seems tracked, with some bits that were cut from those cues in the films

Do they have timecodes in picture like TFA? Are they in film quality or rough shape? Finished FX (I know Phasma scene is unfinished)?

Even that has some very minor unfinished bluescreen removal in some shots around Luke's hair, but I only noticed that because I was actively looking for how finished it was  Other than that, it could slip right into the movie with no problems.

I haven't seen the extended Fathiers scene yet, but if that's the case it reminds me a lot of Episode I's extended Pod Race scene (except Lucas actually put that sucker back in the movie!)

They were advertised in the promo, definitely on the bluray, I don't know if they're on Movies Anywhere. I'm not sure of the source of the rip I've seen. No idea why that Youtue video doesn't have them. 

 

The Sneaking scene has temp from AotC.

The Fathiers has at least 3 minutes of new unreleased music including some really nice textures and a sweet Rose variation, and not least by far, extends those first 30 seconds we oh so love! The nature of the scene is way too stop-and start, we see seconds of Bight life with no music, then rampage again, it's staggered, but could be edited to flow well if we had it all. The roof ride and the bathhouse is my favourite part musically, the bathhouse could almost be counted as additional source music! Too bad the scene's so stupid.
