Fans liked the first film, so you give them a second one which is a bit different. The third film has usually some signs of fatigue and a lack of ideas. There are many examples of films that work well as duos. The Godfather + The Godfather Part II Jurassic Park + The Lost World Gremlins + Gremlins 2 Home Alone + Home Alone 2 Terminator + Terminator 2 28 Days Later + 28 Weeks Later Kill Bill Vol. 1 + Kill Bill Vol. 2 Trainspotting + T2 Trainspotting Blade Runner + Blade Runner 2049 Batman + Batman Returns None of these examples would have/has taken benefit from a third film. I actually think most of those films don't work as duos, and should have stopped with one. In fact I'd say the Godfather, Terminator, Batman and Kill Bill (which is really one movie) are the only good examples of a second film complementing and even completing the story begun in the first. And Batman is borderline (admitted I haven't seen 28 days or its follow up, nor Trainspotting 2). You could add Alien/Aliens to this list. Though while Aliens is an excellent movie, it didn't demand a sequel the way say Godfather or Terminator did. In any event, anything after the second movie is wholly unnecessary (sorry Thor). TLW, Gremlins 2 and Home Alone 2 are completely unnecessary, and inferior, sequels.
Brundlefly 2,393
The alien franchise is a tetralogy! 5 hours ago, Nick1066 said: TLW, Gremlins 2 and Home Alone 2 are completely unnecessary, and inferior, sequels. Inferior? - Hell yes! Completely unnecessary? - No, because it's so refreshingly different and sets and end to the thematic, but it could have been more ambitious (for the first example), and not completely, because it was fun to see them make fun of and exaggerate the topics of the first films (for the two following examples). Wojo 2,456
Home Alone 2 is more like a remake than a sequel.

Naïve Old Fart 10,297
Not even the sexy (in a milf kind of way) Bonnie Bedelia, and the always-classy Franco Nero could save DH2. I'm really surprised to see Stuart Baird's name on this; it doesn't feel like a SB-edited film.

Ollie 1,108
Die Hard 2 is one of the best sequels ever made. Die Hard III is a poor film with some solid action sequences, although the ending is kinda weak.

The Train Station 8,558
I never got the hype for III. I mean it's alright, but the abrupt ending always kinda killed it for me.
