crlbrg 381
I can confirm. I emailed the Musikverein to ask about the possibility of any rehearsals open to the public, but a rep said that this would not be possible due to recordings going on. However, he could not confirm if there would be a CD release. Makes the cancellation of the Vienna concert all the more heart-breaking. 😢

tannhauser 101
This chap on Classic FM is irritating me. Popular Post voltisubito 42
Wonderful concert full of highlights: Loved how menacing the low horn statement was at the beginning of Close Encounters, Katy Woolley (principal horn) was consistently brilliant, as was Juliana Koch's oboe solo in Dracula. A real shame then that, as predicted, Classic FM's compressor completely obliterated the dynamic range of the performance heard in the hall and scuppered any attempts that were made to mix the audio. The station has much to learn from how BBC Radio 3 broadcasts live music. 19 hours ago, Omen II said: Does anyone know who the bass clarinet player was? I could not see him properly (the harp was in the way) but it was definitely not Katy Ayling as listed in the programme. I wondered if it might have been one of the clarinet players from the LPO or the Philharmonia. Laurent Ben Slimane (Philharmonia) I believe. Not sure who Oboe 2 was (she wasn't Rosie Jenkins as listed in the programme), and Rebecca Gilliver was principal cello on the night. So rescheduling Vienna would probably have priority (it also seems to be a bucket list item for Williams). I am afraid that his doctors will forbid him to fly to Europe again, but this post sure gives some hope. What makes you think Vienna was the main anchor point, since London was announced first? No one involved was trying to make this harder than it needed to be, I would imagine it was the complete reverse. Asking about why didn't they do this or why didn't they do that is pointless - even if it looks obvious to you that it should've been done a certain way - this is not their first rodeo, and there are probably a million variables/complications involved that we don't know about. End of the day, the guy gave it a shot based on best endeavours and due to factors out of their control it didn't work out. It can happen with any gig or tour....... That's exactly how it is. I totally understand the disappointment and frustration about this unfortunate turn of events, especially being this close to the concert. It's really an unexpected situation. I can only imagine how sorry Williams himself is about all this. He was very excited to come back in London and also to conduct the Wiener Philharmoniker in Vienna. In the end, it turned out as a moving and heartfelt celebration and it'll be a treasured memory for everyone who attended. As for the question "Why didn't he do a concert in Europe in previous years when he was younger/fitter etc.", you have to take a gazillion of factors into count. It's a known fact the LSO was trying to have him conduct a concert in London since, well, at least 1999. JW kept a pretty busy schedule over these two decades, so it's not easy to align schedules with one of the busiest orchestras in the world. Of course he came to London several times to record film scores and album projects during this timespan. Sue Mallet (LSO manager) worked so hard to try every single time to see if there was a chance to set up a gig at Barbican while JW was in town for other projects. In 2005, they were VERY close, as JW and his team gave the availabilty to conduct a couple of concerts after the Ep3 sessions were finished, but the post'production schedule of Spielberg's War of the Worlds was moved up several weeks and he had to fly back to LA to start working on it. Also, Williams has issues in taking long flights because of back ailment, so it was something hard to set up and manage, these things are a lot harder than it seems. We also have to take into account that JW's management is very protective of him and doesn't want to hassle him with too many engagements that might compromise his health. The Vienna gig was something too alluring to say no to, and it's likely a big item on JW's bucket list. It's disappointing the events made this impossible to happen, but I sincerely hope that, if health permits, JW will want to give both London and Vienna another shot next year. 1 hour ago, jocores said: I read in a spanish forum from a reliable source than it was an issue of trouble with blood circulation regarded to being seated for too many hours in the flight from the States. There are only speculations around (others said it wasn't anything related to the flight), so I don't see the need to start assuming anything about how it should have been handled etc. The only certain thing is that, whatever the medical issue was, it was nothing severe, thank goodness, but it was something for which he needed care and rest.
